Revives the obvious tongue-in-cheek element present on Heavy Is a Really Heavy Thing, but the songwriting is uninspired and it's evident Devin's heart isn't in SYL at this point. It's not really heavy, it's not really funny, it's just sort of... there.

The Frank Zappa of extreme metal and his minions deliver a crushing, but also melodic album in The New Black. There are certain portions of this record which can become repetitive and there aren't any insane tracks like "Oh My Fucking God", but this recording as a whole leaves somewhat of a lasting impression even if you're not a fan of Devin Townsend's works.

Another really cool album from Strapping Young Lad. The New Black is at its best when the songs are extremely fast, but the more melodic portions are good as well.

Not SYL's strongest, that would have to be City, but it has a bit of a progressive tinge found more blatantly on his solo work. It is without a doubt still a metal album first and foremost, but it might be a lighter introduction than the face-melting blitzkrieg of the aforementioned. 3.9/t

"Decimator," "Wrong Side," "Monument," and "Almost Again" are some of my favorite songs, but then utterly forgettable tracks like "Anti Product" and "Hope" (how does that song go again?) really drag it down. Oh well, onto the next Devin Townsend release..

interesting......
i'm not too big on the whole death metal thing, but this album had some nice touches, and some interesting stuff.......plus, they're decent musicians.
and any album that has a song featuring guest vocals by oderus urungus can't be all bad....
