Passion Pit Kindred
From the ashes of the emotionally combustive Gossamer rises it's tame predecessor. Kindred shares Gossamer's synth driven, hook-laden spirit, but the lyrics are less interesting and there really isn't any experimentation. It's the most straightforward pop album Passion Pit has released to date, and even though it has a handful of infectious tracks (Lifted Up/1985 is ridiculously fun), it is ultimately just a sugary sweet release held together by minimal substance.

The Wombats Glitterbug
This is basically the definition of soulless indie-pop. These dudes just sort of churn one song
out after another - every single one takes a slightly different approach on the same electronic
backbeat, with sparkling guitars and high pitched vocals in nearly every chorus. There's some
catchy moments to be found here and there I suppose, but it's still a relatively easy album to
take a pass on.

The Mountain Goats Beat the Champ
The slower moments here carry all of the album's weight. 'Heel Turn 2' and 'Hair Match' are must-rhear indie-folk songs this year. There's a lot of standard Mountain Goat stuff going on here with rthe occasional ascension into something spectacular. A worthwhile listen for any fan of this rband, even if it proves that they'll never get rolling on all cylinders and craft another rmasterpiece like The Sunset Tree.

Lord Huron Strange Trails
Album tells an interesting story, set to densely atmospheric folk. It gets better and better as it goes on, but as a whole it lacks variation - especially in the vocals. From Frozen Pines on is basically pure bliss, if you're looking to find the album's sweet spot.

  • beachdude I just got into Bleachers after you called Walk the Moon a "weaker Bleachers" and I'm glad I did! It's a great record. I think if you like the Bleachers album you'll dig the new Walk the Moon, although not on the same level.

  • VicariousIntent With all due respect my friend, how in the world does Beat The Champ prove that TMG will never craft another Sunset Tree? (which is to say they haven't already)
