Quality song writing just took a back seat. All the basic elements are there including an incredibly unessacary amount of guitar wankery. It's Megadeth at its simplist, and bland form. It works but is far from exciting. 'Endgame' showed something of the right direction, however this strays far from that path.

Guys, if it was supposed to sound like Endgame then it would say Endgame on the cover. Get over it, this is an amazing record. And to all of you who rate this below a 3.5: you're either deaf or a cynical asshole.

The most varied Megadeth album ever, everything from Killing is my business... to Endgame is represented here in top form, not their heaviest nor fastest album but probably one of their greatest.

Edit - my first impressions of this were really negative, but it's grown on me a bit... 13
suffers from many of the same problems as Endgame. It feels like Dave is half-heartedly
trying to imitate the classic sound while writing in the same style he has since the band
reformed. And there's plenty of solid tracks but none of them are particularly great or
memorable. Only this time there are a couple of bombs mixed in there too (Deadly Nightshade,
Whose Life is it Anyways).
I recommend We The People, Fast Lane, and New World Order.

As a person who liked albums from the band past 1994 such as Cryptic Writings, The System Has Failed, & Endgame, I must say this album is extremely disappointing when you factor in Dave Mustaine is capable of writing better material than a bunch of songs filled with the generic modern metal verse, chorus, solo, repeat formula. Black Swan, the best song on here, is just "okay". It is safe to assume that any future Megadeth releases from now will be as boring as this album. The band is done.

This is actually a very solid album. rIt starts in classic 'Deth fashion with the bouncing and heavy riffing Sudden Death which features snarling Mustaine vocals and excellent dual guitar solos of Mustaine and Broderick. Public enemy Number 1 is another superb song which sounds very catchy and reminds me of Youthanasia/Cryptic Writings. Apart from a couple of mediocre songs the rest is brilliant. Never Dead is a very simple yet head-jarring song while We The People harks back to Countdown to Extinction. New World Order features a fantastic, thrashing riff at the end, Black Swan has a lovely intro solo and a classic chorus while 13 is a fantastic and eerie song about Dave's life. This is an excellent album and the plus point is that it has all sounds ranging from Rust in Peace/Peace Sells esque thrashers to melodic Cryptic Writing style songs.r

What is the problem with you guys? The album is just perfect. I mean did you bother to listen to it 4-5 times? There is nothing wrong with it. There some very strong songs in it and no fillers at all. Whats not to like? Sudden death? Neverdead? Deadly Nightshade? Lets see you compose this kind of songs. Personally I believe Dave knows exactly what he wants and this album is up there with Countdown and Peace Sells. Rust in Peace is still better. awesome stuff . i give it a 5

If you're looking for thrashy Megadeth, please look away. It's like Dave tried to please every fan of every different style Megadeth has ever done, and it comes across as somewhat of a hot mess. There are some great parts on here, but it's going to be largely forgettable.

I find this cd kind of meh overall. The songs aren't particularly memorable and the album as a whole adds nothing noteworthy to the catalogue to merit spending 20 or so dollars on the cd. Actually I find the cd rather tedious after the first few tracks...wish I would have heard more songs before picking it up.

An okay Megadeth album. There are some good songs like Sudden Death and We the People. However, the music and lyrics aren't the best the band has put out. Dave's playing is still good, but the rest of the members turn in somewhat pedestrian performances. And it might just be me, but some of the lyrics could have been better. I put it at the same level as The System Has Failed. Decent, but not as good as their first 4 albums.

Seems that the lack of Sneap has let Dave have a mid-life crisis on a couple of tracks. Never Dead, Deadly Nightshade, New World Order, Fast Lane, Black Swan, and a few moments on Public Enemy are fun, catchy and thrashy, but some songs here are either familiar returns or dull.

Not as epic or in-your-face as Endgame was, and some tracks feel reminescent of thier Risk and Cryptic Writings era, but this is still a very solid album. Mustaine still knows how to kick ass.

This is standard Megadeth, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The problem here, though, is that they are just too comfortable. This is a good record, it's just not up to par with the expectations that naturally come with a band as exceptional as this.
Just keep listening to Endgame, it's this plus so much more.

The album kicks major ass....!! Awesome vocals....awesome guitar riffs...solos....and fantastic production. Much better than the last two albums. U can actually feel Shawn playing drums in all the songs. And there are no fillers at all....unlike Endgame and UA.

Disappointing, because I loved Endgame. There aren't any bad songs on here, but unfortunately there is also a lack of anything memorable. The song that comes closest is the title track, but even it could have been much better.

"Thirteen" could also be called "Cryptic Writings 2". I'm a huge fan of Cryptic Writings, so it's naturally a welcome step for me. Unlike Endgame, which was way too consistent and simply modern thrash, Thirteen incorporates three styles, thrash metal, heavy metal and hard rock. Except one mediocre song ("Guns, Drugs & Money"), I was pleasantly suprised. Keep it up!
