'68 In Humor and Sadness | 3.5 |
There are some really killer tracks, and Josh is shockingly good at signing as well as his harsh vocals, but the album feels a bit disjointed and just doesn't hit like I hoped it would. It's still a great album, but it needs some work.
Also the song titles are kind of dumb.
EDIT: And just like with The Chariot, a lot of this works better in a live setting. |

Body and Blood is amazing, Tonight is fucking horrible, and the rest ranges from painfully boring to decent. |
Death Grips The Powers That B - Part I: Niggas on the Moon | 4.0 |
I love Death Grips. I love what they do, I love that they truly could not give a single solitary shit about what people think about them, and I love that every album they drop is out of the blue with little to no warning. That being said, this album almost seems abrasive and "out there" simply for the sake of being so. While their earlier albums were chaotic, there was at least a semblance of structure and coherence, and even a bit of melody within the noise. But this just sounds like an absolute mess at times and though the inclusion of Bjork is nice, she doesn't save this from being very poorly executed at times. And the lyricism is completely foolish for the most part. "Tame and cashmere go together. Cashmere makes perfect better." Seriously?
I will always listen to a new DG album, but these last two efforts do not leave me hopeful for the future.
EDIT: Okay maybe I was a bit harsh at first. Still disjointed as fuck, but it's decent. |

I'm not even going to try to finish this. 3 AM is probably the worst thing I've heard in a while. God awful, cheesy as fuck pop-punk complete with a piano and violin interlude because "we're oh so sensitive!"? No thanks.
It's become the Craig Owens show again, and the presence of Thomas Erak does little if anything to distract from his inability to carry the band. |

Norma Jean Wrongdoers | 4.0 |
Norma Jean's Wrongdoers takes all the band's best elements and fuses them into a cohesive and focused effort, and it pays off in dividends. While perhaps not their best effort, as it would be hard for them to touch Bless the Martyr... or O'God the Aftermath, their newest release sends a message that the band can still churn out pummeling and fantastic tunes even this late into their career. |

Death Grips DxDG | 3.0 |
For Today Prevailer | 1.5 |
this is seriously so terrible. everything here is absolutely ridden of rehashed and boring ideas. any fun and flair that they had on their first couple efforts is completely gone at this point, and now anytime they do actually deviate from those godforsaken chugs, the riffs just sound like other riffs they've already used on previous albums. and the acoustic is just embarrassing. maybe for today was never really a great group, they never did anything new, but dammit at least they had a certain entertaining spark to them. now it's just trite, annoying run-of-the-mill metalcore shit. |

Fallujah Nomadic | 4.5 |
Bring Me the Horizon Sempiternal | 3.0 |
So they dressed a bland metalcore sound in some ambience and electronics. Whoop-de-fucking-do. Kudos to them for trying something new, but there's a saying that applies to a situation such as this: You can dress a duck in a suit, but it's still a duck.
If it weren't for Oli's suddenly finding himself as a (pretty good) vocalist, this would be a 2.5. |
Bonobo The North Borders | 4.0 |
Nails Abandon All Life | 4.5 |
The Color Morale Know Hope | 3.0 |
An ever so slightly above average album marred by over reliance on breakdowns and an overall step down in musicianship from My Devil In Your Eyes. That being said, it's not as bad as I thought it would be, and the vocals are actually pretty decent once you get used to them. They bear a lot of similarities to Drew York, sometimes almost scarily so. The Color Morale haven't yet written a bad album per se, but now they're just a hair above their numerous peers, and if they aren't careful, they'll be just another core band. |
Kvelertak Meir | 3.5 |
The Story So Far What You Don't See | 4.0 |
I can't really decide if this is a 4 or a 4.5. Basically, this is still really, really fucking good, but it isn't USAD good. But really, who expected them to live up to such an outrageously great debut album? |
Barrow Though I'm Alone | 4.5 |
Senses Fail Renacer | 4.5 |
For better or worse, this is a Senses Fail we haven't yet seen. This is Senses Fail at their heaviest and most aggressive. Buddy Nielsen puts forth one of his most impressive vocal performances yet, spewing forth some damn surprising borderline growls. The musicianship has been upped as well, with a much more abrasive edge than before. In terms of quality, it might not necessarily be their best album, but it's definitely a refreshing change of pace for the group. rAlso, "Holy Mountain" is one of the best songs they've ever written. |

When you write something off as probably being bad or way overrated, it's sometimes hard to admit that you're wrong. Such a scenario is happening as we speak with me and Justin Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience.
I was fucking wrong, so wrong. In virtually every aspect, The 20/20 Experience delivers a pop album that has absolutely no right being this immediate, this enjoyable, and this goddamn smooth and sexy. Hyperbolic claims and long extended paragraphs about creative barriers being destroyed and the capacity of human intelligence aside, this album is beyond anything I anticipated. If nothing else, give it a chance, you just might find yourself in my postion; beyond surprised. |

"the fact this retarded statement has 16 bumps shows how retarded btbam fans really are, delusional fucks."rAnd "gay" having 23 bumps is somehow better? At least the other soundoff actually required thought and articulation. rThis album is easily the most cohesive thing they've ever written. There are still moments where they change it up seemingly for the sake of changing it up, but as a whole, everything flows together fairly well. Whether or not this matches up to Alaska and Colors, it's too early to tell, but rest assured that this far outshines The Great Misdirect and Hypersleep Dialogues |

If you look beyond the super edgy dick cover, there's actually an extremely good album. Harsh, dark beats and the divisive yells/raps of MC Ride twisting their way into your skull all the while. Not quite as harsh and abrasive as previous efforts, and not as many meme-worthy mantras to type in all caps, but believe me when I say this album still goes. r#NOIDED |

As I Lay Dying Awakened | 3.0 |
This or the Apocalypse Dead Years | 3.5 |
Some of the riffs on this are absolutely fantastic, however, I feel some of the genre cliches hold this back from being a really great release. |
Murder by Death Bitter Drink, Bitter Moon | 3.5 |
Ringo Deathstarr Mauve | 4.0 |
Grizzly Bear Shields | 3.0 |
Lindsey Stirling Lindsey Stirling | 3.5 |
Sorrow (UK) Art Is Dead | 4.0 |
The xx Coexist | 3.5 |
It's not near as immediate, and is still way overshadowed by their debut, but Coexist can grow on you if given the opportunity. |
Amanda Palmer Theatre Is Evil | 4.0 |
David Byrne and St. Vincent Love This Giant | 4.0 |
David Byrne and Annie Clark feed off of each other's creativity, throw in some infectious brass sections, and release an incredibly catchy and memorable album. |
The Amity Affliction Chasing Ghosts | 3.5 |
Like other people have already mentioned, this album has its stupendous moments where the passion they put into making this record bleeds through. But there are many other moments, particularly towards the end of the album, that are just bland and forgettable. rAlso of note is the increasing amount of breakdowns. While they were prevalent before, they stick out more on this album and are utilized to a much higher degree. rOverall, a great concept with a bit of lack in the execution department. |
Animal Collective Centipede Hz | 3.0 |
Moonjock is fucking awesome, and Today's Supernatural is pretty good too, but from there the album gets progressively more sloppy and less enjoyable. |
Propagandhi Failed States | 4.0 |
Deerhoof Breakup Song | 4.0 |
Skrillex Make It Bun Dem After Hours | 1.0 |
Minus the Bear Infinity Overhead | 3.5 |
Circa Survive Violent Waves | 4.0 |
Their most experimental and atmospheric album to date, Violent Waves is 55 minutes filled with spacey riffs, awesome bass lines and Anthony Green's trademark vocals soaring above it all. Definitely on par to be one of their best albums yet, and one of the better albums of the year so far. |
The Chariot One Wing | 4.5 |
If The Chariot's 2010 album Long Live is a tidal wave, consider 2012's One Wing to be a fucking tsunami. More varied, more experimental, more focused, and their most devastatingly powerful album yet. |
Wild Nothing Nocturne | 3.0 |
Swans The Seer | 5.0 |
I'm not going to bullshit you, this is album of the year. |
Darthy Mann I Hate It When My Internet Icon On My... | 1.0 |
Jessie Ware Devotion | 4.5 |
The Faceless Autotheism | 3.5 |
Ultimately, Autotheism is a record that just tries way too hard to be progressive. The Faceless should stick to their tech death style. |

The singles were fucking embarrassing. Album should be called Wasted Effort |
Woe, Is Me Number[s] (Deluxe) | 2.0 |
Bury Tomorrow The Union of Crowns | 3.0 |
Verse Bitter Clarity, Uncommon Grace | 3.5 |
Baroness Yellow and Green | 3.5 |
The Contortionist Intrinsic | 3.5 |
The Contortionist drop a lot of their core influences, and in doing so craft a very enticing album full of atmosphere and crushing heaviness they're known for. However, with each subsequent listen, the issues with the album become more apparent. While everything sounds nice, the transitions from heavy to soft and back again are quite awkward most times, and take away from what could have been an astounding album. As it stands now, it's merely an album with great heaviness and fantastic, spacey atmospheres with very poor transitioning in between. |

Periphery Periphery II: This Time It's Personal | 2.5 |
Has a few decent tracks and some cool moments, but this is way too fucking long and overbearing for its own good. Maybe if they trimmed it down to, I dunno, half the length, it wouldn't be such a chore to get through. |
Wolves at the Gate Captors | 2.5 |
Pretty bland and forgettable to be totally honest. Not sure what all the hype is about. |
The Word Alive Life Cycles | 2.5 |
It lacks some of the punch that Deceiver had. Lots of chugging, lots of generic breakdowns. There's the occasional moment where it shines, but all in all a pretty disappointing album. |
The Early November In Currents | 4.0 |
Absolutely gorgeous through and through |
Dads American Radass (This Is Important) | 4.5 |
The Elijah I Loved I Hated I Destroyed I Created | 3.5 |
Post-hardcore with a lot of post-rock influences. There are a lot of neat ideas here, but it drags towards the end, and there are quite a few moments that feel very samey. All in all, pretty good, and I look forward to hearing more from this group. |
Gojira L'Enfant Sauvage | 3.0 |
Memphis May Fire Challenger | 3.5 |
If you didn't like The Hollow, you won't like this. It is, in every aspect, The Hollow Part 2. Although in some parts the formula wears a little thin, they change it up just enough to prevent the album from slipping into dull monotony. rSimply put, it's nothing new, but still done well enough to be an entertaining listen. |
Agalloch Faustian Echoes | 3.5 |
DIIV Oshin | 4.0 |
A splendid album that is slightly held back by songs that begin to bleed together towards the end of the album. |

The Ghost Inside Get What You Give | 2.5 |
For every awesome moment, there is a dull, monotonous, and generic as fuck moment. Both album and band are vastly overrated. |

I could see people enjoying this, but a 5? Really?
Terrible EP is terrible. |

Fiona Apple The Idler Wheel... | 4.0 |
The last song is kind of annoying, but otherwise this is fantastic. |
Motion City Soundtrack Go | 3.0 |
It's still good, but it lacks some of the cooky charm the albums before it had. |
The Tallest Man on Earth There's No Leaving Now | 4.0 |
Rush Clockwork Angels | 4.0 |
Stepdad Wildlife Pop | 4.0 |
Right Away, Great Captain! The Church of the Good Thief | 4.5 |
Going into this with absolutely no expectations (not even knowing that this was an Andy Hull side project) was the best thing I could have done. A truly spectacular and grabbing slab of lo-fi acoustic greatness from a musician that never fails to impress. Will likely become a contender for AOTY. |
Kitty Ha Ha, I'm Sorry | 3.5 |
I was not expecting this to actually be good. but it is. Something about her flow is intriguing. |
Ne Obliviscaris Portal of I | 4.0 |
iamamiwhoami Kin | 4.0 |
Japandroids Celebration Rock | 3.0 |
It's just plain not as good as a lot of people on here would have you think. Sure, it has some great moments, but it's just too samey and repetitive to really go anywhere. |
Vampires Everywhere Hellbound And Heartless | 1.5 |
Be'lakor Of Breath and Bone | 4.0 |
Miss May I At Heart | 1.5 |
This is really, really terrible. Not that everybody didn't already know that. |

This album sets the bar for painfully predictable and boring. Stand Defiant was kind of cool though. |
