I'm sure there'll be plenty of people determined to bash this album, as is always the case
with such a highly anticipated release, so I'll write a pre-emptive rebuttal to the haters.
On repeated listens, this record lacks nothing in the way of creativity, intensity,
memorability, and brutality. The songs manage to be genuinely heavy whilst still including
powerful, often melodic hooks, and the guitar work is probably some of the most solid the
band have ever done. I never thought I'd be saying this, but in my opinion this tops The
Blackening. Just as epic and heavy, but far catchier with more skilful songwriting. The best
metal album of 2011 and an instant classic.

Having lived with this for a while, I've decided, despite initially disliking it, that Unto the Locust is something of a flawed masterpiece, little things get in the way of the album attaining true brilliance, but it is nonetheless an epic and powerful work

One of the best albums of 2011 in my honest opinion and certainly Flynn and the gang's best so far, beating 'Burn My Eyes' and 'The Blackening'. The band add some progressive metal elements to their music and it's all the better for it. The title track is annoyingly catchy and along with 'I am Hell', 'Be Still and Know' and 'Who We Are' is among the best songs here.

Definitely a 'grower' album for me. Darkness within, I am hell and This is the end are the standout tracks for sure. However the closing song Who we are isn't on the same level. Credit to MH for daring something new with each album. Great band.

Unto the Locust may not be quite as aesthetically satisfying as The Blackening, as it just doesn't have the same amount of great riffs, but it easily beats its predecessor for atmosphere and maturity. More than ever, Machine Head's songwriting comes off as ambitious rather than disjointed, even if they still have a way to go until they master just exactly the sound they've been trying to achieve since Through the Ashes of Empires - and did, at times, with songs like Imperium, Halo and now This Is the End. Oh, and Robb's vocals are better than ever.

While I don't think this is a superior effort to The Blackening, it is a very solid release. Sure MH had their down period with TBR and SC, but their last three releases have been as solid as anyone's in the past 10 years. MH have never gotten their due as far as being as good a band as they are and while I don't feel this one is as strong as TB(- 1/2 point), it is still far better than 99% of what people call "metal" these days.

This album absolutely blows The Blackening out of the water. It's fast, it's catchy, and most of all, it's forward thinking. Machine Head are not afraid to experiment with their metal, and this album is no exception. My favorite track has to be either "Darkness Within" or "Be Still and Know".

Definitely gets better with more listens just like the single "Locust" did. Outstanding album that is different enough from the Blackening to stand alone. Had to bump rating up to 5 because it just grows and grows on you.

If Burn my eyes is Kill Em All and The Blackening is Ride the Lightning this is... fuck it's not quite their Master of Puppets, more like ....and Justice For All. Been playing it all weekend though and it's still really, really good.

Machine Head return with the follow up to 'The Blackening' though do not expect 'The Blackening Part II' this is a collection of songs from a band at their creative peak. They could have easily played it safe and recorded a replica of their classic records, but they didn't.. 'Unto The Locust' is a very solid release as good as 'The Blackening' but for different reasons.
