Sonic Youths Daydream Nation is a very frustrating and discouraging listen. There are some mindblowingly good songs like "Teenage Riot" "Erics Trip" and "Rain King" yet the album drags on for such a long time. Sonic Youth are at their best when they play direct, to the point rock songs and don't screw around with delay or lengthy blasts of noise; "The Sprawl" and "Hyperstation" never seem to come to an end and a lot of these tracks could have easily been shortened. While I think that Daydream Nation is a worthwhile listen because of its standout tracks the album is very draggy and to long for its own good.

The ultimate, the king of distortion, 'Daydream Nation' is beautiful as it is brilliant. To really describe the merits of this LP is harder than it seems at first, because really what makes it so essential is well, how fucking weird it really is. On first listen it may seem harsh, if a bit unfocused -- SY's vocals are less than entrancing and they spend a lot of time jamming out their distortion. This, unappealing as it may seem, is where the brilliance lies -- amongst these rough, chaotic lead voices lies the cries of a generation, on the verge of what they know is not a bright future. Sonic Youth detest the commercial world of double speak, but they understand that it's inevitable, and maybe, preferred. Beyond the phenomenal writing, lies the song structure, the composition -- it's amazing. There's no wasted note, no stray bit of distortion, everything has it's place, it's purpose there. This is why the distortion works, why, 'Daydream Nation' is a success. To encompass the full effect, full result of this album in words is futile, there's not enough time. I bought it when I was 14, and it changed the way I listen to music.

The obvious choice for a favorite Sonic Youth album, and for good reason. It borrows elements from its runner-ups - the artsy dissonance of EVOL and the catchier punk-leanings of Sister - and combines them into a major work, something too massive to ignore or pass off as gimmicky, without giving up all those trademark alternate tunings. It is a long but immensely rewarding listen, and always a pleasure to put on.

What truly makes Daydream Nation so awesome and as iconic as it has become is just how "raw" it is. Its feedback, its drones, Thurston Moore's voice-cracks, the alternate tunings; its imperfections are what make it so unique. An incredibly influential record that is very near and dear to me. 9.4/10

Listening to Daydream Nation all the way through is like falling into a long dream. You fall asleep to the jangly guitars and soft whispers of Kim Gordon at the beginning of Teen Age Riot and wake up at the final grinding notes of Eliminator Jr. During this time, you escape from reality completely. Unaware of anything else, Sonic Youth is able to suck someone up and keep them in their musical landscape for an extended period of time. This is why it is my favorite album.

Noise, Noise, and some more Noise all put together in a meaningful fashion. Quiet, Loud, Quiet, Loud. All the extremes are on here. From when Thurston starts singing on "Teenage Riot" to the aggressiveness on Silver Rocket that will be right here on the album. That awesome guitar riff in "Total Trash" that leads into a crazy guitar work for the last two minutes. To the odd "Providence" with beautiful piano, seeming like its from a war movie. Just let this album sync in!

It's not THAT goddamn noisy. Or frustrating. Just a brilliant record that's like a Sgt. Pepper with distortion and more influence from Dinosaur Jr than from LSD. A must-own for everyone, and while it isn't for everybody, it's an album that every music fan should experience. Whether or not you'll experience it like I did, I don't know.

My favorite album of all time. That being said, to say that Daydream Nation is 'flawless' is arguable. But what makes this messy, distorted monster so great is its flaws: every Thurston Moore voice crack, every one of Kim's growls, every overbearing guitar drone. Every moment on Daydream Nation is raw, unlike anything before it.

Ugly and beautiful at the same time. Daydream Nation will lull you into a sense of comfort before unleashing chaotic walls of sound and feedback. Very melancholic and strange. Teen Age Riot is the best song on here but every track here could be considered a highlight.

Being an avid fan of these musical renegades, I'm happy to report Daydream Nation as the band's most singular, focused and coherent work. This album takes the noisy, breathtaking brilliance of their earlier work and refines it into what remains their most even release to this day. Yes, this is a very long album (especially for SY) and yes, they ramble and wander at times, but never past the point of no return. If you immerse yourself in the atmosphere and let SY take you where they will, the end result is worth the wait, producing track after track of mind-blowing material.

Daydream Nation is one of the greatest pieces of music ever created. Not for it's amazing musical quality, but the lyrics and the intricate design of each song is what makes it stand out in the crowd. Coming from Sonic Youth, you know it's going to be weird, but this is them at their finest.

At first I was debating on whether I should give this album a five or a 4.5. So I went back and gave it a few more listens and figured that it wasn't worhty of being called a classic (imo). While, this album has some mind blowing songs on it such as "Teen Age Riot" and "Total Trash", it also has a few songs that I felt dragged on a little too much and got some what repetitive.
