The description on the webpage of the band states "The Fall of Troy is everything you wish your band could be - younger, faster, louder, and well... better looking. These are the facts, but don't let it get you down. You're a snowflake, unique in your own way." And I have to confess, that it is kind of true. Well, not the better looking part, as my band mates and I all look astonishing and breath taking... *cough cough*... but I have to confess, I envy the technical depth and creativity this band shows. And, it's no real wonder that they are on my playlist almost constantly since August 05 when I first got into them. No suprise, I searched for all material I could get from them.

This is a widely unknown release by Fall of Troy. If not, the most unknown of all so far. The "Ghostship Demos" mark the bridge between the self-titled debut and the most recent record "Doppelganger". Bearing only 4 tracks, but lifting a playtime of 23 and a half minute to the scale. Good stuff. The instrumental work here is as breathtaking as it is on the other releases, fast guitar riffs, technically sophisticated, supported by well laid bass lines and beats by the rythm section. Still this one is different.

The feel of the songs is a bit different, and some interesting approaches can be heard. For example, the buil-up of tension on the first track "Ghostship Part I" is just great. A simple bass riff plays as main fundament for the first minute, with a slight and mellow drum beat in the background. Some of the sounds remind of Mars Volta, before the guitar sets in with a clean echoed lead. All this creates a somewhat spooky amtmosphere, whith some fake 'releases' in there. This Intro goes for about 1:30 minutes, before the 'actual song' kicks in. Just great. As well as the build up before the chorus. The crowning comes with the last 1:30 minutes, when all the tension and fast riffs of the song go over into a mellow melodic part. These 6:53 hold enough ideas that other bands would put at least into four songs.

Similar with the other three songs, where especially "Ghostship Part IV" and "Part V" are probably closest to the known songs. Fast paced, changes between melodic parts and screamed chaotic ones within a matter of a second. And again, with enough ideas for six songs.

The last track re-appears on the latest album"Doppelganger" and is there also the closing. Not much difference here musically, but the vocal work differes. The version of this EP is more dominated by screamed vocals. Most noticable on the intro lines, where basically only the last part is sung melodic, where on Doppelganger it's at least the half of the part, Similar to other parts there. Biggest difference here would be different effects during the instrumemntal bridge by the guitar, but apart from that, it's pretty much the same song. The edge is much more raw though, and sometimes, that fits the song better.

Overall this is another great presentation of Fall of Troy's technicallity and sophisticated instrumental work. For a Demo, the quality is also up to par with the other releases. I must confess I was quite suprised by that. If you love any of their other work, you will absolutely love this for sure. These songs might be among the best FoT have displayed so far, with Ghostship Part I clearly leading for me. If you have the chance to check this one out, do so. You won't be disappointed. If you don't like them... well, that's your loss. And what a loss that is IMO... :)

Nothing less than 4.5/5 from me

Nice review Damrod. For me, I was going to review either this or Doppelganger. This is a great demo from a great band.

I cant stand Fall of Troy. The first time I heard these demos, I was in awe, until I realized they've basically got one guitar technique they paste throughout any song they've ever done. Repetitive and overrated in my opinion. I hate the band but great review nonetheless.

Co&Cru, I was going to cite The Fall of Troy as the yang to Protest the Hero's yin. Both bands thrive on technicality but it depends on whether or not you can derive and emotional reaction from the music. With The Fall of Troy I do, and with PTH I do not.

Well, the numbering of the songs alone suggests that. Only these four are mentioned regulary though.

I just read today about the re-recording of these songs, I'm quite excited about that. Though I don't know if I ever see that here. It was a pain in the arse to get Doppelganger over here in Germany.

I respect that man. I realize these guys arent for everybody and it's the same with pth, I'm just on the other end of the spectrum.

Ya! teh totaly gay end of teh spectrum lawl

But seriously The Fall of Troy doesn't have copy and pasted riffs. There is a lot of ingenuity and variety though as a means to that to increase speed, Erak uses a lot of pull off, which is probably leading you to that assertion.

Part IV is possibly my favorite Fall of Troy song (although Mouths like Sidewinder Missiles and Act One, Scene One are also great). It starts off with a great riff and the first two minutes are just chaotic.

Boo-ya!
I was gonna think that this review was gonna turn into "Kezia: Round 2".

As for Fall of Troy, I'm still slowly getting into them. That got some great stuff goin' on with their harmonies and chord structures between the bass and guitar. The rhythms are really cool as well. The screamed vocals are probably the only thing that I still need to adjust to.

And I've yet to hear this or Doppelganger, so that's on the list. This Message Edited On 02.18.06

Either before the next new album, or after that the Ghostship Demos are supposed to be re-recorded and released under the name "Phantom on the Horizon". Some state it will come 2007 after the album they are writting now as some asume, but some state it will come out before that.

Well, we'll have to wait I guess

I dont know about a Ghostship re-release...i love the fall of troy's music, and i like the new songs on doppelganger better than alot of their older stuff, but doppelganger to me was WAY too overproduced. The production was really glossy, like all of the bands on mtv that are wrongly labeled "emo". The sad thing is, its probobly going to stay that way with their future recordings.

RIP thomas erak's career

Huh? Why does that mean it RIPs his career? Just because the production got better?

this is amazing display of there technicality and creative abilities.

though one thing i would say is that...what is this need of tom to remake every song he creates!?!?! he records the first one and then makes a "improved" version and re-releases it. its a bit odd if you ask me.

well i love sophmore albums almost always, they show a bands progress and still have a raw sound compared to a bands fourth album.

I love this sh!t. Certainly top marks for me, it combines the production qualities of Doppleganger with the note-based catchy riffage from the s/t. I found Pt. 2 as well, crappy almost-live quality, but good nonetheless. Part I and IV = power ownage. Easy 4.5/5

Why does it seem that my comments are getting deleted?
