Katatonia is a Swedish band formed in Stockholm in 1991 by Jonas Renkse (formerly Lord Seth) and Anders Nystrom (formerly Blackheim). Their early work was a melodic death/doom metal combination and is highly regarded by metal fans abroad. During this time they were closely associated with the band Opeth; so much so that Mikael Akerfeldt performed vocals on their second album Brave Murder Day. After a brief hiatus in 1996-1997, the band reformed and began to gravitate away from extreme music and closer to the depressive, sorrowful rock they are today.
