3 of 4 thought this review was well written

Label: Hopeless

NOTE: Please give me as little shit possible about the genre classification. I'm putting what my definition is.

Review:
I lately have been getting into the hardcore/metalcore scene. I've been a fan of Poison the Well for quite a while now and recently I had been looking into bands like Atreyu, Between the Buried And Me, Bleeding Through, Eighteen Visions and of course, Avenged Sevenfold. Avenged Sevenfold is acknowledged by many as the best hardcore act out there and after looking up some reviews on their albums, I decided to buy myself an A7X CD. Though the review here on mxtabs claimed that Walking the Fallen was the better CD, when I looked up reviews I found that Sounding the Seventh Trumpet was given four stars while Walking the Fallen received three. The first thing I heard on the CD as I popped it into my discman was soft rain. The peaceful mood was soon broken by a pounding guitar lead followed by M. Shadows singing some impressive vocals. The Cd then got to its official start and the hardcore, chaotic mood was set. Hardcore/Metalcore is one of the most underrated and frequently harassed genre. Many times have I heard, "They scream the whole time and they can't even play their instruments."

STST proves both these statements wrong. This CD is full of amazing guitar leads, thick, fast bass, unrelentless, powerful drumming and while Shadows screams most of the time, many moments slow down and we here his impressive singing voice. To make a long story short, I was blown away by this album. This surely stands as one of the greatest hardcore album and stands as a testimony that hardcore bands know how to play the intrusments, can use melody and harmony, and make some of the best songs you will hear.

To End the Rapture- Like I said, this song starts out with a rainstorm and it followed by an amazing guitar solo and soft vocals. Not a very impressive album opener but this shows right off the bat that these people can play their instruments and that you will be hearing singing on this album. 3 out of 5

Turn the Other Way- Here comes the chaos. The song starts with a crescendo of noise and M. Shadows jolts us awake with a frightening scream. The guitar come chugging in with power chords and harmonics. A unique characteristic about Avenged Sevenfold is that most of their songs have little song structure. Songs stretch on for five minute and feature like 7 different riffs. While this is annoying to some, I find it to be an excellent quality that gives A7X their unique style. Though I'm not sure who plays lead guitar, the lead guitar truly defines almost every A7X song. The guitar outro in this song wraps you up and fades into an organ and acoustic piece. 5 out of 5

Darkness Surrounding- This is the first song I heard on the album, featured on Warped Tour Compiliation 2003. It is one of the most powerful songs on the album. It features many different amazing guitar riffs and amazing backing vocals. The palm-muted guitar riff towards the end of the song gives me that feeling in my stomach. I always find myself thrashing around to this song. The song ends as Shadows alternates between screaming and singing the line "Smell burning the embers. night flickering away. Timless but soon gone. Timeless but soon gone." 5 out of 5

The Art of Subconscious Illusion- Another amazing song starts with Shadows singing and is soon followed by all out screaming with some intense lyrics. A little bit into the song Shadows asks, "This can't be happening. Why is this happening? Who the fuck are you? WHO THE FUCK?" Soon after, a strange high pitched voice screams while Shadows sings. Later on in the bridge, Shadows whispers over a spacy, frightening guitar line, "My razor sharp knife's edge, pierces my victims body. But I can't take their soul." 5 out of 5

We Come Out at Night- This song is actually a little bit softer. It starts out with an awesome drum line followed by Shadows chaotic vocals. The chorus is a pounding riff. But the end of the song first features a synth and acoustic line, backing vocals and Shadows softly sings, "Clouds swallow the moon and I'm alone. Thinking good times and why'd they go." He then comes back singing the same line but with a piano line. A good emo touch. 5 out of 5

Lips of Deceit- The song starts out with a catchy guitar line and is followed by a great bass riff. If you can manage to pick out the bass in the mess of A7X songs its actually pretty impressive. Shadows soon comes in singing. The song then quickens and Shadows begins his sonic assault of screams. Soon we hear Shadows screaming his lungs out backed only by the increasingly impressive bass line. The album keeps its pace. 5 out of 5

Warmness on the Soul- This is where the album falters in my opinion. This song is mainly piano and vocals. Though I usually like slow songs placed in between some heavy tracks, this song just sticks out in a bad way. The only thing good about this song is the guitar solo but that even sounds like something from the sixties. A failed attempt at an softer song, in my opinion. 2 out of 5

An Epic of Time Wasted- A guitar chord repeats followed by an awesome bass line. The drumming is fast and soon Shadows comes roaring in. The middle of the song brings out A7X's punk roots as the chord progression sounds like something off a Rancid album. The ending of the song starts with Shadows angrily saying, "So much time I wasted that I'd never thought it come to this." Then come the chugging power chords and the line is screamed. Then a soft guitar part as Shadows mutters about betrayal. Another awesome song and the album seems to cover up the blunder of Warmness on the Soul. 5 out of 5

Breaking their Hold- This short song reminds me of a Death By Stereo song. The vocal style is very similar. For the first time, one of the hardcore songs seems to falter, but its still an amazing song. 4 out of 5

Forgotten Faces- Another driving metal song. The bridge slows down and Shadows softly sings, "It's getting harder and harder to breath." It now occurs to me that almost every song on this album is good. Driving bass and drum. 4 out of 5

Thick and Thin- This song has a punk feel in the begining with the traditional 1 2 drum beat and amazing bass. As the chorus rolls around, all hell breaks lose as the metal chugging guitars come in. The post chorus is one of my favorite riffs on the CD as the lead guitar follows Shadows vocals. Despite the somewhat violent, crazy vocals, we find that underneath it all Shadows is singing about how he loves his family and how he'll be there for them through, "thick and thin." Another brilliant song. 5 out of 5

Streets- This song starts out with a spacy bass riff and is soon followed by punk guitars. This is probably the most punk song on the CD, a great song to throw into the brutal metal mix. 5 out of 5

Shattered by Broken Dreams- This song starts out slow with acoustic guitar. Great, another slow, emo song. But this one is actually much better then Warmness on the Soul. It picks up later in the song and turns into a full on screaming song. The acoustic line is very catchy and a good touch. A pretty decent album ender. 5 out of 5

The Good: Amazing instrumental and vocal work, melody, variety of tracks, little song structure, just an all around well crafted, hard-hitting album

The Bad: Warmness on the Soul, songs can tend to sound the same sometimes.

If You Like Avenged Sevenfold, You'd Like...: Death By Stereo, Poison the Well, Atreyu

Score: 4.3 out of 5

Warmness on the Soul... emo? Let me guess, because it's a soft song on a "hardcore" (by the way, it should be metal/metalcore) CD? And the the solo's bad because it sounds like it came from the sixties...

Wow. Just... wow.

I don't like the song at all. I usually like soft songs but this one just seems out of place and I don't think its very good. I think the guitar sounds like that because the drums play that cliche beat and it just sounds like a solo that would be in a song played in the sixties. I never said it was bad, I mention many times that Zacky or whoever is lead guitar is amazing. I just don't find the song to be good, what the fuck is wrong with that? I'm sorry I don't listen to real screamo and have different opinions on songs and genre definitions. And I guess the review is shit too?

The review's alright. I think you could've done a lot better without a crappy track-by-track. You just need to learn your genres before you start tossing the names of them around, if you ever want to be respected as a reviewer.

Why don't you like track by tracks? And by the way, do you have the Warmness on the Soul EP?

Because readers don't get an overall feel for the album. When I read a review, I want to hear about the pros and cons as a whole, what songs are best, and what songs don't belong there. I don't feel it's at all necessary to drag every single song into the mix. Albums should be summed up as a whole, not in individual little pieces. That's like reviewing a move scene-by-scene.

As for the Warmness on The Soul EP... nah. I've been looking for it for a while now but I can't find it anywhere. I know all of the songs from it, though, so it's not too big a deal to me.

I've heard most of this album, and I really like it. More than Waking the Fallen I would say.

Yeah I was listening to snippets of it. I think theres a new version of Darkness Surrounding. Metal Version of To End the Rapture which sounded weird. I didn't hear the single version of Warmness on the Soul and then one more track.

Oh yeah, good job on the review by the way. But maybe you should have at least mentioned the drum solo in Darkness Surrounding?

True, his drumming in the original Second Heartbeat is the best, I'd say.

The newer version of Second Heartbeat is, but the drumming isn't very special in that one. I think the original Second Heartbeat was on a complication CD.

The original "Second Heartbeat" was on one of the Hopelessly Devoted to You compilations.

I haven't heard much off Waking the Fallen, except for Chapter Four and a couple songs they have playing on their site. I wasn't to fond of those I won't be seeing you tonight (I think thats it) songs... Like I said, critics gave STST the better review.

I love both albums equally, they're just different.
