J Dilla Donuts | 4.5 |
Donuts will put you in a good mood no matter who you are. J Dilla, bedridden with his health deteriorating, spent the last period of his life making these beats, which speaks volumes about how much he loved music. And, his passion comes out in many of these songs, resulting in an immense amount of fun and beauty. This album can remind a person why they love music. Obviously, Dilla was trying to bust out all of the tracks he possibly could because this album would be his final statement in the world, so the 31 song length is reasonable. However, there are a number of boring throwaway tracks. There is quite a bit of 5/5 material on here, but the filler brings down the rating a bit. |

Maps and Atlases You and Me and the Mountain | 4.0 |
Maps & Atlases decided to approach songwriting in a different manner than on their previous EP, incorporating their stunning technical talent more subtly into songs with catchier vocal harmonies. The resulting EP is an improvement on "Tree, Swallows, Houses," containing some of the most infectious songs of 2008. Now, how about they stop teasing us and release an LP? |
