With a career spanning over 16 years, you would expect this CD to be packed with anthems from their debut self-titled Offspring album, to the disasterous Splinter. You would think that a band with such a reputation as The Offspring, undoubtedly one of the major pop-punk bands around nowadays, to give their fans a collection of raw and uncut songs for them to listen to, letting them into a swirling life from the badly recorded songs to the poppier more mainstream ones. You would think...
This is sadly not the case. The Offspring have presented their dedicated fans with 14 tracks of pop-punk masterpieces. 14 tracks, I hear you say? Yeah, 14 out of 118. I understand that it must be difficult to decide one songs to put on greatest hits albums, but this is taking it a little too far in my opinion.
We start out with the new track, "Can't Repeat". I must admit that I am a bit of a sucker for this song, but in the end it is nothing special to listen to, especially for a greatest hits. Typical Offspring formula really; Catchy riff + occasional "Woah"'s + Dexter's rough voice = "Can't Repeat".
Then the album moves onto "Come Out And Play". Notice how they completely missed out the debut Offspring and Ignition, and album most fanboy's of this band will argue is their best album. No "Jennifer Lost The War", "Kick Him When He's Down" or "Session".
After the Smash era has passed with "Self Esteem" and "Gotta Get Away", we move onto 2 songs from Ixnay On The Hombre. My personal favourite album by the Orange Country pop-punkers, and I get 2 tracks? We are given the 2 most "listener-friendly" songs in my opinion as well, something that seems like a cheap cash-in for the band.
So now kicks in "Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)", the song that got them everywhere. Their goofiest song, reminding us why so many of their fans abandoned the band. Then we get "Why Don't You Get A Job", another goofy song to me, and "The Kid's Aren't Alright", which I will admit is one of my favourite songs by the band.
Clearly the band have lost touch with the music after we are given only 2 songs from Conspiracy Of One, a b-side (Which is probably one of their best songs as a "major" pop-punk band) and 2 more off Splinter.
It's depressing really. A band of this stature have fallen more and more into the trap of major labels. The denial of their first 2 albums, the small tracklisting of their "greatest hits". It just shows how much this band has degraded over the years.
And yet we, the fans, just hope and pray for that one good record they will make. The one where we can establish that we were right to stand by these legends ever since the anthemic Americana was released. But until then, it looks like we are still waiting, and sadly, this is not going to give us any good memories of the band.

Tell me if i'm wrong, but don't greatest hits mean most popular songs? I say this because you want some of their debut stuff but maybe these songs were not popular.

I don't really think it's fair that you only gave this a two. I know that they should have included some of their other songs that stood out in their career, (Million Miles Away, Special Delivery. Nitro, Killboy Powerhead). But they decided to include other joke songs instead. (Pretty Fly, Why Don't You Get A Job). But don't forget the DualDisc feature, there's concert footage and documentaries.This Message Edited On 06.24.05

Da Hui is a good song but its not what The Offspring are known for, but i agree that Million Miles Away should be on there. Power lutin is right the songs that are included in greatest hits albums are the bands most popular songs and most memorable.

Offspring have fallen into the same trap as greenday. The second they got success with americana they became poppy and forgot about their roots, much like green day with american idiot. Frankly i'd just buy the early albums off amazon cheap, and noth bother with the rest.

Green Day were always a "poppy" band, no matter what lesser-knowing "fans" like you think. They know their roots, but how could you play the same exact 3 chord, fast song over and over for the rest of you life?

I would have preferred more of a "singles collection" rather than a greatest hits. There would have been more tracks, including stuff like i'll be wating, million miles away, ect. Also Kif, None of the songs on the cd were Nitro Records released. Smash And Ixnay were both released through Epitaph.
Anyway, this is the cd that fulfills the offsprings contract with Columbia isn't it? So I would expect Them to switch to Nitro Records. The singer owns the label after all.

This greatest hit's isen't worth your time I don't think. But then again, I only like their first 3 albums. Their new single is boring, and sounds alot like "The Kids Aren't Alright". To me anyway.

At least Green Day released a REAL greatest hits. 21 songs. Now that's quality AND quantity.
There should have been more songs on this one.

Whether you like those GD songs or not is not really the point. At least they filled the disc. They tried.
Where's 'The Meaning Of Life', 'Million Miles Away', or 'Way Down The Line'?

people calm down, the ablum is still good, it has the mahorrity of their best songs on it, i agree that million miles away shouldve been on it, but the rest are good, very good, my favs original prankster :p
an what is it with ALL music fans that think that everybands newer stuff is sh1t!? green day american idiot, everyone thinks it sux, metallica st anger, same then splinter from offspring, there all good albums, you people just think to much about their older stuff an assume there newer stuff sux, while in some cases the newer stuff isnt AS good as the older stuff, it is still good...damn i typed to much, o well :p

Very True Desensitized. Way Down the line wasn't a single though. The singles they missed were I'll Be Waiting, The Meaning Of Life, I Choose, She's Got Issues, Million Miles Away, and Spare Me The Details.
This album could have really used I Choose, I'll Be Waiting and Million Miles Away. It shows what The Offspring Realistically sound like most of the time. This Album is a one sided representation of half of the offsprings sound.
Perhaps there was some conflict as to how many songs they could put on from the record label?

I agree though. 'I Choose' and the others you mentioned were good ones.
In the age of greatest hits the literally pack the cd full, this is dissapointing. Even if the songs included are good.

If you like the first half of the cd, buy smash and ignition.
If you liked the second half of the cd best, buy Americana and Conspiracy of One.
