Very often, critical reaction to an album differs wildly from the reactions of fans or the consumer public. Decemberunderground presents such a case, as many fans have either embraced wholly or brashly rejected the latest turn in AFI's ever-sophisticating studio career. Though considerably poppier than even the group's early horror-punk showings, Decemberunderground builds on the increasingly complex and colourful arrangements the group seemed to have perfected on Sing the Sorrow.
There's a strong New Order-like undercurrent running through much of the album, and the brighter, more assured sound is not altogether unlike the aforementioned took after the demise of the gloomy Joy Division. 'Miss Murder' is an unabashed pop song, jumping straight into the chorus and showing notable sonic similarities to Green Day's 'Holiday,' while the electronically-inclined 'Love Like Winter' is a contender for single of the year. 'Kill Caustic' and 'Kiss And Control' hark back to the band's hardcore days, but Decemberunderground is undoubtedly a step away from where the band was a decade ago and, whether a good or bad decision, it's definitely a challenging album for those who choose to embrace it.

In effect, Decemberunderground is Sing The Sorrow, Pt. 2. This is a continuation of the direction they'd begun to travel in. "Prelude 12/21" even kicks off the record with the same kind of atmospheric wall of drums and backing vocals that "Miseria Cantare" provided, before "Kill Caustic" flies out of the traps. Their love of pop hooks finds a logical end in "Miss Murder" too, which almost sounds like an A.F.I. remix of "Peaches" by The Stranglers. This opening trilogy is undoubtedly the high point of the album. Electronic swirls permeate the remainder of the album, just as they did for much of Sing The Sorrow.
The problem is that the rest is hugely inferior to everything on Sing The Sorrow. Nothing catches the ear. It all plods along in a basically pleasant, yet boring 80s-synth-pop kind of way. It's certainly AFI's weakest 'mainstream' record (Black Sails In The Sunset onwards), and it only betters their very early hardcore outings because there are actually two good songs here.
AFI fans who haven't been short-sighted and weak enough to call them 'sell-outs' will probably enjoy this. But as far as everyone else is concerned, this is to be avoided.

The most underrated album in their discography. I have played this CD literally over 1,000 times and I know every lyric to every song. The album still brings me great comfort in times of sorrow.

This album has great screaming and clear vocals and is the best album I have bought for a long time. There is so much variety on the album. The track 'Prelude 12/21' is so different to 'Affliction' as just one example. To me, the best song is 'Endlessly She Said'

This seems to be a completely Love/Hate record. I read articles in magazines how much this album rules. And how much it sucks. Similar here on Sputnik. I am more on the negative side. There are nice songs, and you can tell that they wanted to push the direction of "Sing the Sorrow", but somewhat failed during the process. Which results in the feeling to have a rip-off here. The songs just don't get me the way "Sing the Sorrow" did. Which is sad actually, as I really like that album

Blech. DU represents AFI taking the artistically crafted alt-rock they had begun to expose with Sing the Sorrow, and choking it to death. If you're over the age of thirteen, you won't enjoy it that much.

I decided that AFI's measuring stick in the album cycle from 'The Art of Drowning' to 'DecemberUnderground' is 'Sing the Sorrow'. Therefore, no matter how much of a game changer DU was per say (new heights in mainstream success with "Miss Murder" and major developments in their sound ala "Love Like Winter") it was not as stellar as STS and therefore cannot be rated a 5.

Not a big fan of "core" amd emo music. But AFi takes me doen to memory lane with Miss murder. So, I though about giving this album a try and founs it quite enjoyanle. Every track has its an awesome part. The bassline is praiseworthy.

Absurdly catchy, pop hook-heavy rock record. Lots of fun tracks ("Summer Shudder," "Love Like Winter," "37mm"), but that's about all this is, really - catchy, well-produced, and a bit brainless. I think there's some sort of narrative attempting to be weaved, but it doesn't really work. Recommended for a jaunt, but listeners intent on intellectual stimulation should look elsewhere.

This is a turning point for AFI complete with a radical change in sound that fans either loved or hated. They toned down their dark emo punk sound and in turn showed lots of industrial pop influence, complete with keyboards and beats that would make South Park's Goth Kids shuffle their feet. This approach allowed the band to craft slow building verses that explode into memorable sing along choruses. The lyrics reflect the dark moodiness of the album, which is best listened to from start to finish. It can be a little cheesy and overblown at times, but the strength of the songwriting makes this much more than a novelty album.

I understand A.F.I. is an ever evolving band. For that I will always give them respect and the courtesy to appreciate what they record even if I do not like it. This is a perfect example of that. There were only a few songs on here that I listen too, ever. Decemberunderground just didn't move me...

Unfortunately, I'd never heard of AFI until DecemberUnderground came out, but upon hearing it, it's definately reeled me in and coaxed me to listen to AFI's earlier music, which I love just as much!
Prelude 12/21 certainly got me interested to keep the album on, it just sounded so pretty and.. twinkly. (For lack of a better word) And from that song, I couldn't stop listening once I'd been thrown in as 'Kill Caustic' started.
This is defo's an album I can listen on repeat for a few times before I turn it off; my personal favourites are 'Miss Murder', 'Kiss and Control' and 'Endlessly, She said'

Personally, though the album has a few standout tracks (maybe 2 or 3) nothing is outrageously good about the album, it's an obvious departure from their past work, and its good at times, and also bad at times. So, i give it a 3 because its pretty much all good, but just nothing amazing.

This is a great album by afi, i personally think that sing the sorrow is a better one, but i still like this one a lot. I think all their songs were made in such a great that only afi can make them. This is a great album, miss murder, love like winter, and prelude 12/21 are just a few of the amazing songs on this album.

I'm a major fan of AFI and this album was a major disappointment. AFI has constantly been changing their sound and style, from their early straight-forward written, angry punk lyrics to their dark poetic era with Black Sails, until their more mainstream yet still very good album Sing The Sorrow. But with decemberunderground, it seems they sold out. My main beef is they went REALLY soft and poppy with some songs, while others were mostly screamo - which is so conformist these days. But besides that, the biggest problem is the LYRICS. The lyrics are HORRIBLE compared to their older albums. Some good songs are 37mm and Affliction, to me.

This is my least favorite AFI album to date. The main things that made this album decent was the fact that Davey found out what he can really do with his voice and Miss Murder. Most of the songs are here are usually repetitive and unimpressive, but there are a few songs worth listening to the whole way through. (Miss Murder, Summer Shrudder, Kill Caustic, Kiss & Control and Endlessly, She Said)

AFI have finally made their bad album. Previously, everything they've done has been great, or at least good, but on Decemberunderground they falter a bit. Taking the poppier direction of Sing The Sorrow a little bit too far, Decemberunderground is filled with songs that sound like they could be hits, but they're missing the one thing the public wants: a catchy chorus.

I didn't hear any AFI material before this but this album is completely enjoyable with some very catchy yet goth punk (not exactly a very common combo). In fact the tracks that sound like "The Killers" only slightly darker are the best. A killer opening to dance tunes like Miss Murder to more emotional songs like Summer Shudder and Love like Winter, it also grows on you the more you listen to it. The only song I felt was out of place was Kill Caustic and the album could have done without it IMO

Decemberunderground was gloriously glorious. AFI just hit the bulls eye. It's got beautifully constructed and intertwined lyrics and melodies. Even if, unfortunately. MTV realized this too, and decided to suck some of thier glory away, they make up for it.

Having been very used to lots of AFI (I own all their recorded history including demos and rearities) I was disappointed with the direction they took. Its not fast, not in your face but very dull boring and plain. Its a much darker less care free look on music differing from previous releases. For those of you who are fans of AFI this might not be up your street, becuase it'll just disappoint you to be brutally honest.
