When they push the envelope a bit their sound comes off unique and interesting. The change
ups work well, though I'd say the harsh vocals are sometimes overdone, mainly because when
they revert to verses with harsh vocals their sound comes across a little generic. Definitely
worth checking out though, as they incorporate a saxophone and keys throughout songs which
are sometimes subtle and other times central to the soundscape they are creating. "Trash
Island" is straight out hilly billy rock/metal (reminds me of Maylene and the Sons of
Disaster). The standout tracks for me are "Old Stories" and "The Projector". |

I am not a big fan of the power metal genre, and more checked it out for the progressive elements. There is a good range of vocals (for a variety of artists), and there are different musical influences throughout. However the Euro power metal dominates. No "bad" songs, but no real stand out songs for me. |

"Beyond the Pale" is decent track off this album, and definitely helped propel it up half a mark for me. The rest of the album is largely forgettable and a few songs are just plain right awful, "Behind a Mask" is a nice introspective song and shows Machine Head are getting better at writing the slower and softer songs. |
Machine Head Of Kingdom And Crown | 3.0 |
Not really any "bad" songs on this album, however no real stand outs for me either. A solid album without anything really ground-breaking (or should that be head banging?). I know a few aren't happy with the political views of Robb on this album, however I feel that it actually adds to this album where the music is largely what you'd expect from Machine Head (without exerting too much effort). After a few more listens I might up my rating, but unless a track really stands out for me on repeat, I don't see it being anything better than "good". |

A solid djent / ambient metal album that wouldn't be too bad having play in the background whilst you work, study or play around. Definitely lacking points of differences between the songs ... very much could play through as a single track. I personally like a bit more variety between songs, especially when they are instrumental as you need that point of difference to identify each one.rCould possibly rate higher after a few listens but nothing on this album really stood out to me on a first listen. Solid without really exploring their sound too much. |

This album was quite a pleasant surprise, pretty sure I read a review on AngryMetalGuy that made me want to check it out. A progressive metal concept album that largely has clean vocals but harsh vocals are thrown in there too (though not the best ... but passable). The standout track for me is "Seven". |

A prog metal sci-fi concept album, that largely delivers a great listen and interesting story. I was pleasantly surprised with this find. The standout track for me is "The Acid Lakes of Ganymede", it's been on high rotation since discovering it and with so many elements within the one track it keeps your interest after multiple listens. |

Very similar sound to Dream Theater in parts (a little less complex). Most of the sounds have good riffs and get you going, however there is nothing spectacular on the album. It is a very enjoyable listen and is a good solid album, without really being a stand out. No real poor songs on the album. |

"Loom" hooked me in straight away and really enjoyed every track on the album. The tracks all are around the 8 minute mark, but you don't really notice the length. There is enough variety across each track that it doesn't become monotonous (a bit of a trap maybe post bands fall into). The vocal interludes break up the largely instrumental based tracks nicely. "Loom" and "Sun" are the standout tracks for me. |

I find instrumental bands can be very hit or miss, this album is a HUGE miss. The muscianship is fine, however the song writer is drab to say the least and after a minute of listening to any of the songs you're done (the first four tracks could have been condensed down to a single 4 minute song and you wouldn't have missed anything). The songs also don't flow at all together (although only a few of the songs change up the tempo and rhythm) ... it's pretty much the same track over and over and over. Maybe if you like mediocre bands trying to replicate Animals As Leaders (poorly) and then they over indulge in their mediocrity check out this album. |
