Naw. After multiple listens, I can only attribute these high ratings to delusional fandom. I
loved The Wild Hunt. This album is a far cry from the originality of Matsson's previous,
with bland instrumentality for the most part. "Leading Me Now," "Little Brother" and
"Criminals" stand out as nostalgic whiffs of his past melodic creativity in what is
otherwise a long strand of exchangeable if light finger picking listlessness. Matsson's
lyrics, however, are as sharp as always; but they don't pack nearly as many punches as in
his debut, not only because he keeps his volume and pitch relatively conservative, but also
because his melodies pretty much do nothing to underscore the content of his lyrics. That
said, if this is could be considered TTMOE's slump, I expect great things from him in the
future.

Matsson trades in the intimate rawness of his previous efforts for a more lush instrumental approach, losing a little of his charm in the process. The songwriting is much the same, but due to the instrumentation, don't sound as interesting or captivating. It is by no means a poor album, perhaps not even a misstep; I just hope that he can inject as much vitality into these other instruments as he does his acoustic guitar in the future.
