While I do enjoy this album, it's hard not to feel like it comes off flat for too much of its runtime. Fall into the Light and S2N show off some fresh ground for the band, like with the former's modern-sounding, prog metal riffs, but even the latter feels like a shell of another, arguably better song, during part of its chorus (The Looking Glass). And while I enjoyed Out of Reach, it's not the most original attempt at a DT ballad. IMO, At Wit's End is the best song here, with great emotion and progression throughout, and a particularly strong performance by James LaBrie. On the other hand, Barstool Warrior and Room 137 are two of DT's worst songs to date, with their goofy lyrics and execution. Viper King was a bit of a pleasant surprise, though, and despite also being goofy, its great energy and out-there style make it work, somehow. The rest of Distance Over Time consists of simply decent enough, fairly standard, Dream Theater fare. Overall, the album is just a bit too uninspired to be a truly noteworthy release in the band's lengthy discography, but it does show that DT might have more gas left in the tank than their self-titled or The Astonishing let on. Oh, and thank god this one isn't 2+ hours long... |

They said they'd switch things up, and thank god they actually did. After losing not only their talented drummer, but their lead guitarist too, they've done the smartest thing possible by focusing on impressive and poppy vocal performances rather than forcing less than stellar instrumentation/scene heaviness, like on their last effort. And when there is actual instrumentation, it hits harder than ever before, thanks to Birch's renewed, more intense screams. But most of the time, the band's metalcore tendencies take a back seat to varied vocals and well produced electronic melodies, giving the band a chance at finally starting fresh. Introducing a pop sensibility was the best thing for Amity. TL;DR It's catchy, sometimes goofy (D.I.E. especially...), but always fun and fresh. |

After two very impressive, near flawless LPs, the Allah Las make their first ever misstep with this subpar, albeit generally pleasant, release. There are no particularly memorable or noteworthy tracks, and not a single instrumental to be found. The only thing really carrying the band through this short outing is their technical skill. Overall, way too laid back, to the point of being boring, but still a bit better than your average surf rock through sheer competence on behalf of the band. |

The album is consistently "okay." ISS never quite reaches their potential with this new and, frankly, very likable shift in style. I constantly got the feeling that something was missing or holding the album back. It just doesn't quite click and teases listeners by often coming close, only to stumble. Only real standouts for me are Break and Light in the Cave. |

There's some serious potential here, but most of the album falls just short of greatness, due to inconsistency. There's too much genre hopping, making the fact that Way hasn't found his style yet painfully obvious. That being said, the album is quite fun throughout, and tracks like Brother and No Shows prove that Way is capable of pulling off admirable solo work. The former, in particular, is considerably well-put together, and has a tone and energy that make Way sound more alive than he has in years. The solid production also helps the album sound more distinct and interesting, through the use of ambient effects and distortion included in many of the tracks. Overall, while the album has plenty of fun moments, Way's inexperience as a solo artist is often too apparent. |

this might be good if Parker didn't sound half asleep the entire time. the band tries to make the EP sound emotional by toning down the performances, but that only impairs every song, save for Navy Blue. the worst offence is easily the pathetic rendition of The Glass, which makes one of the best TSSF songs sound comical. shame, shame. |

the lyrics here are often too on the nose and personal for their own good, and the angst has been turned up to 11. luckily, the vocal duties have been returned to a 50/50 split, preventing the cleans from getting too monotonous, like they did on Chasing Ghosts. Nevertheless, the album doesn't have as many catchy and immediately memorable tracks as either of their last two LPs, making the songs run together some. still, the album features a worthy set of songs all throughout, which all feature superior production to the band's last two efforts. it's more of a grower than Youngbloods or Chasing Ghosts, but if a more polished and gloomier than usual TAA sounds like a good time, check it out. |

the production is easily the best the band's had in their discography and it gives a great, spacey atmosphere to the album. aside from the overly frequent breakdowns, there are some catchy and memorable riffs(see Broken Cross and Gravedigger), and Carter's vocals are consistently competent, if not a little grating after extended periods. while there isn't a ton of variety between tracks, the album as a whole is a worthwhile and fun listen all throughout. Hollow Crown this is not, but it stands on its own as the most well put together Architects release since said LP and is well worth a listen. Blegh. |

their first album was MUCH better. this one drags much more, Spencer's vocals are less
impressive(his growls sound like the dude from Abandon All Ships now), and there just isn't
anywhere near as much to hook me as before. the album has lots of cool sounding little
moments, but not many entire songs that are done completely right(Ragnarok is a strong
exception). |

Way too many acoustic sounding tracks, for my taste. This might as well be a Max Bemis solo album, most of the time. Overall okay, nonetheless. Nowhere near as good as their previous three albums, but the solid lyrics make up for its mediocre aspects and lack of energy some of the time. Most of the songs are still forgettable, despite the good lyrics though. Also, it doesn't sound like ...Is a Real Boy in the slightest. |

The majority of the album is extremely generic and boring. Almost every track sounds indistinguishable from the last, other than the solid "the motivation" and "the wretched". If every track were as good as those two, this album would easily get at least a 3.5 from me. The fact that the two best tracks are the only ones without much chugging is no coincidence. If the band could just move past their crabcore roots and stick with the faster paced style of the aforementioned tracks, they could be taken more seriously and become much better artists. |

no electronic-hardcore band has since, or will ever, be able to pull this off again, not reven FE themselves. this album may not be overly technical or revolutionary, but it rrepresents the very peak of what "trancecore" is capable of. i would argue that the rcomposition of the songs is worth noting as being the primary reason this is so great, but ri'm not sure if the producer or a particular member of the band is responsible for fine rtuning it so well.rtl;drrthis is one of the most fun and enjoyable albums i've ever heard. simple as that. |
