definitely their best album in years, by far Alissa's best performance, some decently strong songwriting and Jeff Loomis finally getting a chance to let loose on his guitar a bit, makes for a solid MDM record

Pentakill III: Lost Chapter4.5
Definitely a different Pentakill album than the previous two, leaning more towards progressive/heavy metal rather than the power/thrash angle than before. It really does suit them, but the choice of Tyler Smith of The Word Alive as the third vocalist is certainly an odd one.
Iron Maiden Senjutsu4.0

it's still by the numbers dad rock that heavily relies on the nostalgia factor...but unlike before, there seems to be some actual creativity in the music, and I'm not gonna lie, it's really not all bad.

It certainly shows its age through it's production and songwriting, but that's part of it's charm

Edit: and God said, let it be a 3.9

Epica The Quantum Enigma B-Sides4.5
Speech Patterns Without a Sound4.0
Pain of Salvation Panther4.0

This feels more like a spiritual successor to Assassination of Julius Caesar, which is a slight disappointment seeing how much these guys tend to experiment with their sound. Still though, a lot of catchy tunes on this record.
Seether Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum4.0
SIAMES Home4.0
Black Crown Initiate Violent Portraits of Doomed Escape4.0
Reminds me more of Between The Buried And Me than Opeth but this is still some solid stuff.

Had this been mixed properly this would've been much better, as it stands now though it's better than their last two records but not much else.
Nightwish HUMAN. :II: NATURE.4.0
Heaven Shall Burn Of Truth and Sacrifice4.0
This would've made for a kickass 10-11 track record. Music itself is nothing that special but it's still good for what it is.
Myrkur Folkesange4.0
I love most of her black metal stuff, but this is equally as awesome.

Thornhill Butterfly4.5

Production lacks a bit of bite and can get a bit samey at times, but for those that really enjoy this brand of Scandinavian melodeath, you'll definitely be pleased.
Highly Suspect MCID2.0
Counterparts Nothing Left to Love5.0
Subway To Sally HEY!4.0
Kinda like Rammstein, you have no idea what the lyrics mean but you just go along for the ride and you end up having a great time anyways.
Rings of Saturn Gidim1.0
I wonder how many riffs they stole to make this record
Alcest Spiritual Instinct4.0
Thornhill The Dark Pool4.5
Bad Wolves N.A.T.I.O.N.3.0
Saint Asonia Flawed Design3.0
another day, another standard alt rock album
Norma Jean All Hail5.0
Leprous Pitfalls4.5
Jinjer Macro3.5
Tatianna's vocals are great but this production on this is total ass.
Fit for an Autopsy The Sea of Tragic Beasts4.5
Uneven Structure Paragon4.0
Clean vocals are still kinda ass but overall this is much better than La Partition
Alter Bridge Walk The Sky3.5
it's just more Alter Bridge, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but they really need to start tweaking their sound a bit more and get a different producer if they want to stay relevant.
Jimmy Eat World Surviving4.0
Toothgrinder I Am2.0
Three Days Grace sure are consistent aren't they?
Lacuna Coil Black Anima3.5
The Devil Wears Prada The Act4.0
This is their best album so far. Mike's harsh vocals are still shit, but everything else sounds good. They're actually beginning to develop their own sound.
BABYMETAL Metal Galaxy3.5
The Menzingers Hello Exile3.0
Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds Ghosteen5.0
We Lost the Sea Triumph and Disaster3.0
Insomnium Heart Like a Grave4.0

Insomnium One for Sorrow4.0
Sonata Arctica Talviyo1.5
Teramaze Anhedonia3.5
Starset Divisions1.5
Korn The Nothing3.5
Sleeping With Sirens How It Feels to Be Lost2.5
going from electro-pop to mainstream radio rock, I guess it's an improvement?
Sylosis Edge of the Earth4.0
Wage War Pressure2.5
Tool Fear Inoculum2.0
7empest might as well be one of their best songs to date, and Chocolate Chip Trip is a fun little instrumental, shame I can't say the same with the rest of the album, everything else is just so goddamn boring.
DragonForce Extreme Power Metal2.5
the Marc Hudson version of "Ultra Beatdown"
ERRA Moments of Clarity3.5
Insomnium Across the Dark4.0
Off With Their Heads Be Good4.0
The Butterfly Effect Begins Here3.5
Moron Police Defenders of the Small Yard4.0
This is one of the dumbest albums I've ever heard in my life and yet I just can't stop listening to it
Moron Police Boat on the Sea4.0
Just a really fun, uplifting, feel-good power pop record. Listen to it whenever you're in a down mood.
The Offering Home4.5
Teramaze Her Halo4.0
Shadow Of Intent Melancholy5.0
Ditching the Halo theme was the smartest move they ever did. By far their best album to date.
Teramaze Are We Soldiers4.5
definitely could've benefited from a 15-20 minute cut, but this is still one of the best prog metal albums of the year
Teramaze Esoteric Symbolism4.5
Killswitch Engage Atonement3.0
The Signal Fire and The Crownless King are cool jams but almost everything else is just been-there-done-that metalcore. Nothing awful other than the fact that KSE are stuck in their own complacency
The Contortionist Our Bones2.5
Crown the Empire Sudden Sky2.0
The Black Dahlia Murder Ritual4.0
Slipknot We Are Not Your Kind3.0
Why the fuck does this have a 100 on Metacritic?
Tool Undertow3.0
As Cities Burn Scream Through the Walls3.5
Northlane Singularity4.0
Skillet Victorious2.5
I mean, it's a Skillet album. But for a Skillet album, there's some surprisingly solid stuff in here.
Bad Omens Finding God Before God Finds Me4.0
These guys can't escape the BMTH comparisons the same way that no one can stop comparing Greta Van Fleet to Led Zeppelin.

Still though, this is great
Northlane Discoveries3.5
Northlane Alien4.5
There's practically an industrial metal vibe to this and it suits them really nicely. It's their best album with Marcus, and might be their best album overall.
Sylosis Conclusion of an Age4.0
Children of Bodom Follow the Reaper4.0
Machine Head The More Things Change...3.5
Wolves at the Gate Eclipse3.5
Definitely their most "mainstream" record. It's got good production, nice melodies and great performances from both vocalists, yet at the same time there's nothing here that other bands haven't done before, some even better. It's a solid record, but nothing really blew me away.
The Raven Age Conspiracy3.0
Oh, Sleeper Bloodied/Unbowed4.0
State Faults Clairvoyant4.5
The Callous Daoboys Die on Mars4.0
It's like TDEP and Every Time I Die came together and had Jon Mess made lyrics for them. It's VERY tongue-in-the-cheek but a good amount of fun
Thank You Scientist Terraformer4.5
Baroness Gold and Grey3.5
mixing is kinda ass and it's 15 minutes too long, still a pretty decent record overall
Daniel Tompkins Castles2.5
just take the guitars out of Tesseract and what your left with is this
Rammstein Untitled4.0

Rammstein Mutter4.0

TesseracT Concealing Fate4.0
PUP Morbid Stuff4.0
Periphery Clear3.0
Periphery Periphery IV: Hail Stan4.0
I Prevail TRAUMA3.0
album reminds me of Fever 333, good vocalists, good energy, and good instrumentation that's bogged down by cringey lyrics and really odd songwriting choices. still though there are some legit good songs on here.
Whitechapel The Valley4.0
Devin Townsend Empath5.0
Battle Beast No More Hollywood Endings3.5
Cut this by about 10-15 minutes and you have yourself a really solid, fun as fuck pop-metal album. Noora's vocals only add to this.
Haywyre Panorama: Form3.5
Fallujah Undying Light3.5
album is totally fine. sure a bit monotonous, but completely fine.
Baroness Red Album3.5
Orbit Culture Odyssey4.0
Orbit Culture In Medias Res4.5
Tyr Hel3.5
Marianas Trench Phantoms4.0
definitely one of the better pop rock albums in recent years
Children of Bodom Hexed4.0

Queensryche The Verdict3.5
In Flames I, the Mask2.5
Did the Jester just turn into a mummified vagina?
Badflower OK, I’M SICK4.0
Rhapsody of Fire The Eighth Mountain4.0
Giacomo has warmed up to me for sure. Still, no one can replace Fabio for me, and Giacomo can be a little whiny for sure, but I think he did a good job with this record. Album is a lot of fun for those who are in the mood for some good cheese.
Dream Theater Distance Over Time4.0
Dream Theater's best album in 17 years, hands down.
Avantasia Moonglow4.5
Soen Lotus3.5
Beast In Black From Hell With Love4.5
I was afraid from the first two singles that this was going to be another one of those shitty "80s nostalgia throwback" albums that we've been getting a lot of recently, but thankfully that isn't the case at least for the most part. They still retain that metal edge here, and man this album is album is fucking fun.
Front Line Assembly Wake Up the Coma4.0
it's nothing that really goes outside FLA's comfort zone, but nonetheless another fine addition to their mostly excellent discography
Emarosa Peach Club2.0
another pop rock album that sounds like every pop rock album out there
Dream Theater Train of Thought3.5
Astronoid Astronoid4.0
Breathe Atlantis Soulmade3.5
Manchester Orchestra Cope3.5
Within Temptation Resist3.5
a very fun pop-metal album. great vocals with a very polished production and good instrumentation. though I do wish the guitars had a bit more punch to them.
Swallow the Sun When a Shadow Is Forced into the Light4.0
Bring Me the Horizon Amo2.5
Kanye West did this album art way better tbh
The Dillinger Escape Plan Miss Machine4.5
Too Close to Touch I'm Hard to Love, But So Are You, Vol. 13.0
Hopefully they won't stick to this direction entirely. They're good at mixing their pop with their rock, but I feel like they should stick with mixing them if they want to stay relevant.
Subway To Sally Bastard4.0
FEVER 333 Strength In Numb333rs3.0
Demon Hunter Peace3.5
Demon Hunter War4.0
Gojira L'Enfant Sauvage4.0
Born of Osiris The Simulation3.0
It's another Born of Osiris album. It's fun, well produced, and catchy, but that's really all it is in the end which doesn't amount to much. Though the short album length does benefit.
Orbit Culture Rasen4.5
Orbit Culture Redfog4.0
Breathe Atlantis Futurestories3.5
Breathe Atlantis Shorelines3.0
Soilwork Verkligheten4.5
you're talking about a guy who thinks that Bring Me The Horizon is the new Jesus. what else were you expecting?
Currents I Let the Devil In3.5
pretty good stuff, nothing really too out of the ordinary but solid overall.
Within Temptation The Unforgiving4.0
Lovebites Clockwork Immortality4.5
Powerwolf The Sacrament of Sin3.5
Haywyre Panorama: Discover3.5
This guys always is always a ball of fun to listen to and this EP is another example. Nothing too out of the ordinary but still a joy to listen to regardless.
Conception My Dark Symphony4.0
Roy sounds like he never left
Omnium Gatherum The Burning Cold4.0
Thousand Below The Love You Let Too Close3.5
pretty solid, straight forward alt-rock/post hardcore. Nothing really special but these guys definitely have a lot of potential ahead of them
Memphis May Fire Broken2.5
as someone who never really gave a shit about this band, I found this to be completely 100% average. Nothing awful, nothing great, just your typical post-hardcore/hard rock album that literally does nothing new or exciting.
Asking Alexandria Reckless and Relentless3.5
Failure Fantastic Planet4.0
Greta Van Fleet Anthem of the Peaceful Army2.0
I'm really getting tired of these "retro-70s/80s throwback rock" bands

it's getting old and stale, much like the music they're playing
Voices from the Fuselage Odyssey: The Founder of Dreams4.0
A great debut album that's followed by an even better sophomore effort. These guys are definitely on the road to great things.
Imagine Dragons Origins1.0
Muse Simulation Theory1.0
I didn't know Matt Bellamy was going direct Ready Player Two
Architects Holy Hell4.0
"Hey mods can you do your job and remove all these premature 5s?? It's fucking up the 2018 best of chart, no reason this should be #2. Album will be average as always these dudes have been releasing the same song for years."

This is coming from a guy who rated this a month before it was released
All That Remains Victim of the New Disease3.0
Fit for a King Deathgrip3.5
Time, The Valuator How Fleeting, How Fragile4.5
It's like taking the best parts of Hands Like Houses, Dead Letter Circus, TesseracT and Monuments and mixing them into one album, and it's absolutely fantastic.
The Ocean Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic4.0
Witherfall A Prelude to Sorrow3.0
it's certainly heavier and more technical than their last album, but at the same time I feel like a lot of the fun moments are just sucked out at the same time. This was actually pretty boring for the most part.
Svavelvinter Mörkrets Tid4.0
the best Christian Alvestam album since Holographic Universe
Daughters You Won't Get What You Want4.5
Fucked Up Dose Your Dreams3.0
This would be a lot better if it was literally cut in half, but fuck me there's no way I can sit through 90 minutes of this.
Dream On Dreamer Loveless3.5
Fit for an Autopsy Absolute Hope Absolute Hell4.0
Dream On Dreamer It Comes and Goes3.5
more or less an album for those who are disappointed in what Hands Like Houses are doing right now. Still a solid little post-hardcore album regardless.
Bad Omens Bad Omens3.5
"a Sempiternal copycat band."

still better than Sempiternal tbh
Fight The Fury Still Breathing3.0
definitely a shit ton better than what Skillet are doing now. Nothing really original or even unfamiliar for them in general, but still a fun little hard rock EP nonetheless.
Devour The Day Signals3.0
still not original by any means, but there are some good moments on here. a much needed improvement over their last snooze-fest
Behemoth The Satanist4.0
Haken Vector4.5
Haken tone down their awful keyboard work from last time and shorten down the album length, and in return we end up with one of the best prog albums of the year.
Northward Northward2.5
Floor Jensen is such a great vocalist, but this is just another complete waste of her talent
Soulfly Ritual3.0
Silent Planet When the End Began5.0
Nothing But Thieves What Did You Think When You Made Me This Way?4.0
these guys are on a roll
Amaranthe Helix2.5
I've always wondered why people found this band so average, now I know
Disturbed Evolution1.0
ironic album title tbh
All That Remains This Darkened Heart3.5
Atreyu In Our Wake3.0
Seventh Wonder Tiara3.5
typical prog metal tbh, but certainly fun for sure
Mycelia Apex4.5
not as good as Dawn, but still it still solidifies Mycelia as one of the best and most overlooked death metal acts out there
Chevelle 12 Bloody Spies: B-Sides and Rarities4.0
Poets of the Fall Ultraviolet4.0
can't recall the last time we've gotten a really good pop rock record
Hands Like Houses -Anon.4.0
this is a completely different band that released Dissonants and Unimagine, though I'm not gonna lie, this album is fucking FUN.
Estrons You Say I'm Too Much, I Say You're Not Enough2.5
sounds like Paramore if they tried to make a post-punk record
Unprocessed Covenant3.5
this thing is groovy as fuck, though the vocals aren't really that interesting
Behemoth I Loved You at Your Darkest4.0
Ice Nine Kills The Silver Scream4.5
It's the type of ridiculous tongue-in-the-cheek, cheesy metalcore that we've come to hate within the past few years, but Ice Nine Kills for the most part manages to make it work in the best way possible and I have no idea why.
Twenty One Pilots Trench3.5
Coheed and Cambria Vaxis I: The Unheavenly Creatures4.5
Monuments (UK) Phronesis3.0
Sacrificing most of their djenty grooves in favor of a more meat-and-potatoes metalcore sound, a sad disappointment indeed. Though the album isn't without some pretty darn good bangers.
Ice Nine Kills Every Trick in the Book4.0
Ice Nine Kills The Predator Becomes the Prey3.5
Poets of the Fall Signs of Life4.0
mewithoutYou [Untitled]4.5
If Sowing doesn't 5 this I'll be disappointed

Why hasn't Voivod rated this album yet?

Between the Buried and Me Automata II4.0
Hopesfall Arbiter4.0
Definitely a solid record for sure, but being honest there isn't really all that much that particularly blew me away. They've established a solid atmosphere for this album (as per usual) with great instrumentation and a decent lead vocal performance, but it all feels a bit one-dimensional at times.

For an album that's supposed to reflect on what Mike has gone through over the past year I was expecting something more powerful and emotionally resonant. Not saying that it doesn't have it's moments for sure, but I feel like he should've gone the extra mile here.
