This CD is worth the price of admission just for the unreleased, beautiful and classic "Blind" but most of its songs have been previously released on Love of Life or other albums. All songs are wonderful though, and if they weren't all previously released, I could go as high as a 4.5 or 5 on this one.

If you like Lou Reed, it's not a stretch that you'll like this album. But if you don't like Reed, yet like Metallica, you're probably not going to like this... That's because it is in no way a departure for Lou Reed. This sounds like a heavy metal Lou Reed album. And save for a few moments when James Hetfield's singing sounds more like yodeling than singing ("Small town gurrrl!"), this is a more than solid heavy metal Lou Reed album.
Bob Dylan New Morning3.5
A solid album, it's not anywhere close to Dylan's most solid efforts. However, stellar songs like "If Not for You" and "The Man in Me" elevate my rating from a 3 to a 3.5.

Wow, this is the best KMFDM album I've heard since Attak, and it ranks with Nihil and Xtort, too! Good to see they still have it in them.
Isaac Hayes Hot Buttered Soul4.0
David Gilmour David Gilmour3.5
A very good album of music. My problem with Gilmour is that he always lacks vision - There is no purpose to the music beyond the music, there's nothing to me that makes it transcend. Gilmour is such a gifted musician that his solo music usually almost manages to transcend anyway.... But it just doesn't quite make it. rGreat album though, has Gilmour in top form on the heels of Floyd's Animals.
Brazilian Girls New York City3.5
Radiohead The King of Limbs4.0
Very excited to hear this album; then it turned out to be very neurotic and unlistenable. Gave it three chances, and then I let it grow on my subconscious for a couple weeks. Popped it back in, and wow, it turned out to be anohter great Radiohead album. rIn ten years when people are trying to assign describtions and attributes to The King of Limbs, I hope they remember how surprising and foreign it sounded at first listen. There' a lot of exciting stuff quietly going on this beautiful stranger of an album, and it's going to take many listens to completely understand it. The King of Limbs at first seems like a misfire, but likely, it's going to wind up yet another game changer in the music industry to come out of Radiohead.

Album is better than Sex Reflex, and the songs are still great, but it doesn't hold a candle to Suckpump. Tis a shame...
Roger Waters Music from The Body 3.5
Recorded around the Atom Heart Mother / Ummagumma period in 1970, most of this album is like the song "Granchester Meadows". Whispered acoustic guitar songs. Very good if you're into the period - Lots of strange experimental noises too, as in the aforementioned Floyd albums.
Richard Wright Broken China3.0
If A Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division Bell sound like David Gilmour solo albums in whcih he's actually TRYING to make a good album, then Rick Wright's Broken China sounds like Rick Wright trying to make a bad David Gilmour solo album. The music is all lush keyboards, but it's devoid of the melodies Wright used to revel in on Floyd's early albums. This is his first and only solo album after the Floyd's last album and his second and last ever. It's too bad it couldn't have been better. Still not bad, but it shouldn't be the first Floyd solo album you pick up.
Blonde Redhead 234.0
Skrew Dusted4.0
Another brutal album of industrial thrash from Skrew. Although I have rated this album the same '4' that I gave 'Burning in Water, Drowning in Flame', it is not quite as good as its predecessor. Still, Skrew still has it on this album, even without Danny Lohner. Highly recced band for industrial metalheads.

I'm much more a fan of the Velvet Underground than Reed's solo work, but this album is just awesome. A live album, Reed engages the crowd throughout with anecdotes, and at other times, insights into how songs were written. Beyond that, there are some beautiful and unique versions of VU songs as well as solo songs. Best solo album I've heard from Reed, and it makes me want to give his actual solo albums (this one is a live album) another shot.

The Velvet Underground Squeeze2.0
This was a VU release that did not have a single original member, including Lou Reed. After White Light / White Heat, Reed replaced John Cale with Doug Yule in order to pursue a softer, more mainstream-appealing sound. The next two albums were solid, but different - Very soft and guitar-hook oriented. When Reed disbanded VU after Loaded, Doug Yule managed to somehow retain license to record as VU - And that's what we have here. I don't think it can truly be called a VU album outside of legality.

Just when I had given up finding more brilliant, kick-ass industrial metal, I found this. GET IT. It may only be 25 minutes (plus 10 minutes of noise on the title track, and the single version of one of the songs), but it's an awesome 25 minutes!

Bob Dylan The Bootleg Series, Vol. 1-3 1961-19914.5
After collecting all of Dylan's '60s material, I was really disappointed when I ran out! But have no fear, the first three volumes of the bootleg series have about 35 more songs from Dylan's folk period to supplement the four folk albums (Bob Dylan, The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, The Times Are A Changin, and Another Side of Bob Dylan). In addition to the smorgasboard of unreleased folk material from Dylan's first few years, the other disc and a half has outtakes, alternates, and and unreleased songs from 1965 to 1991. Of course, some of the 80s stuff is pretty bad, but that's to be expected, and there isn't much of that collected here anyway. The collection offers another glimpse at what Dylan was like as he progressed - This is actually the first glimpse I've seen that suggests that his maturation was more subtle and less dramatic than the simple progression of changes in tone from album to album would suggest. Buy this as soon as you have collected all Dylan's 60s albums, and then as soon as you have heard a good array of 70s and 80s too, and it will be a great treat!

The Velvet Underground Another View3.5
Released in the mid-eighties, Another View was a collection of previously unreleased songs. For those of you disappointed that the Velvets only released four albums in their short time of 1967 to 1970, VU, the other unreleased collection, and Another View, are real treats. This isn't the place to start though - These are not real albums, and they are not nearly as good as the real albums. It's wonderful though to hear it after hearing the original four. These were recorded in between White Light / White Heat and the self-titled, and so by listening to these, you get an opportunity to see how the Velvets moved from the harsh abrasive screeches of the Nico album and White Light, which featured John Cale, to the gentle acoustic and mainstream sounds of their last two albums, with Doug Yule playing a minimized role as Cale's replacement. Cale is only on a scant few of the tracks from VU and Another View, while Yule is there for most.
For someone who has heard the original four albums, Another View and its predecessor are not to be missed.

Some awesome songs, but a bad track order. The ten-minute John Cale assisted whitenoise masterpiece "We Will Fall" should've closed out the album. Because it's in the middle, the album loses any and all cohesiveness and sounds like two EPs.

Ministry's second album is the first on which Jourgenson was allowed to do his own thing without label pressure. It's still completely unlike any Ministry album to follow. Get this last, and only if you like The Land of Rape and Honey - LORAH is similar in sound, though heavier than this. rOn an edited note - Really getting into this further.... Even boosting my rating to a 3.5!
Ministry Filth Pig4.0
Regarded as the greatest Ministry "dud, this album is actually pulverizing in its dead slow sledgehammer pounding crawl. Give it several listens, it really grows on you! Awesome songs = "Dead Guy", "Reload", and "Hot Lava"

Ministry Rio Grande Blood4.5
Ministry Animositisomina5.0
This is the quintessential heavy industrial album. It's certainly heavier than anything Ministry ever did before, and unlike its three successors, the speed-metal induced Bush-Bash Trilogy, this one's still danceable.
Ministry Dark Side of the Spoon4.0
Another album regarded as a "dud" by Ministry - I'm really not sure why though! Sounds a LOT like Psalm 69, especially when you compare DSS's "Supermanic Soul" to P69's "NWO". Give this album a shot after Psalm 69 and the albums from the 2000s if you still want more! It won't disappoint

The Velvet Underground The Velvet Underground & Nico5.0
The Velvet Underground White Light/White Heat5.0
Personally, this is my favorite album by the Velvet Underground. It takes the sound of "Heroin" and ?European Son" and pushes it to the limit seeing just how far they can take it. The title track is an amazing little ditty of sonic noise that John Lennon would have done heroin to for days on end. "The Gift" is an experiment with placing an amusing spoken-word short story over their noise-sound, and the effect is mesmerizing until "plop!" the song ends - Beautiful Reed-written lyrics spoken by Cale. The hypnosis carries into the next song though, "Lady Godiva's Operation", and the energy streamlines through soft interlude ("If She Ever Comes Now", a hint at the sound of the self-titled album that came next) into fucking heavy "I Heard Her Call My Name" - Between Tucker's pounding drums and Cale's raucous organs and electric instrumentation, you totally feel it when Reed yells, "and then my mind split open!" The album culminates in the epic "Sister Ray" a beautiful 17-minute arrangement of noise that many find it difficult to stomach at first - but do try - the synthesis of noise and pulsating beat is like the peak section of "Heroin" the whole way through - the song really is quite a feat, and it nearly broke the whole band up. At the very least, it's probably one of the reasons Reed's partner John Cale was fired (imagine John Lennon firing Paul McCartney!).
The Velvet Underground The Velvet Underground4.5
Whoa, what is this? If you were expecting the third installment of the Velvet Underground you knew and loved, think again. The self-titled sounds more like Simon and Garfunkel (really, it's that gentle) than the controlled chaos of White Light / Heat. The band has fired John Cale, the electric cellos and violas are completely gone from the sound. Introspective and quiet songs like "Candy Says" and "Some Kinda Love" would influence the other half of the next generation or two of songwriters that were NOT punking it up, while songs like "What Goes On in Your Mind" proved the Velvets could still groove in their peaceful new sound. Give this one a good chance so that you can comfortably delve into the rest of the discography!
The Velvet Underground Loaded4.5
If the View compilations are transitions between White Light / White Heat, then Loaded is a transition to Lou Reed's solo albums. The Velvet Underground took sound of the third album (the self-titled) and turned up the volume a little bit, and also made the songs catchier. "Who Loves the Sun", "Rock 'n' Roll', and possibly their most famous song of all, "Sweet Jane" finally get the Velvets some radio play, and capitalize on the patented Velvet groove, despite Moe Tucker's absence and the replacement of Doug Yule's brother on the drums. The epic "Oh! Sweet Nothin'" that closes the album is not to be missed.
The Velvet Underground VU3.5
Unreleased tracks?! For those of you disappointed to find your journey into the Velvets' discography end so quickly (only four albums) this and Another View will be a real treat. There are 16 or 17 songs never put to record, and a few different versions of ones you know. VU and Another View also provide a window of insight (a missing link if you will) into the Velvet Underground's transformation from screeching proto-punk to soft, gentle acoustic sound.

This album gets a lot of flak for lacking direction, but I think people are just confused by Sonic Youth's usual willingnes to indulge in noise, which they do more on this release than others. From the Burroughs artwork, t the awesome music, this album IMO is one of their best.

One of the best Best Ofs by any band ever. The only Best Of I would ever consider giving a 5. If you buy this though, you'd better use it ad a reference point to go further into the Floyd!

My old profile is dudeinthepassinglane ; see my review there. Revitalized Dylan's career through a re-envisioned, self-cultivated recreation of his legend through ghostly music that makes Dylan seem the ghost of himself, all power inherent in that image intact. Some just plain beautiful songs.... Anyway, read my old review if you want a more precise examination!

Bob Dylan Dylan [2007 - 3-Disc Edition]4.0
Good array of Dylan. Awesome to listen to for a rough chronological appraisal of Dylan's career in 3 hours. But there is so much missing! Desire is second among the seventies albums only to Blood On the Tracks for instance, and it is only represented by "Hurricane". On the third disc, Dylan's 80s, 90s, and 2000s era could have coe off much better with a different selection of songs (in many cases, though not all).
If you've never heard any Dylan, and are thinking of getting into his stuff, this is a good one to start with. I will introduce you to many periods, and from there, you can dive into whichever album draws you the most!
