'Last Fair Deal Gone Down' is the first 'real' album in the modern Katatonia sound. Almost all the elements that made BMD the masterpiece that it is have gone to be replaced with a melancholic alternative metal sound that focuses on song craft and immediate melodies. Some of Katatonia's best songs are on this album ('Teargas' and 'Chrome' come to mind) as well as a more modern production that brings out the stunning guitar melodies. Also the drumming, especially when compared to DO and TD is more complex and interesting. While this is a far cry from their earlier work Katatonia manage the transition with grace and dignity and produced an excellent album to prove it.
