Solid album but it is another overrated album by many in the sputnik community. It has a
nice atmosphere and a good flow, but it really doesn't excel at anything. The solos are
mediocre, the riffs are pretty good but nothing special, the drumming is fairly good as
well, but it isn't really progressive. However, I don't understand the complaints
about it being overly techy, it isn't. |

There are maybe 2 songs on here that are average for Insomnium and one, "While We Sleep",
which is good. The rest is certainly not up to par to their older stuff. This album is less
dynamic, less emotionally provocative, less interesting, and there isn't enough diversity.
The acoustic breaks are less prevalent here and the album suffers because of it. The build-
up to climaxes is nowhere near what it was on previous albums. Sure, they add blast-beats
but it doesn't add much musically other than it is different. The emphasis on clean vocals
reminds me of Noumena's direction, though with the same results: the band is no longer as
good. The only thing I like better is the addition of more solos, which are fantastic. This
album doesn't compare to their older stuff, and in my opinion, is definitely the worst thing
they have ever released, minus the EP last year. Saying this album is a classic, superb, or
even excellent is a stretch and unworthy of that sort of recognition. Insinuating that this
is as good as their other stuff is akin to saying Mercenary's latest is as well. It simply
isn't. It is still better than what most bands release however. |

Sukkonen's latest effort is the best melodic album of 2013. The ebbs and flows created by his songwriting; the strong vocal performance; the riffs, which are not only more interesting than other bands within the same genre, but convey a greater sense emotion than others; and the variation in tempo from song to song and within songs themselves, which lends a great deal to building climaxes for which Sukkonen is good at. At times you may hear an interesting solo or a nice instrumental passage. The drumming, though not stellar, suits the music well. This is one of the few records I have heard which comes close to Insomnium`s records. Again, my favorite melodic album of 2013. It topped the latest efforts from October Tide, Children of Bodom, Dark Tranquility, Amon Amarth, Amorphis, In Vain, Viikate, Eternal Tears of Sorrow, Omnium Gatherum, Noumena, Mercenary, Hypocrisy, Rotting Christ, Kalmah(only slightly), Arsis, and Soilwork. Yes, I listened to all of those records. |

Lindi Ortega Tin Star | 4.5 |
With a voice sounding like a mix of Harris and Parton this girl sounds awfully good, but that isn`t it, the music matches. Female artists have put out some great country albums this years--Rose, Monroe, and Musgraves to name a few, but Ortega`s is the best. |

Excellent songwriting against a backdrop of solid bluegrass instrumentation, plus Jackson`s smooth voice. It equals a great bluegrass album. |
Onslaught VI | 4.0 |
In a year with few solid thrash metal releases, this album was one. Fast-paced, quality riffage with a nice thick tone, tight drumming, face-melting solos, and solid songwriting define this record. It`s a nice addition to their discography. |

This album starts off with an absolutely crushing track but then dwells in inconsistency. There are some good things that they do on this but again, the inconsistency and ill-meshing of ideas lets it down. This album is more blackened-death then a straight up black metal record. |

A venture away from the black metal influence of their last album and back to their old straight up death metal ways. The production on this album is significantly better than the last and there is a melodic tinge to the guitar tone. Solid record. |

Best record they have released in a long time. I enjoy the darker tone of this album and less emphasis on guitar wankery. They focused on riffs and memorable songwriting. |

Dark Tranquillity Construct | 2.0 |
One of the worst records I have heard in 2013. These songs trudge along at mid-pace with few interesting riffs and melodies. This album lacks dynamism and the climax building that was more prevalent in their previous works. |
Spawn From Deceit Woven Promises - Unraveled Victims | 3.5 |
Blood Red Throne Blood Red Throne | 4.0 |
Great rebound album after a major disappointment in their last effort. I love the guitar tone on this album, it is thick and plain ol` sinister. The songwriting is great; the drumming is heavy on the double-bass; the bass is more prominent in this album; and the solos add character. |

Cerekloth In the Midst of Life We Are In Death | 3.5 |
These Danes produce mid-paced sinister sounding death metal. |
Deeds of Flesh Portals to Canaan | 3.0 |
Arsis Unwelcome | 4.0 |
Compared to most bands within the same genre, Arsis` musicianship is head and shoulders above. They wield their instruments with an uncanny technical prowess. These traits, combined with some of their best songwriting, best riff writing, the most interesting drumming to date, and face-melting solos is a concoction for an excellent record. Their second best full-length in my opinion. |
Amorphis Circle | 3.5 |
Another very good effort from a band of enviable consistency. The melodies on this record are beautiful and the variation from track to track keeps one interested. |
Starkill Fires of Life | 3.5 |
Sodom Epitome of Torture | 2.5 |
Rob Zombie Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor | 2.5 |
Jayke Orvis and the Broken Band Bless This Mess | 4.5 |
No filler tracks on this one, every song is very good. The songwriting is great; the instrumentation is interesting(not surprising seeing as Orvis was in the .357 String Band) with two great instrumental tracks; and an outlaw flair that should attract fans of Hank III. Oh, and one the better covers of Hank William`s classic in "Kaw-Liga". |
Noumena Death Walks With Me | 2.5 |
The over-abundance of clean sung vocals mixed with mediocre, mid-paced riffs haunts this album. |
Eyeconoclast Drones of the Awakening | 3.0 |
Saor Roots | 4.0 |
Verminous The Unholy Communion | 3.0 |
Purgatory (DE) DEATHKVLT - Grand Ancient Arts | 4.0 |
Very similar to Fleshcrawl, Vomitory, and Sulphur Aeon. Lots of very heavy tremolo picked riffs with vocals similar to Fleshcrawls. |

October Tide Tunnel of No Light | 3.0 |
For those not familiar(I`m sure there aren`t many), this sounds much like old Katatonia and they don`t lag behind far behind in terms of musicianship. Worth a listen if you enjoyed Katatonia`s older stuff. |
Hypocrisy End of Disclosure | 3.0 |
Kacey Musgraves Same Trailer Different Park | 3.0 |
Jungle Rot Terror Regime | 3.0 |
In Vain (NO) Aenigma | 3.5 |
Soilwork The Living Infinite | 4.0 |
After venturing further and further down a more rock orientated road, they return with an album closer to their first 3 releases. And seeing as they released a double-album, it was an inspired attempt. The result: one of the strongest melodic metal releases not only of their career but in all of 2013. The album is chalk full of interesting melodic riffs; varied vocals(highs and lows); variation in the songs, both in tempo and structure; and drumming that fits well. Certainly a record worth listening to. |

Rotting Christ Kata Ton Demona Eaftou | 3.5 |

Darkthrone The Underground Resistance | 4.0 |
Caitlin Rose The Stand In | 3.0 |
Omnium Gatherum Beyond | 3.5 |
One of the better melodic metal albums produced this year. Though the growls are below par, the music itself is quite good. These Finnish bands are very good in their ability to invoke emotional landscapes in the listeners head--taking one from the depths of sadness and despair to the triumphs of life and overcoming the negative. And sometimes it is physical landscapes which manifest themselves in one`s mind as well. When one listens to any number of Finnish melodic bands, I`m certain one`s mind leads them to cold and dreary, snow-filled surroundings. Omnium Gatherum is better than many other bands in the region at conveying this and this album highlights it. |
Eternal Tears of Sorrow Saivon Lapsi | 3.0 |
If you like keyboards to dictate melody in your metal you should enjoy this record. The intertwining of keyboard and guitar leads adds a nice element. |

Plaga Magia gwiezdnej entropii | 4.0 |
Excellent record. Similar to Mgla, this band writes some simple yet memorable riffs and this album is nothing short on atmosphere, which is dark. The atmosphere is aided by raw production but not of the lo-fi sort--everything is clearly discernible. The drumming is quite good as well but the bass is drowned out. Those Poles make some fine black metal. |
