| 1.5 very poor | Nick Butler STAFF | June 27th 06 | Green Day's next album is going to be very interesting. They basically have two options. The first is to return to what they're good at, which is mindless, adolescent pop music with loud guitars. The second is to continue in the corner they've backed themselves into and try to deliver another 'political' record, and find themselves an anachronism in a world that's fast getting sick of shallow, hollow anti-Bush sentiments with no real message behind them. The former will make them more money, but it'll reveal American Idiot for the sham of an album it was. The latter will kill off their career, because that bandwagon got old about 18 months ago. So what is it, guys? Pride or money?

| 3.5 great | Steerpike | June 30th 06 | Green Day are getting a lot of flack lately. Terms like "sellouts" and "bandwagon jumpers" are being tossed around more than condoms at a coed frat party. All because of American Idiot. Though hardly their best album, it is still entertaining, and the concept isn't nearly as political as people seem to believe it is. American Idiot is a hook-filled, catchy, sing-along pop-punk album with a slightly different approach to songwriting than on the band's previous albums, as well as the same sort of snide social commentary they've built their whole careers on. Take it for what it is: a good album that's been unnecessarily demonized because of the oversaturation on the radio.

| 4.0 excellent | Dave Donnelly STAFF | September 26th 06 | With American Idiot, Green Day have added their name to a very short list of pop artists who've had the balls to attempt, and actually succeed, in writing a genuinely engaging concept record- and the music isn't bad either.
The story of St. Jimmy isn't particularly elaborate or original- and is confusingly cut up by thinly veiled political taunts- but its simplicity is part of its charm. Mostly, Green Day play up to the typical suburbanite underclass- troubled pot-smoking teens with eyeliner- but the music is pure pop from a punk perspective.
'American Idiot' and 'Holiday' may represent the least subtle form of propaganda since Mussolini died, but Billie Joe's keen sense of melody and memorable lyrics could make them highlights of any pop calendar, while the nine-minute (I won't say 'epic') epic (sorry) 'Jesus of Suburbia' offers more of the same in five distinct but wonderfully assembled movements.
Elsewhere, 'Whatsername' and 'St. Jimmy' stand up to anything in the Green Day catalogue- just don't mention the word 'punk.'

| 0.0 | Adam Knott STAFF | May 15th 10 | This rating is a strange one. I don't listen to American Idiot; I don't even have it on my computer. But when it was released it was arguably the most powerful cultural influence of the year, taking the mainstream to rock (not punk) and invigorating malleable teens to support their political stances. Whatever you think about this album - and I can't claim I know it well enough to dissect it - it's so controversial that it gradually became one of the 21st Century's most relevant albums. That doesn't make it good, but the fact that even its detractors care about it proves that it is at the very least phenomenally relevant. Rock albums should split opinion, inspire some to dance, some to riot and some to revolt, so hats off, Green Day; poppy as this record may be at points, it changed a musical landscape, if only for a short time. Now you just need to realise that repeating this spectacle was never, ever a good idea.

| 3.5 great | Hep Kat | June 30th 06 | There's nothing wrong with American Idiot. Nothing at all. Forget that it's a "rock opera," forget its political aspirations, forget all of its success: at the core, American Idiot is a fun, catchy pop-punk album. With the exception of the lackluster final leg, the entire record is very pleasing. Sure, you've heard "American Idiot," "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," and all those other tracks on the radio (constantly), but, for what they are, they're good songs. I really can’t see why anyone would dislike this album, when it’s really quite entertaining.

| 1.0 awful | Zachary Powell | September 25th 06 | I don't know what went more wrong for this band. The fact that their 3478948 singles were not only widly played on the radio accross the U.S. and everywhere, but that they were no good to begin with. Way over-commercialized (which kinda killed the point) and without much displayed musical talent; Green Day appears to have "grown up" but there sure are a legion of people who would wish them some form of devolution

| 4.0 excellent | Adam Downer STAFF | April 9th 07 | To be quite honest, this album wasn't terrible. I listened to this album when American Idiot was the only single, and to be honest, I loved the album after that. I got sick of Boulevard like the rest of you, but for the love of God, the unwarranted flack this album carries along with it. It's rarely political, there's a loose storyline, but most importantly the songs are good. Letterbomb, Homecoming, Whatsername, and the title track each stand out as very good songs. While it may not be complicated, as it stands, which is an album of punky pop songs, it serves it's purpose perfectly.

| 5.0 classic | barosjn | June 27th 06 | When Dookie exploded into the 90's, Green Day invented pop punk. Afterwards, they were famous for songs like "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" and "Minority", but their later albums never had the success that Dookie brought them... until American Idiot came along. This is an interesting concept album about the political society of America and the story is told well with the pop punk Green Day was so famous for inventing. Sure, this album might have gained six overplayed singles (the title track, "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", "Holiday", "Wake Me Up When September Ends", "Jesus of Suburbia", and "Give Me Novacaine") and the band topped the charts again just because going emo is the current fad, but if you avoid those facts you have a spectacular punk rock concept album for your listening pleasure.

| 3.0 good | The Katz brothers EMERITUS | June 23rd 06 | With Idiot Green Day manage to pull three things, they alienate old fans, gain thousands of new ones and make some of the most radio ready pop punk tunes ever. Tracks like Homecoming and Give me Novacaine make up for some of the garbage on the record, but can not salvage the fact that it has one of the lowest replay values of any album. The singles, peppered through out the album recieved so much play that it is now almost impossible for me to listen to it in whole. Plus some songs just suck.

| 1.0 awful | mrfudgeyhead | April 8th 07 | I dont know why this cd got so much love, personally(now publically) i hate Greenday, they cant play and the singer sucks. The lyrics try to hard to be clever and have deep political meaning, but if i wanted to hear liberal opinion i could watch the daily show with john stewart and laugh at with his jokes. Instead these douchebags are being praised as original and reckless. If you belive that these idiots are original or good at their job then you are an american idiot.

| 0.0 | SowingSeason STAFF | May 5th 10 | Say what you will, but American Idiot is a landmark album for both Green Day and the punk genre. Sure, this album may be the farthest thing from what Green Day set out to be in the early 90's, but it is nevertheless a triumphant rock opera that succeeds on its ability to captivate listeners with catchy hooks and political (albiet annoying to some) themes. While controversial, American Idiot stands as one of the biggest albums from the early 2000's.

| 1.5 very poor | John Legendary User Hanson STAFF | June 26th 06 | In all honesty, I don't really have many reasons to back up my 1.5 Rating, obviously, every time you have a 1 or 1.5, it means you have a particular distaste for an album, but I honestly can't get past how unoriginal this album sounds. It's like Green Day wanted to pretend they were making musical progress, so they just took a bunch of things they did in the past, took some ideas from better bands, and threw it all together. The thing is, it only really works on Jesus of Surburbia. Yeah, kind of a shitty situation overall.

| 3.5 great | Chas | June 21st 06 | Almost timeless pop punk rockers Green day returned to form after a hiatus with their new and controversial concept album, American Idiot. Green day have set off on a different note to their last previous albums with what they consider a more "mature" sound. Billie Joes' lyrics throughout the album portray this grown up sound as well as story line. The story, a young bored disillusioned suburban boy who leaves his life for an adventure in what seems to be the bright lights of a city. When he arrives he meets various characters and has some enlightening complications. But as the album progresses he finds it not what its cracked up to be and leaves in a torrent of fury. American Idiot is fast, up beat, with a hint of political message (hence the controversy) and could be not what old Green day fans expect. Although the album is worth a shot, buy it, you could be surprised.

| 4.5 superb | xusurper | July 23rd 12 | A rock opera done right; many of these songs are the best of their career. The archetypal plot of the Jesus of Suburbia, St. Jimmy and Whatsername is enigmatic enough to keep the album interesting. Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Are We The Waiting and September Ends are great ballads, while rockers like Jesus of Suburbia, Holiday, and Homecoming show the band's trademark ability to write memorable hits based on 4 power chords or less.

| 2.5 average | Dead Star | August 7th 06 | I actually thought this record wasn't all that bad as everyone makes it out to be, I maybe even think to myself I rated it a little too low. Green Day have approached a new era in their career and good luck to them, they don't choose the fans they get, so I really see all this Green Day hating as a bit misled. Green Day haven't sold out, if they did, it was on Dookie.
I'd prefer to have money and be recognised worldwide, than to be a nobody.

| 3.5 great | snowy630 | June 27th 06 | During American Idiots' immediate time in the sun, I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. However, with the benefit of hindsight, I can now see that it's not as good as I thought. It's not that there aren't great songs on the cd, because there are, it's just the "social" issues if you will that detract from the records' magic. It feels now that now Green Day has "all of a sudden" become this massive mainstream worldwide phenomenon (not that they weren't before - remember Dookie?!) image conformity, and the tapping into of the emo market has somewhat destroyed some of the love I had for the band (Warning was fantastic). Green Day need a smart move with their next recording, ie. go back to being a fun band.

| 3.5 great | Robby Roark (The Sludge) | June 24th 06 | Once you thought that this aging Berkley trio has faded into pop punk history with the experimental Warning album, they are back with a completly "Queer Eyed" makeover on their 7th studio effort in 2005 with American Idiot. Its hard to say what hasn't already been said in 8 reviews, but it has its up and downs. The social politics and pop radio overload can throw even the most hardcore Green Day fan off, but there is alot to be had here. A storyline is relevent to the entire concept album. The title track, St. Jimmy and Holiday keep the same Green Day feel to the song structures while tracks like Give Me Novicane, Wake Me Up When September Ends, and Whatsername give a mellow look at the album. Sure it hasnt covered new ground that hasn't been consistanly been covered before, but its a breath of fresh air to anyone who would give it a fighting chance.

| 5.0 classic | alextheantichrist | July 16th 12 | Whether you loved this album or hated it, Green Day was definetly taking a risk knowing that either fans are going to worship the album as one of there greatest records or the possiblity that fans will be completely ashamed of it. Personally, Green Day's American Idiot was worth the risk. Many people say that American Idiot is overrated but oddly enough, it's sort of underrated even if the Album is focused on a mainstream audience. With the album being resurrected onto a broadway musical in 2010-present and winning awards for it, American Idiot Continues to be relevant. The sound of American Idiot is very unique with the influences such as the Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Clash, Bob Dylan and Queen. American has inspired other bands to follow the Punk Rock Opera; bands like My Chemical Romance's The Black Parade. American Idiot also features a plot about kids being impacted by the post-9/11 world that we live in and that I find pretty deep. I have to say that there is not a single song on this album that i didn't like. I loved every single song on this record especially the singles that have been presented to the media. Overall, The album does justice and proves to be one of my favorite punk records of all time.

It harbours multiple captivating tracks which vary from short, energetic cuts such as She's A Rebel to 9-minute long epics like Jesus Of Suburbia and Homecoming. The brilliance in Billie Joe Armstrong's lyricism and his ability to bring about haunting melodies and captivating hooks is truly shown in the album, as every song leaves the listener with different perspectives and views into the epic story that Green Day has created. The story of the Jesus Of Suburbia is a story that everyone should hear.

| 3.5 great | Lambda | November 10th 09 | Many seem to hate this album, mainly because of the so-called 'forced politicial-ness' of it. I, however, find no problem with this, and in fact I think in some cases it makes the record more interesting. While Green Day may not be the most informed when it comes to politics, I applaud them for attempting something different, as opposed to the usual derivative pop-punk album. In fact, some of the songs on here aren't half-bad. 'Boulevard Of Broken Dreams' is one of the best pop-punk songs I've heard in a while, 'Give Me Novocaine' is an underrated rocker, and 'Whatsername' is a solid closer with some effectively used layered vocals. Of course, there are some annoying tracks: 'Holiday' immediately comes to mind as being one of the most irritating tracks of the last ten years. Other duds, such as the boring 'Are We The Waiting' and the uninteresting 'St. Jimmy', do nothing to add to the album but merely take away from its score. The big talking points of the album are the two nine minute songs: 'Jesus Of Suburbia' and 'Homecoming', respectively. The former is fairly interesting, with an intricate structure and many different parts. 'Homecoming' is the stronger of the two, which features Tre Cool singing for one of the few comic relief moments on the album. This album is a strong pop-punk album, whose pros outweigh its cons, and while some may disagree with me, that's fine- all I ask it that you listen to this with an open mind.

| 1.0 awful | Rodrigo | October 9th 09 | This utter piece of crap has the biggest identity crisis ever. Is it punk? Is it rock? Is it pop? Let me clarify this for you, Green Day: It's neither. The instrumental work is underwhelming. The lyrics... ugh, they just took advantage of a time when it was trendy to bitch about politics. And not the punk way, noooooo. Green Day thought it would be better to use the "Bono-bitching-method". I really can't stress enough how overrated and crappy this is. And if you know American Idiot isn't a great album, but it holds sentimental value so it will always be your classic album even though you rate 21st Century Breakdown a 5 as well... well, there's something really wrong with you.

| 4.0 excellent | Kyle Hallman | May 12th 09 | American Idiot is one of the albums almost every teenager owns, it boasts 6 full singles (all successful) plenty of pop rock anthems and ballads strewn about it. It is also vaguely a concept album detailing a story following 3 characters. The album stood out alot in the year of 2004 and 2005.
The album is very good, the idea in retrospect seems like it would be a mess, interconnected songs, political centered lyrics and a concept route the album took. It sounds like it would be a massive mess, however it all worked perfectly, everything about it is pretty damn good. On top of that, its all very catchy and the ballads like Boulevard of Broken dreams and when semptember ends are both great.
However one problem this album has is that its been ridiculously overplayed to the point of "I want to stab people who play it" for sometime you couldnt turn on a contemporary music station on your radio without hearing one of this albums several singles. Which made it grow old quickly, but its still a good album.

It's nice that they're getting a second wind and another shot at the spotlight, but they're in their thirties, they need to be prancing around in makeup like little emo wimps. If they keep going like this, I'm sad to say this may be the last album I buy from the boys.

| 0.0 | The Nu-Spawn | June 27th 06 | I can see how people would hate American Idiot, people bitch and moan when a pop-punk band like Green Day writing style matures, but if it means more fans, do it, run with it while you're still popular. This is Green Day's time to be in the limelight, they've been a band long enough, they deserve it.

| 3.0 good | Jacob6293 | June 27th 06 | This band used to be a chart-topping pop-punk group with poppier, immature songs. Now they're just 'okay' with this recent album. I guess they have moved on to more mature and meaningful songs. Oh well, they were great when they were still more punk. But it is a good album, I must admit.
