Matt Bellamy was born on the 9th June 1978 in Cambridge. When Matt was five they moved to Devon. Matt's father was the guitarist in 60's group, The Tornadoes, who were the first British band to get a number one in the US charts. Even though Matt lived in an extremely musical home he didn't learn his first instrument until he was ten, which was the piano. Matt's father was the guitarist in 60's group, The Tornadoes, who were the first British band to get a number one in the US charts. Even though Matt lived in an extremely musical home he didn't learn his first instrument until he was ten, which was the piano. At the age of thirteen, Matt's parents divorced and his father moved to Exeter. Matt, Chris and Dom were really good friends growing up and in their teens were bored by the sleepy life that Teignmoth and Devon provided. The band were originally in three separate bands but at the age of 13 they created a band by the name of Gothic Plague. This then changed to Fixed penalty and then Rocket Baby Dolls. In 1996 they entered a 'battle of the bands' style competition. All the other bands there were playing pop punk and jazz. They went up on the stage with make-up all over the faces, played loudly and violently then smashed everything on the stage. They were all about the attitude and this is why they won. They were all shocked because they were all terrible at their instruments and went out there to lose. This is when they realized music is a matter of emotion. A couple of weeks after the competition they changed their name to Muse.
Muse were all about playing their own songs and not covers. They were not getting many gigs because they would say no to anyone who wanted them to play covers. Their main influences at the time were American grunge bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden but also got influences from British indie and alternate rock bands like Radiohead. At the age of 18 Matt moved to Exeter where he lived with his friend above an adult bookshop. They both worked as painters and decorators but his friend was also a drug dealer. Bellamy once explained his flat saying "like a scene from Trainspotting, white powders and mirrors everywhere". His friend then ended up in prison. These days kept Matt away from those kinds of drugs because he saw what it did to people. These times in his life also greatly influenced their debut Showbiz. It all changed when one October night in 1995, Dennis Smith noticed them in a Cornish village. Although, it wasn't until 1997 that Dennis offered them free studio time. In 1998, Muse released a self-titled EP on the Dangerous label. Then on Christmas eve they were signed up to Madonna's label, Maverick. Muse then released another EP called Muscle Museum with the track Uno on it. They released Uno as a single and it just reached the top 75. Dennis Smith then co-founded Taste Media especially for Muse who they are still with to this day.
Muse then released the single Cave and followed it up with the LP Showbiz in October 1999. People were instantly comparing it to the work of Radiohead and saying that Muse were just Radiohead rip-offs. Muse then released Muscle Museum, Sunburn and Unintended as singles. After the release of the album Maverick booked Muse into supporting slots with both the Foo fighters and Red hot chili peppers in the United States. Muse also played at many large festivals in Europe, Japan and Australia. During this time they built up quite a considerate fanbase in Western Europe which didn't spread to their homeland of Britain.
Muse then went straight back into the studio to record the sequel to Showbiz which was named Origin Of Symmetry. This album was far more experimental and they explored their style far more. They had a far more heavier and darker sound and were far more bass influenced. They experimented with some strange instruments like Megalomania which was recorded in a church using an organ. Bellamy is at his best on this album with even higher pitched vocals and more technical yet catchy guitar and piano work. Bellamy's main guitar influences on this album were Jimi Hendrix and Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine). His main music writing influence was Freddie Mercury and Queen. This was the album which Muse felt would be the one to finally crack America. However, the irony is the fact that Muse never released this album in America and were made to change the album for American release. This insulted the band and they left Maverick. They released the songs Plug In Baby and New Born and then released the album. Muse then released Bliss and an A-side Feeling Good/Hyper Music. During 2002 Muse went on a huge world tour promoting the album and a CD and DVD called Hullabaloo. They then released another A-side called Dead Star/In Your World. They then went straight back into the studio to record their third studio album Absolution.
In 2003 Muse released Absolution. This album had a constant theme all the way through: the end of the world. They released a download-only song single called Stockholm Syndrome, then released Absolution. They then released Time Is Running Out, Hysteria, Sing For Absolution and Butterflies And Hurricanes. They received huge amounts of awards and praise for Absolution. Muse had finally hit mainstream critical acclaim in both Britain and America. Muse were at a high but during one of the best gigs of there life, tragedy struck. While playing at the Glastonbury festival of last year, Dominic Howard's dad passed away from a heart attack. The band came very close to splitting up, but Dom recovered and they finished their tour.
In July 2006, Muse released Black Holes and Revelations. « hide |
