Review Summary: An important work for the fledgling European death metal scene, this adapts the 'Leprosy' thrashy blueprint with surprising success

Emerging in the wake of seminal early death metal works such as 'Severed Survival' and 'Altars Of Madness,' German maestro's Morgoth's first album 'Cursed' is widely considered one of the most important early European records in the genre. Prior to this release, however, the band had already announced themselves in very powerful fashion with their 1989 EP 'Resurrection Absurd,' which could be considered a blend of the early thrash-influenced death metal found on Death's 'Leprosy,' and that more disgusting vocal style of somebody such as Donald Tardy or Autopsy's vocals. Whilst never quite cementing the legendary status of the already-mentioned artists and albums, Morgoth's early output is of a high quality, and there is an argument to say that this EP was their finest work.

The horrific nature of the album artwork, and the song titles should immediately give an impression of what is contained here. This is 80's death metal through and through, from the guttural roars of the vocals, to the simplistic thrashy riffing. The drumming does nothing especially creative, but the double bass work is something worthy of mention. The lead work is standout here, with opener "Dictated Deliverance" containing some really melodic soloing that still sounds completely at home amidst the bleak and crushing production. The real highlight, however, are those aforementioned vocals. Marc Grewe produces some absolutely insane growls here, sounding as unhinged as anything of its day. "Travel" finds him exploding atop the tempo changes, allowing a particular scream to ring out over the transition between riffs in the closest thing to a hook found here.

The songwriting itself is of a high standard, although is not really trailblazing. This definitely takes heavy inspiration from the blueprint layed by Death on their first two albums, with numerous tremolo picked riffs, and a few more mid-tempo crushing grooves. "The Afterthought" mixes things up with an eerie lead guitar line opening the track alongside one of the strongest drumming performances here. This is the only instrumental on the record, and for that reason the musicians are able to express themselves more than fitting into a verse-chorus structure. "Lies Of Distrust" is a kinetic affair, with the guitarists throwing the kitchen sink at the listener in a thunderstorm of riffing and tempo changes. The sad downside here is that the songs do very much blend into one, simply due to the unwillingness of the musicians to expand upon their sound at all with some experimentation.

As such, this is an EP that really has stood the test of time as regards songwriting and individual performances, but is let down by its time period and the fact that death metal was finding its feet, especially away from the United States. Morgoth's 'Resurrection Absurd' is an important work for its time, showcasing that European death metal acts could produce high quality material alongside their peers across the Pacific, and is a very solid listen to date.

Nice review man, pos'd! This desperately needed a thread and is a killer entry in the late 80's dm selection. Underrated band all around imo. Always had a soft spot for this EP but went on a very long winded death metal binge the other day and when I played this one it hit even harder than I recalled in the past to the point where I've been on the fringe of 4.5ing it

Edit:

"you requested us to request it from you, lol." - Technically someone said this doesnt have a review yet, which is a cry for it to get one. I did say "shoutbox it me and ill do it" though.

Yeah I'm kinda just a simpleton. If you growl/yell/shout/shriek and riff decent I tend to get all enamored for the most part lol

Cool. Go give the flamenco section of the site a work over for us. A lot of those don't have reviews, I think there's some sad guitar noises and crying.

You have more chance of me turning down a night with Billie Eilish than me doing that.
