Meshuggah attempted to create an organic album and they have succeeded. Koloss sounds like
it came from the heart of an ancient temple at the depths of a dark jungle. This album
proves that Meshuggah are an ancient alien species whose only purpose is to mindfuck the
human race.

While not totally living up to the hype or previous releases, Koloss is a true Meshuggah album, and a true Meshuggah album is always a great album.

I wasn't the biggest fan of Obzen so this is a pleasant surprise. Here on Koloss Meshuggah have tempered their technical grove with a more natural less cluttered production creating an album that still sounds just like what one would expect from an album by the Swedish metal juggernaut, but is just a hair less demanding of a listen. Koloss doesn't dethrone Destroy Erase Improve and Catch Thirty-Three as my favorites but it still rips just as hard.

Koloss combines the pound and power of Nothing with the immersive soundscapes of Chaosphere and it works. Koloss also fails to demonstrate anything radically new for this band, at a time when djent is exploding aimlessly, and it stagnates. The music is all good, but at the same time I think we were all expecting a little more.

This is the best album in a long while, pretty consistent overall, and it's certainly leagues ahead of ObZen. "The Demon's Name Is Surveillance" may be my favorite single song since Stengah. Really digging everything about this album.

Meshuggah has very quickly become one of my favorite bands with their intricate, grinding rhythms; quirky jazz leads; odd, but thought provoking lyrics. I love this band. This album is their best to date.

While it may not be the most impressive release of their career, Meshuggah gives another consistent effort with "Koloss," their latest studio effort. This record is full of the usual stuff we are so used to with this band, like the awesomely heavy riffs, lots of technical instrumentation, and of course the dark lyrics that you get with a Meshuggah record. The only thing I felt this record fell on its ass on was its guitar solos (Devil's Name is still up there for worst solo of the year) and like of trying anything new. Overall, still a great releases by one of the most consistent metal bands around.
