Formed in1965 when Jim Morrison met up with former classmate Ray Manzarek on a beach in L.A.. They recruited Robby Kreiger to play guitar and John Densmore as their drummer. The band rehearsed in Robby's parents house and performed in bars and clubs all over the sunset strip until their first hit single "Light My Fire" blew through the charts topping at number 1. Each member of the Doors brought a different sound to the band. Jim with his poetry, Ray with his classical and jazz keyboard training, Robby with his bottle neck blues and spanish flamenco guitar playing and John with his jazz influenced drumming. They performed without a bassist using Ray's Fender Bass Keyoard to cover the job while they went with session bassists or the keyboard to cover the bass in the studio. The final result was a blues based psychedelic rock band that was eager to experiment. After 6 studio albums in 5 years Jim was tired of the scene and retreated to Paris France where on July 3 1971 he was announced dead from unknown causes. The Doors still continued for a few years after Jim's death but it just wasn't the same without there frontman. Krieger and Manzarek still tour today with Ian Astbury of the Cult on vocals and Stuart Copeland of the Police on drums under the name "The Riders of the Storm". « hide
