| It's difficult to call Marrow Of The Spirit a wholly unique experience, and when compared to its attempt to incorporate multitude of influences, the final product comes up far short of expectations. The welcome addition of a sharper black metal edge is indeed a refreshing element, but unfortunately the creative fervor so present on Agalloch's previous releases is eerily absent. The riffs are stagnant; a fragment of the memorable melodies found on Pale Folklore or The Mantle. The classical guitar piece on "Black Lake Nidstang" is the only thing that even approaches unexpected in terms of the guitar department, the rest sort of holds back in humble restraint as the extracurricular inclusion of electronics, piano, cello, and nature samples drive the creative force of the album. Only a few simple guitar melodies on "Ghosts Of The Midwinter Fires" and "Black Lake Nidstang" and a handful of solos keep things afloat, as the overbearing and shameful nods at Godspeed You! Black Emperor in the closer "To Drown" reminds me of a mix between building post-rock epics and a bad Ridley Scott film. Couple that with an average vocal performance by Haughm, whose clean vocals appear momentarily in "The Watcher's Monolith" with a weakly performed verse (picked up only by the unexpected cries in "Black Lake Nidstang" that are reminiscent of depressive black metal) and whose rasps show little emotion, and you have an album that wastes incredible potential with recycled ideas masked by irregular shots at innovation and ingenuity. |

| Bathory is a band which really covers a broad spectrum of emotions. They have their Black Metal stuff, which is really gritty, raw, and battle-themed, and then they have albums like Twilight Of The Gods. Like more of a viking power metal sounding album, this one features insanely epic atmospheres, powerful riffs and clean vocals. Now, Quorthon is NOT a good vocalist when it comes down to his singing, and that is clearly apparent as soon as they come in. His singing is usually off key, overly cheesy, and his transitions from a high to low pitch is quite rocky and obviously troublesome. Putting that aside, though, we have a marvel of epic viking metal with some of the most insane guitar work ever to come from this band. Solos and grandiose riffs abound in this amazing spectacle of what instruments are capable of doing to human emotions, and where they are able to take us. |

| Belus is certainly not what I was expecting. On the one hand, we have the regressive nature of Vikernes as he sticks to murky, tremolo-picked riffs for a large portion of the album, and also utilizes a less-unique scream than what fans were used to on Hvis Lyset Tar Oss and the like. On the other, Belus shows the signs of over a decade of maturity, utilizing muffled clean vocals and a large heap of melody which is rather out-of-character for a Burzum release. The production, not surprisingly, hasn't evolved much from the likes of Burzum's releases in the early 1990's, but isn't inherently terrible or off-putting. Not a masterpiece in any sense, but then again not a complete failure, Belus closes the book on the mystery of where Vikernes' sound would go upon his release from prison. |

With We Are The Void, the concrete sound which Dark Tranquillity have kept since 2000's Haven begins to show slight cracks. While the toss-ups include a slew of guitar solos which are rather out-of-character for DT, they work in favor of keeping things different than what fans are used to. Also, the wonderful screams add a heap of emotion and the improved clean vocals of Stanne work wonders the few times they are implemented, and compliment the more depressed atmosphere with gratifying precision. Songs like the diverse and satisfying "Iridium" show just how much DT have experimented with their songwriting, often to great effect.
However, the opposite end of the spectrum poses a number of issues which DT have had lingering for quite some time, but always kept at bay with interesting riffs and solid musicianship and songwriting. The overbearing use of Martin Brandstrom's keys work wonders in some tracks, yet bore the listener to tears or even irritate in others. It goes without saying that the vast majority of the "melodic" part of their melodic death metal sound emanates from the synth, while the guitars concentrate on heavy chords to keep rhythm or provide rather interesting guitar solos, only periodically emerging to the forefront as the driving force of the music. The work of Henriksson and Sundin is vastly underwhelming, as the riffs of such tracks as "Lost To Apathy" or "Monochromatic Stains" are devoid from the album (let's not get into comparing the riffs here with the ones put forth on The Gallery, because I can assure you I will break into tears). Overall, though, this is another good DT release, nothing more, nothing less. |

| Definetly good, but I much perfer old Dark Tranquillity a la "The Gallery", "The Minds I" and "Skydancer/Of Chaos And Eternal Night". This album is nothing more than another solid release, if not a bit sub-par for their usual display of impressive songwriting and sheer emotion. Sure, there are tracks like the impressive "Lost To Apathy" or the modern "The New Build", but seriously, everything else sort of blends into something like a bunch of B-Sides off of "Damage Done". Each song melds into the previous one before doing much the same to the next track. The album is, instrumentally, solid, but in terms of genre overhauling (something DT is known for) this is pretty much a shot in the dark, and a complete miss. Well worth a listen, but keep in the back of your mind the fact that this band has done MUCH better things with their talents. |

| For all those who are sick and tired of *insert well-know metal band here* having so much hype for their new album *insert album name here* that turns out to be boring and disappointing, just listen to Paracletus, and you will know that the late months of 2010 are not all lost. Deathspell Omega have released here what is arguably the most focused and consistent album of their career, one that takes the ideas of the first two albums in their trilogy Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice and Fas - Ite, Maledicti, in Ignem Aeternum, sifts through them, and presents on Paracletus the very best of both worlds in a tidy 42 minutes. The mind-boggling technical guitar riffs work alongside slow melodies that aren't fruity and gay, but instead appeal to the album's distinct atmosphere. If you don't like Paracletus, then by all means return to the Marrow Of The Spirit circle jerk. You won't be missed over here, I can assure you that. |

| Let's start this off with a quick summation: there is exactly one memorable riff on this record and it occurs on the very first track. The rest of A Furrow Cut Short is lethargic and in dire need of some invigorating lift to bring the muddy, grey riffing back to life. It's a ceaseless dirge of cyclical guitar patterns and monochromatic moods that runs its course before the album escapes from its opener. The production is heavy and loud, swallowing the once-legendary bass lines Drudkh unleashed as recently as a few albums ago and opting to replace them with thundering drumming that envelop any attempt at dissidence to the one-dimensional songwriting. To put it in plain words, A Furrow Cut Short is Drudkh's worst album to date, supplanting even A Handful of Stars which, unlike the alarming display of stagnation here, at least attempted to try to achieve more than this...this...pure mediocrity. The only melancholy here is that instilled in the listener by the fact that Roman Saenko, who is capable of so, so much more, appears a fragment of his former self. |

The riffs are rcycles of tremolo picked notes that slide repeatedly up and down the fretboard without care or cauase, and rthe guitar solos that litter the run time only add the confusion. With a distinct lack of variety and precious few rmoments that rise above "decent", the vast majority of Handful Of Stars lies in a place that Drudkh really rhaven't been in their amazingly consistent career: mediocrity. |

| One listen to Ensiferum's new album "From Afar" and one thing is clearly apparent: this isn't the tentative Petri Lindroos who released the deceivingly comfortable album "Victory Songs" a few years ago. No, this is a new era for Ensiferum, a distinct sampling of their older material when Jari was around, yet undoubtedly an innovation in their sound. There are no more tracks which sound exactly like the one which preceded it. Instead, we are left with a daunting amalgam of folk metal compositions which simply work together like nothing since their self-titled album. From the absolutely brilliant and serene female vocals of "Twilight Tavern" to the extended, guitar-solo laden epics of "Heathen Throne" and "The Longest Journey (Heathen Throne Part II)" to the pure- Finnish interlude "Tumman Virran Taa", this is a career-defining album. Without a doubt one of the top 5 of 2009, this is exactly the album both Ensiferum and their fans were looking for; one hour of nothing but the highest-quality folk metal in the world. |

| Hanging Garden TEOTWAWKI | 3.0 |
| TEOTWAWKI, an acronym for "The End Of The World As We Know It", marks Finnish melodic death/doom band Hanging Garden's second full-length album. Following up 2007's Inherit The Eden, TEOTWAWKI is an album which only lives up to its superb predecessor in the instrumental department. Wonderful musicianship and songwriting are present at the core of the album, with the instrumentation seeping out of the walls. Hugely melodic guitar riffs and beautifully atmospheric acoustic movements drive the album in a brilliant manner. Sadly, the vocals threaten to ruin everything which the instruments bring to the table. Instead of the deep, doomy growls which you may remember from Inherit The Eden, we are instead treated to a forced, shout-like vocal display. While barely a scream at all, most of the vocals are a blemish on an otherwise perfect album, a disheartening downside to a release with so much promise. While there are moments where his much superior scream is present, it provides no excuse for the lackluster performance on most of the other tracks. Everything else is there, the atmosphere, the musicianship, the originality, the production. It's like that beautiful girl you met back in college with the hottest body you've ever seen in your life. However, upon approaching her she opens her mouth to reveal a set of rotted black teeth. Case in point, it's only good to admire from a distance, because if you linger too closely you are reminded why you stayed away in the first place. |

| A solid, one-dimensional record that is Heaven Shall Burn through and through, but little else. It lacks the unabashed riffage of their early era a la Whatever it May Take and also loses the visceral heaviness of their more recent material. What is left for Heaven Shall Burn is a highly streamlined, often cliche distillation of their own sound that is neither engaging nor very dynamic aside from a few outliers. There is little that deviates from what has become the norm - the same steady-state mindset that made Invictus so monumentally dull. It is still quality metalcore, and still carries their trademark political underpinnings, but the sincerity of their more notable works is eerily absent on Wanderer. With little fanfare yet notable length the album presses forth, forging little in the way of progress for a band that hasn't pushed the limits in 12 years. Fans of the band will find some moments to praise, but as a whole the album takes a seat firmly in the lower tier of Heaven Shall Burn's growing catalogue. |

| Fall Of Icons is not the album which Closure was hinting at. It is not a masterpiece and, to be honest, it is barely above-average. The tracks mash together in ways which almost strike away any unique features within them, and only during small moments of glory (for example, the clean vocals in "Condemned") does the album deliver on the lofty expectations set for it. The riffing is bland and all-too familiar, the variety in the vocals aren't used to their full potential, and the atmosphere isn't as profound as that of Closure. What promises were made with the massive success of Closure are strangely forgotten, and what we are left with is a lifeless shell of an album which lacks exactly what made Closure stand out from anything else in this genre: a soul. |

| A restrained, incohesive collection of tracks that, when added together, amount to very little indeed. There is little sincerity in the arching cleans as they reach high and dig down low, and there is scarce instrumental flair to catch your ear. It is a smattering of very safe songwriting wrapped in the guise of a well-produced, thoughtful record. Be assured, though, that The Fall of Hearts is deceptively simple; a facade of thoughtfulness that quickly collapses when looking for anything that truly has substance. |

The layout of the artwork and packaging is phenomenal - perhaps the greatest artwork of any Katatonia release - and the songs are crisp, evocative tunes ranging from the mellow (and I daresay genius) "Unfurl" to the more aggressive "Ashen", and everywhere in between. It shows evolution of sound in a very clear light, with the differences between years audible in the riffing and vocals. The best part is that these b-sides are all incredibly solid, efficient cuts that form a chronology of a band that has transitioned more in the past few years than many people realize, giving this limited-edition release more purpose than a record store day exclusive would lead you to believe. |

| It seems that Katatonia realized that maybe Night is the New Day was just a bit too bland to keep their sound going for an 11-track album, so they went ahead and fixed that. On Dead End Kings, we have the same eleven tracks, but we also have substance that was nowhere near present on their previous effort. Vocals that are dialed in and on-point, riffing that is still minimalist but makes itself more flowing, running with the vocal melodies while still retaining a sense of individuality. Electric guitar solos to harmonious bridges to subtle, simple clean riffs, there is something tangible here that Katatonia have not displayed for quite some time. It is a clash of serenity and brutality, with the guitar solo in "Leech" showing a side that the thunderous chords of "Dead Letters" would not reveal. The stellar production that was placed on Night is the New Day is back, and this time even better given the fact that it has more to work with and so many different shades to accentuate. It is likely that the more this spins, the better it will get, so don't be surprised to see yourself becoming more and more enthralled. |

| For those who know Moonsorrow, Varjoina Kuljemme Kuolleiden Maassa won't be too much of a surprise, simply because it doesn't change a whole lot from Moonsorrow's already firmly established style. Even though the band have left the notion of Vikings behind in favor of a post-apocalyptic theme that was also present on V: Havitetty, their core sound remains the same. For those who have always disliked Moonsorrow, their opinions will not be swayed, and purists who cage themselves in the realm of only the most "serious" black metal business need not apply either, lest they wish to senselessly vent their anger. For those who want an engaging folk black metal record that is not only solid in its composition and execution but also a hell of a good time to listen to, Varjoina Kuljemme Kuolleiden Maassa provides that and more. Ville Sorvali's vocals are as sharp as ever, the song structures continue to pile riff after riff into an increasingly epic mountain, and the overall theme of the album is unwavering throughout. Take all that and wrap it in an excellent production that incorporates the bass well in the mix and drops the keyboards back so they contribute wonderfully to the atmosphere without strangling you with their oppressiveness and you have an album that knows what it wants to do and gets it done, a trait Moonsorrow have displayed for many years. |

| A Nest of Ravens... is an album that is at its best when it strays away from the rather progressive atmospheric black metal dirges that it stubbornly insists on dragging on. The band is talented and has vision, but clearly has some issues in crafting an identity based on those aspirations, instead opting to break more frequently into dreary, tiresome heaviness that permeates the album's core. Things become truly interesting, though, when Obsidian Tongue slow things down and become deliberate, because in these moments the weary tremolos fade and become displaced by massive atmospheres. The title track is the prime example of this breakthrough, because through the use of extremely simple melody and masterful pacing the track rises into a marvelous beast of its own. Driven by John Haughm's session vocals, the track shows what Obsidian Tongue have hidden beneath the cliches and the lack of true identity in a scene that is almost entirely dependent upon creativity in order to thrive. Build on that, and Obsidian Tongue are a force to be reckoned with. |

| It's certainly a shame that a band with such talent as Norway's Ragnarok goes completely under the radar. They bring a fresh, more modern and sophisticated sense to the older style of pure, raw Black Metal. With their album Diabolical Age, Ragnarok take the raw ferocity of early '90's Norwegian Black Metal and work in some sweet melodies and atmospheric touches. Whether it's with keyboards or the guitars, there is always something of interest going on. In a day and age where Black Metal bands are a dime a dozen, it's nice to see one of these relatively unknown bands put out something as good as this. Whether it's with the pummeling intricacy of "Heart Of Satan", the sheer energy of "It's War", or the mesmerizing, breathtaking keyboard harmonies of "Diabolical Age", Ragnarok give me a breath of fresh air in a scene full of look (and sound) alike bands. | Swallow the Sun have a recent tendency to sandwich weak vocal melodies in between even weaker guitar melodies, and while When a Shadow... does momentarily break from this trend, things remain more or less on auto-pilot for the core sound of these venerable Finns as they have for almost 10 years now. Fleeting moments like the soaring latter half of "The Crimson Crown" or the screams of "Here on the Black Earth" that lead into an out-of-character guitar solo are understandably the most interesting moments of an otherwise one-dimensional plod through droning clean singing wading in a slurry of riffs that hardly ever make themselves known. The album's mood is utterly bleak not only in its solemn atmosphere but in its striking refusal to do anything at all that is interesting. |

| "Circadian Rhythm" is an album which encompasses all that can be great about atmospheric metal. It flawlessly combines elements of avant-garde, death metal, and atmospheric black metal to create a near masterpiece which leaves a lasting impression. The album is melodic while incorporating the harshness of black metal and the brutality of death metal, but at the same time is incredibly progressive in nature. It incorporates syths and clean vocals, as well as the relatively frequent time signature changes and abnormal song structures to create a sound which is truly unclassifiable. The only really effective way of describing it is original. It is not an album you've heard before, and in a time when almost every metal album is a re-hash of old ideas, I think that originality means everything, and Thurisaz's "Circadian Rhythm" is the most refreshingly original album I have heard in years. |

| With As The Stars, Australia's Woods of Desolation continue to stage a departure from their debut LP Toward The Depths, but as with Torn Beyond Reason that isn't necessarily a bad thing. This album continues on that stylistic road, while imparting a more hopeful, optimistic mood than its predecessor. It's not upbeat to point of daftness like, say, Deafheaven, and it's not as fundamentally sterile as they are either. The production is rough and raw, yet the music surprisingly melodic through the tremolo-laden whir that the mix allows to come forth. It may be a bit too brazen for those who didn't like the direction taken on Torn Beyond Reason, but then again it may also sway some naysayers of that album with its refreshing change in attitude. Woods of Desolation are running that fine line between raw black metal and this new monstrosity of so-called "post black metal", but thankfully things err on the side of the former. |
