Obviously this album must've been underwhelming after the glorious, all-original A Hard Day's Night, but, at least amongst the originals, Beatles for Sale is a pretty good album. Baby's in Black, Every Little Thing, What You're Doing and Eight Days a Week are gorgeous, if very shallow, pop tunes, whilst I'll Follow the Sun, No Reply and I'm a Loser are songwriting breakthroughs backed by melodies a little different to what the audience was used to at the time. The rest of the album is unfortunately filler, but the covers of Rock & Roll Music and Words of Love are good. |
