When you look at how Blink-182 have gone about their lives since 2003's self-titled, it seems like an absolute f**king miracle that their comeback record Neighborhoods isn't absolutely laughable. When the album's first two singles failed to light the type of spark you would have expected from one of pop-punk's most important bands, it seemed as though the reunion was doomed to the backest of alleys, a whisper clung to by some but passed over by the masses. Neighborhoods certainly isn't the game-changing record that nobody expected it to be, less still the venture into new textures that stunned long-time fans on blink-182, but few would have predicted it to be this strong. There are new ideas, the weird snake-charming motif from, umm, 'Snake Charmer' for instance, but nothing that would scare away even the least adventurous listeners of the band's pre-hiatus discography. All in all, Neighborhoods is a slightly less inspired version of the group's self-titled, even including the now-mandatory interlude track (which rules), but it's a superb alternative rock album that clearly comes after side-projects where its predecessor hinted rat those projects to come. It has energy, hooks and ample intrigue. Colour me pretty impressed and equally surprised.

Adam Thomas, even though Enema of The State was a great album, every album after that was
more mature and the songs were well more thought out, especially on their self-titled. They
might not have been as catchy, but the songs kept getting better and better as a whole. Adam
Knott couldn't have said it any better, "...it's a superb alternative rock album that
clearly comes after side-projects where its pre-decessor hinted rat those projects to come.
It has energy, hooks and ample intrigue. Colour me pretty impressed and equally surprised."

blink-182 surprise everyone and put out a record that not only sounds modern and fresh, but covers every musical territory the band has staked out since their debut. It would be hard to find a fan who won't love this as it's got just about everything you'd want in a blink-182 album. And that's why it kicks loads of ass.

I feel too young here, Blink being the "in" band when I was just getting into music at age 9. But it's albums like these that kept me out of liking the musical trash that plagues my generation's taste. I'd love to see punk make a comeback; it kicks the shit out of mainstream today.

Comeback albums often feel like a half assed attempt at recreating a bands glory days. Too often bands reunite only to produce watered down albums packed with filler as a last ditch attempt to remain relevant and put some money in their wallets. Blink-182, however, who have basically been a model of consistency throughout their career, have once again put out an album that even the pickiest of their fans can enjoy. With Neighborhoods, blink avoids the easy way out of just attempting to replicate the sound that made them famous and instead, they pick up right where they left off on their self titled record and continue to push their music forward into new territories. While songs like "MH 4.18.2011" and "Natives" have that familiar/vintage blink feel, songs like "Ghost on the Dancefloor" and "Snake Charmer" expand on the darker sound blink brought forward on their self titled. Neighborhoods not only exceeds expectations, it actually holds it's own against blinks past work, which is no small feat for an album that comes 8 years after it's predecessor.

It's good, largely average but good. Some songs like After Midnight are rather good, but
I'll admit myself disappointed as a fan of the band. Tom brought too much of his over
wrought grandeur in from Angels and Airwaves where it ought to stay. I'm all for growing and
pushing boundaries, but change for the sake of change is unnecessary. Lots of blinks charm
was rooted in their simplistic, catchy instrumentalism and entertaining lyricism. Their post
break-up on-stage demeanor suggests they can still be the same catchy punk band with teenage
antics, but this reunion album lacks its own proof of that. Admittedly the band has had some
dark years of late and perhaps it was only natural that the music bore the vacuous
soundscapes or search for greater meaning, but it would be nice to see the band get back to
their roots. Growing up isn't all about being mature and boring or having every aspect of
your music echo in outer space, but it's going to take some serious self restraint on Tom's
part and a more intimate recording process on the whole.

This album may not sound a whole lot like old Blink, but I love it. Neighborhoods is one of my favorite albums of 2011, and is indeed my all-time favorite Blink-182 album.
|3.5 great||cheapcrayon | December 13th 12|
If you're a Blink-182 fan and you approach this album with an open mind, you should realize that this is better than some people like to make it seem. Sure, there's stale tracks where Tom DeLonge's vocals are cringe-worthy and most of the lyrics are mediocre.. but the rest of the album does a good job of displaying the band's different styles throughout their discography. "Heart's All Gone" sounds like it could've been on Enema of the State and "After Midnight" is like an excerpt from the 2003 self-titled. Blink-182 came back after 8 years, barely sounded like they ever left, and avoided creating something that could've been awful. All things considered, this is a great album, and anyone who enjoyed their more mature sound before their break-up should have no trouble enjoying this.
|3.5 great||Pencil | September 28th 12|
A good comeback album, but nothing TOO amazing, except maybe 'After Midnight" and "Hearts All Gone"
|0.0 ||ASnideRemark | February 20th 12|
Blink-182 has lost their touch, while their instrumental technicality is still there, they seem uninspired, the lyricism is boring and the melodies are half-assed. This basically was thrown together to please fans, and unfortunately, it wasn't enough, as the album was a complete and total let down, with the only upsides being the catchy instrumentals.
|3.5 great||charlie15 | October 8th 11|
A great release minus a few tracks which I dislike entirely. This could have been awesome, it just falls a little short. Been listening to them since I was 13 so I'll always have a soft spot for their music.

I absolutely love this album! But even though Tom is my idol, I think Mark needed more time on the mic. My rfavorite songs by blink feature both of them. This was much more biased to Tom. But damn, it's still great. rThe interlude, for example, gave me chills.
|4.0 excellent||thefourthwave | September 24th 11|
While none of the songs present instant catchiness, they quickly grow with a couple of listens into favorites. This is certainly a more mature blink; but picks up where they left off.

This is what happens when all previous musical endeavours come together as one thinking mind. This is a complete mix of everything from the past. AvA's sound is present, as with Boxcar Racers's... It is a melting pot of sounds. It's average, it has some good songs. To anyone who honestly thought they'd stay the same after they split up is a fool. They've matured a lot, their not kids anymore. They're adults. If you're disappointed, well who cares, this is what you've got from the band. Take it or leave it.
