Muddy Waters
Blues

McKinley Morganfield was born in 1915 in the deep south, and by the time he had picked up his first guitar, the Great Depression was in full swing. This, along with the stress of being African-American in a bigoted time, helped shape his playing and singing into a ferocious blend of power, pain, and terror. McKinley Morganfield was born in 1915 in the deep south, and by the time he had picked up his first guitar, the Great Depression was in full swing. This, along with the stress of being African-American in a bigoted time, helped shape his playing and singing into a ferocious blend of power, pain, and terror. He made a name for himself as Muddy Waters, playing clubs in and around Chicago and in 1948 released his now classic debut for Chess Records entitled "Hard Days".

Among his talent for playing, Waters also began writing songs for his fellow bluesmen such as Otis Rush. Recordings Waters made have gone on to influence virtually every 60s and 70s bluesrocker, as well as more modern players such as Stevie Ray Vaughn. Indeed, throughout the sixties, Waters would make appearances alongside counter-culture greats such as Paul Butterfield and Mike Bloomfield. In the mid-seventies, after several fairly lackluster efforts, Waters recorded four albums with albino blues legend Johnny Winter, and were critically claimed masterpieces.

By the 80s, Waters best days were behind him, and in a fit of rage fired his entire backing band in a dispute over money. On the night of April 30, 1983, Muddy Waters went to sleep, never to wake again. Muddy Waters died at his home at the age of 68 or 70, as his birthdate is still under dispute, and is buried in Illinois, close but not quite in his beloved Chicago. « hide
