Review Summary: Samurai Abstinence Patrol eat your heart out!
The gap between
Attitude City and
Strawberries and Creamwas exceptionally long considering how quickly things that are internet relevant fade away, but luckily for fans of Ninja Sex Party, NSP knows how to use this platform to their advantage. For the last three years NSP has been slowly releasing songs off of
Attitude City to hold fans over while they work on other musical projects. With their most anticipated release yet, the most metal band on the planet satisfies fans and newcomers for the most part with their trademark dick jokes and rocking synths.
There wasn't much fanfare when
Attitude City was officially released since the sheen on half the album was already gone, but that doesn't mean NSP have forgotten how to rock the listener's socks off. Singles like "Road Trip "and "Why I Cry" are some of NSP's best songs to date with some of their wittiest humor displayed on record. Whether it's taking a road trip to avoid a meaningful relationship or missing a long standing appointment for brunch, the band will surely earn a few good, hard laughs from listeners upon first listening. None of these jokes wear thin upon repeated plays either, and make sure to check out the hilarious and jam packed videos Danny and Brian create for a large amount of their music. If you don't take their songs too seriously NSP will certainly win you over with their zany and off the wall brand of humor.
Danny's voice is magnificent, and honestly he could sing just about anything and it would be still my heart. His harmonization at the beginning of "Why I Cry" is undoubtedly the most replayed part of any NSP song I'll listen to. His vocal delivery is spot on most of the time and is always a highlight. The one gripe I have with Danny on
Attitude City is his yelling on "Peppermint Creams". It's just annoying and very jarring compared to the rest of the song. While Brian's playing is always entertaining, there isn't much depth or originality to this album. (Honestly if you've heard an NSP album you've heard every NSP album). He gets the job done on the keyboard and is consistently great, but I hope they mess with their sound more on their next record.
While we're talking about the worst aspects of this record, let's talk about the short interlude like songs. "Dubstep", "Cookies!", and "Buttsex Goldilocks" aren't funny and they don't add anything to the album. Like "Sacred Chalice Part 1" from
Strawberries and Cream there are some duds on this record. The intro and outro to
Attitude City are also the worst ones in NSP's discography, and while it was genuinely nice to hear Danny thank their fans during the outro, it feels like it should have stayed on the booklet of the CD, and not on the actual album.
"6969", the final song on the album is a behemoth clocking in over 8 minutes long. NSP actually pulls off this Rush-esque song since they differentiate each section, so it doesn't feel like multiple NSP songs stitched together. The transitions between each section are actually fantastic and fist pumpingly addictive. The pounding and danceable synth that comes in at 4:30 is perfection. The lead singer of Steel Panther is featured on the track and his vocals are wonderfully over the top and fits the futuristic story of "6969" effectively. There are a lot of excellent aspects to "6969", and NSP surprisingly pull off this epic with ease.
Attitude City is an inconsistent effort containing NSP's highest highs and lowest lows. "6969" shows that NSP arent going to stop singing about sex in increasingly ridiculous ways anytime soon, but they need to mix up their sound a bit before the band starts to stagnate. These songs could have been on any of their other albums. There isn't much unique about this one specific release that stands out from
Strawberries and Cream or
NSFW. I still need to give credit where credit is due, and say that like every other NSP release this album is catchy as hell and funny to boot. If you haven't heard NSP yet, this is as good a place as any to start, so welcome to
Attitude City where no ***s are given.
