I bought this album in a haze of good reviews. But to me, this album just wasn't what I expected. It wasn't the Power Metal I thought I was going to get - there isn't a lot of power.
Although there are a few decent tracks, this album was a bit of a disappointment. Maybe I haven't listened to it enough, but I'm not entirely sure I want to tread it's depths to find out.

It is very rare to find post-'90s power metal albums that are so good but then again Angra is not your typical power metal act, as evident even from the band's debut. Temple of Shadows still includes all the elements that made Angra a sensation such as the brilliant guitar work, the exotic touches that have their roots in the Brazilians' heritage and the progressive tendencies. However, this LP is a bit heavier than their '90s work and the vocals - that may bring Bruce Dickinson to one's mind - are of course not as strong as Andre Matos'. Nevertheless, Temple of Shadows contains interesting ideas which are well executed and result in a very strong offering which feels shorter than it actually is.

More character. More Skill. More maturity. More everything; the album is a superb piece of power metal that is far better than the average. Kiko Loureiro in particular is a fantastic guitarist and arguably the highlight of the record; his solos are technical but always have rhythm and groove to go with it.

A power metal gem! Best Angra album! Full of great power metal songs like "Spread your fire", "temple of the hate", "waiting silence", "No pain for the dead","wishing well" and "wings of destination"....

As far as power metal goes, this is as close to perfect as it gets. Only problem is that it begins to run out of steam after the Centerpiece "Shadow Hunter." The first half of the album is unreal though.

Angra are fantastic when they stick to their mildly progressive power metal formula, and there's no denying they are technical masters. Drummer Aquiles Priester, particularly, is peerless in the genre.
My first impulse was to give Temple of Shadows a 4.5 out of respect for its driving first half and the majestic centerpiece The Shadow Hunter, but the second half of the album, bloated with symphonic ambitions, makes it too awkward a listen.
While their arrangements are excellent, and some people will certainly be entranced by each individual track, there's only so many times you can use keyboard strings for dramatic effect before the average listener gets jaded.
