One of the most epic records ever. Quite possibly surpassing that of Agaetis Byjrun, Kid A, Still Life, in the court of the Crimson King, Marrow of the Spirit, GSYBE etc etc. Minor deduction is the rhythm guitars a bit too high in the mix, slightly drowning out the subtleties of the violins and the guitar solos.

There's just a little too much going on. While the ideas are fantastic, very few of them are presented in a subtle way.

Portal of I is full of experimentation - the range of influences presented work more often than not. Xenoflux nails their sound superbly; if a song gives you chills upon first listen you're doing something right. There are a few other moments like that on the album - just about as many as there are wtf moments, though. A few times the clean vocals sound completely superfluous and are atmosphere killers, a couple leads come in abruptly, and one time there's a long drawn out low growl that sounds like the dude is taking an immense shit in the toilet.
Overall, Ne Obliviscaris is a great example of a band that is greater than the sum of its parts. All are skilled at what they do and they have created an album that was mostly worth the wait. There is a general flow to the album, however, it's a shame some songs are somewhat ruined by vocal or instrumental misplacement.

Boosted this up to a 5 because ever since I started listening to this something hit me and I have literally been listening to this for 2 months straight. This album is perfect in my eyes. A weird way to put it, this album gives me the same feeling I get inside when I first played Kingdom Hearts, my favorite game of all time. Pure bliss and euphoria.

Far too repetitive. Generic extreme metal with hints of prog. Nothing special to see here. By Sputnik standards, I consider this album overrated.

2012 was definitely a great year for Progressive Metal in General and Portal of I is no exception. Its like an actually good modern Opeth except combined with crazier world music influences. No doubt this album contains some of the best use of flutes, Violins, and clean singing I've ever had the pleasure of hearing on a metal album. Best songs: And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope, Of the Leper Butterflies, and As the Icicles fall.

I can't think about any other Black/Death metal record that competes Portal of I in terms of richness and variety of sound. With increasement of song length comes the quality: you have to make it interesting to avoid repeats and boredom.rPut a combination of extreme+clean vocals, heavy guitars, drums + violin on top of that, and you have a brilliant album in the end.

It's a incredible showing of the bands potential despite feeling bloated at times with many unneccessary sections. Although the violin player here is a surprise standout.

This album slays, but it does have one flaw. While the music is awesome and the musicians are talented, there's a lack of a sense of cohesion through the aural journey the album provides, something far too prevalent in progressive and technical metals today. But this album only teeters towards it instead of jumping right into it like generic wanky tech death/prog metal band #143, which is the slight fault in an otherwise fantastic album.

Definitely some fresh and new progressive blackened death metal. It holds such a powerful but beautiful sound to it that it ends up being a good finished product, just the powerful sound can almost be a little too much occasionally.
|4.5 superb||Psykryph | November 9th 13|
While I agree with reviewers who say there seems to be a little too much going on in this album, without trying to be condescending, I must say that it takes a trained ear that enjoys complexity to really get this album. I heard these guys live and they sound amazing but more dynamic than on the recorded album.
While NeO's wide range of influences may turn off some listeners who do not appreciate the experimentation or idiots whose musical taste live by the retarded phrase "less is more", I find it utterly refreshing. It is definitely not an album that can be fully absorbed in only one listen. With each repeated listen, you appreciate the layering more and hear more in the music.
|3.5 great||Travis Montgomery | June 25th 13|
On one hand very good; cohesive and very well executed. On the other hand kind of a disappointment; more of the same progressive death that's been becoming more common, without any real evolution. With all the hype this was getting, I was kind of expecting a bit more. 3.7/5

Tragically imbalanced songwriting and over ambition befall any redeeming moments this progressive black metal album has to offer. The musical skill is all there but at the end of the day nothing on Portal Of I sticks, resulting in an effort that sounds wonderful, but lacks any kind of personality. Nonetheless, Ne Obliviscaris are a band to keep an eye on if nothing else.
|4.5 superb||Michael Snoxall | December 29th 12|
After years of waiting, Ne Obliviscaris released their debut album. Despite three of the seven tracks being re-recorded demo tracks, the album still holds up fantastically. The re-recorded tracks seem to have detracted in quality slightly due to a lacklustre production, but the four new tracks are beautiful. Ne Obliviscaris show that their songwriting is still strong, if a little muddled.

The fact that Ne Obliviscaris managed to make a 70 minute full-length album that never sounds too over indulgent is quite a feat. Especially for this type of music.

There are many good things about 'Portal of I'. It is an example of how to be creative in a genre (extreme rMetal) which is often limited by an excessive focus on riffs and needing to be 'heavy'. Yet it can still provide rthe 'heavy', with excellent harsh vocals and an extremely focussed drum performance. The problem is that the rband hasn't yet harnessed or refined their creativity: many of the songs feel disjointed. There are many rexcellent passages, but these come randomly; indeed, the best parts of the album, the ends of 'Tapestry of rthe Starless Abstract' and 'Forget Not', are where there is a clear direction or journey towards the final, rfantastic passage. The disjointed nature of the songs hurts their flow, making them feel incomplete, even if rthey have excellent parts within. The other issue is the clean vocals aren't good enough to provide the depth rand melody they intend to add, limiting the potential of lots of the album. Add to this an extremely large ralbum length, which makes the album susceptible to being repetitive, and you have many problems which rcannot be overcome, despite the excellent songwriting and genius which this band does genuinely possess. I rlook forward to hearing more from them in the future, when the songwriting is refined.
|4.5 superb||tom6 | September 6th 12|
Ne Obliviscaris make their influences quite clear from the get go - their sound owes everything to the likes of Skyclad, Agalloch, Dan Swano, early Opeth. Like many of its references, Portal of I can be blindingly aggressive or lush at a moment's notice. Tinges of black metal are readily detectable. But their sense of melody and progression is absolutely their own; every track unfolds without a hiccup and offers plenty of interesting ideas and riffs. The album is a triumph of tasteful, majestic songwriting unbound by any formula.
|5.0 classic||Dancore ELITIST | July 9th 12|
Never have beauty and technicality been so flawlessly intertwined. Portal of I has got to be the album of the year up to this point.
|0.0 ||ASnideRemark | June 16th 12|
With a willingness to experiment and convey multiple ideas, Ne Obliviscaris is a powerful record that juxtaposes many different styles with multiple other influences. The problem that continues to resurface repeatedly is that too many ideas are being placed at work here, and thus it takes away from the strong musicianship because it's all over the place. Also for what it's trying to do, the harsh vocals are a little standard.
|4.5 superb||Apoc | June 2nd 12|

This could easily be a 5 if the songs weren't so fucking
long! The words "over-blown" and "pretentious" come
to mind when I think about the wankery and self
masturbating of the instruments on almost every song.
Despite the albums few negatives, the band does a
great job of making blackened, progessive death metal
worth listening to. The constant changing from clean,
to black, to death metal vocals is done beautifully.
