| 2.5 average | Deviant STAFF | January 25th 12 | After listening to Born To Die I'm convinced of the fact that Lana Del Ray has had the misfortune of being born in the wrong era. This button-down, middle of America repression that she spends far too much time indulging in would have made far more sense served up in the chic glamor of the '50s, a time that Lana oh-so-obviously longs for with her penchant for wallowing in the footsteps of the ghosts that stalk the Hollywood hills.
It's this obsession that ultimately derails her debut LP, where the kitsch and the quirk stumble far beyond being simply cute and instead aches with the wide-eyed pillow talk of a woman who never really bothered to grow up. And if that's the point, then I just don't see the pay off.

| 0.0 | Adam Thomas EMERITUS | January 25th 12 | Lana Del Rey has never presented herself (as far as I've seen) as anything other than what we all know she is, a skin deep mishmash of intersecting trends and her full length continues to be par for the course. I'm not trying to be a contrarian gnashing at the wheels of the hype machine that seems to have steamrolled its way into every corner of the entertainment universe, I'm just calling it as I see it. She writes background music with lyrics that can either be taken as either adorably kitsch or laughably shallow depending on your mindset. To be honest that's my biggest criticism of Born To Die, it's 50 minutes of emptiness. Sure there's sound, but it's of no consequence at all.

| 3.5 great | Conrad Tao EMERITUS | January 25th 12 | Lana Del Rey's whiskey-soaked, tear-stained "debut" LP is shallow, excessive, poorly prioritized, slightly scattershot, and occasionally imbued with some inspired artistic gusto. That is, Born To Die is quintessentially American, and all the better for it.

| 1.5 very poor | Fluorine | January 24th 12 | Lana del Rey has neither the chops nor creativity to make a whole album. Lana credits herself as a writer, but honestly the writing here is a mess, and her vocals became grating rather soon.
This comes from a fan of previous singles Blue Jeans, Born to Die, & Video Games.

| 4.5 superb | Davey Boy STAFF | October 14th 12 | Under the pseudonym of Lana Del Rey, 25 year-old Elizabeth Grant makes a huge impact on her heavily hyped LP 'Born To Die'. Owning an alluring lower register, the dramatic singer-songwriter finds a captivating middle ground between modern & retro, as samples add a hip-hop flavor, while string arrangements give off a lush & cinematic baroque vibe. Both accessible & unique, the album may be front-loaded & contain some dubious lyrics, but it's just best to ignore the flaws & hype, and allow yourself to be drawn in by this magnetically sensual New Yorker. Recommended Tracks: Off To The Races, Born To Die, Video Games, National Anthem & Radio.

| 4.0 excellent | Adeem | January 31st 12 | If I had to choose an album to beat off to, it would probably be this one. Instead of delving into Lana's lyrics in search of emotional authenticity, just think with your genitals for once and enjoy the music.

| 2.5 average | Major Tom | January 27th 12 | The singles, which are front loaded, make for a strong enough start before the remainder (and majority) of the cuts stretch out the kitsch and retro-modernism to breaking (boring) point. By the time you hit the halfway point, Lana's voice is less cute and more samey; the music continually devoid of hooks; and her debut left an average reminder of how a desire for fame, and a particular route towards it, cannot be sustained by a couple of good tunes and rouged red lips.

| 3.5 great | iGuter | January 13th 13 | ADELE may have range and fire in her voice, but Lana Del Rey has a style that's classy and original. She proves her chops and is a well proclaimed gangster Nancy Sinatra. It may not be perfect, but it sure as hell is deep enough to synpathize with.

| 0.0 | log0fan1 | November 14th 12 | Lana Del Rey is a femme fatale with a smoky voice, a languorous image, and a modeling contract. Not coincidentally, she didn't lack for attention leading up to the release of her Interscope debut, Born to Die. The hype began in mid-2011 with a stunning song and video for "Video Games," and it kept on rising, right up to her January 2012 performance on Saturday Night Live (making her the first artist since Natalie Imbruglia in 1998 to perform on SNL without an album available). Although it's easy to see the reasons why Del Rey got her contract, it's also easy to hear: her songwriting skills and her bewitching voice. "Video Games" is a beautiful song, calling to mind Fiona Apple and Anna Calvi as she recounts another variation on the age-old trope of female-as-sex-object. Her vacant, tired reading of the song rescues it from any hint of exploitation, making it a winner. Unfortunately, the only problem with Born to Die is a big one. There is a chasm that separates "Video Games" from the other material and performances on the album, which aims for exactly the same target -- sultry, sexy, wasted -- but with none of the same lyrical grace, emotional power, or sympathetic productions. Del Rey doesn't mind taking chances, varying her vocalizing and delivery, toying with her lines and reaching for cinematic flourishes ("he loves me with every beat of his cocaine heart," "Pabst Blue Ribbon on ice"), and even attempting to rap. But she's unable to consistently sell herself as a heartbreaker, and most of the songs here sound like cobbled retreads of "Video Games." An intriguing start, but Del Rey is going to have to hit the books if she wants to stay as successful as her career promised early on.

| 3.5 great | sundayswithsierra | February 13th 12 | After Lana Del Rey’s infamous Saturday Night Life performance, many were skeptical of her new album Born to Die. However, they fail to realize that they are in fact missing out on a great album. Her music is like an old Hollywood film: slow, steady, and classic. Del Rey wrote all the songs herself and the album is peppered with great lines that are full of imagery and spunk. The fun beats combined with her unique voice brings something new that is truly unlike any other performer. She calls herself a “gangster Nancy Sinatra” and that comparison fits perfectly. Of course, all albums have their faults. Del Rey sometimes uses trite statements in her songs like “roll like a rolling stone” and “two for the money/ three for the show” which appears to be a cover-up for lack of creativity. “National Anthem” and “Carmen” also miss the mark compared to the other songs on the album, but should be appreciated. If you enjoy something new, but something old as well, then you will enjoy Lana’s album immensely.
