| 4.5 superb | Justin Woodmancy | September 29th 12 | It just chugs along so damn heavily. Like a freight train carrying weed and death traveling 15mph.

| 0.0 | Eli Kleman STAFF | March 26th 12 | The album?s title (translation: ?The Mysteries of the Worm,?) is a nod to a fictional grimoire conceived by the late, great Psycho author Robert Bloch in 1935 and later incorporated into horror master H.P. Lovecraft?s renowned Cthulu Mythos. ?It?s a concept record, a little bit,? Pike offers. ?I got this idea about Jesus Christ and the Immaculate Conception: What if Jesus had a twin who died at birth to give Jesus his life? And then what if the twin became a time traveler right then? He lives his life only going forward until he finds this scroll from an ancient Chinese alchemist who derived a serum out of the black lotus?which is actually in Robert E. Howard?s ?Conan? stories?and then he starts traveling back in time. He can see the past through his ancestors? eyes, but his enemies can kill him if they kill the ancestor that he?s seeing through at the time. Basically, he keeps waking up in other people?s bodies at bad times. It?s kinda like that old TV show Quantum Leap. Kurt actually pointed that out to me after I told him the idea. But whatever?time travel is a killer concept.?
You've got to be fucking kidding me...

| 3.5 great | Eric Greenman | November 25th 12 | 2012 has just been one of those years where I have been dying for something heavy, and "De Vermis Mysteriis" has been a great help for that. The sludge metal genre has been getting more progressive (Mastodon), so it was great to hear that High on Fire stayed to their sludge metal ways on their latest release. The album is full of great solos, heavy breakdowns, phenomenal musicianship, dense vocals, and even a few heavy ballads (King of Days). However, this album was lacking in more than one department. The biggest problems I have with this record is the lack of diversity, no standout tracks, and really nothing overly interesting in this record. Overall, a great metal release with a few flaws in a year that has been pretty poor for metal.

| 4.5 superb | Galwanzie | July 4th 12 | Reason why this album is Superb? Total in your face agression ripping apart asfalt with your bare hands! but still melodic, one of the most melodic releases High on Fire has had so far. And as far as the mixing goes Kurt Ballou(Converge) has done an amazing job. really capturing the overall RAWNESS of this band.
Drumming: INSANE! Some of the fills on this LP are Apsolute Face melting.
Guitars: Heavy as ***, but also melodic as well. Just one killer riff after another, and the solo's are realy great too(Madness of an Architect).
Bass: Brutal, Fuzzed out and saturated. (String Slapping in mix)
Vocals: Like i said previously, Very agressive, In your face, But sometimes Melodic witch realy suit the songs in a wierd way(Opening track).
Only thing i can pick on this album that is not that good is you hear the strings of the Bass slapping against the neck, but i think it just adds to the overall rawness of this album.
Tracks that really stood out for me:
Bloody Knuckles: HUGE RIFF!
Madness of an Architect.
Fertile Green:...Totaly Decapitating!
King Of days: Amazing Vocals
Warhorn.
The album even has a Beautiful Melodic, instrumental Interlude (Samsara).

| 4.0 excellent | ManintheBox | June 19th 12 | This release right here is an insanley strong 4, in fact the quality is like a 4.5, I just don't listen to it as much as my other 4.5s. This is definitley high on fire at their loudest and most pissed off. Just jam to Bloody Nuckles or Romulas and Remus. That being said amazing tracks like Samsara and King of Days add a nice extra dimension to all the fast pased stoner riffs.

| 4.0 excellent | superbeeron | April 18th 12 | A retreat from the more slick sound of Snakes of the Divine, High on Fire return to more monolithic roots. Thick and dense sounding instrumentation. While constantly powerful throughout with its straight forward 'balls to the walls' approach theres enough variation (Warhorn, King of days) to keep things from ever sounding monotonous. A well rounded and excellent release

| 4.5 superb | That Black Guy | April 15th 12 | I prematurely rated this a 4.5 after only listening to it once. After a few more listens, this is still worth a 4.5. This blows most of their other stuff out of the water. Not saying that their older music is bad, this is just so much better. Just about every song on here is good in comparison to Death is This Communion and Snakes for the Divine which had a few good songs and a lot of filler. I definitely recommend this for those who were disappointed by the lack of heaviness in Mastodon's The Hunter since this is very similar to an old Mastodon record. Standouts: Madness of an Architect, Romulus and Remus, and Bloody Knuckles.
