Apparently this is the first criminally under-reported album of 2012. Queen of the Wave is a densely-layered, retro campy, kaleidoscopic pop/rock/electronic record. I don't think it's possible to attach just one genre to the music since it refuses to stay in one place for more than a couple minutes. I understand the lukewarm praise of the little press coverage I have seen - there is A LOT to wrap one's mind around in only 48 minutes - but that's what keeps me coming back. It's a giant, neon, 3-D puzzle of a recording to piece together one track at a time.
A really cool album, but it's just not working its magic on me. Musically, the album is very impressive, and the production is close to perfect. For me though, a lot of it comes off as way too cheesy, especially in the vocal department. I enjoy listening to this, especially the first two tracks, but in the end, I'm just not in love with it. Maybe I need some LSD or something, but to me this album is just alright.
