Add this to the collection of 2011 releases that fail to meet expectations. The atmospheres presented don't do anything to conjure emotion (maybe I'm just not under the influence of enough magical potions), and the music (for the most part) is unremarkable - from the solos to the lack of riffs to Masvidal's forgettable chorus lines. A sympathy 3 just because it's CYNIC.

Too many faggots butt-hurt that there isn't any death metal or robot vox. The interludes are honestly the best part of the album and have more atmosphere than anything Cynic has ever done. Title track is great and the other two are pretty decent. If they had done a whole album like this, it would give a good ass-pounding to Traced in Air.

Cynic prove that even after twenty years, a band can musically evolve and explore, all whilst retaining what made them so damn great to begin with. "Carbon Based Anatomy" is a different kind of beast than was "Focus" or "Traced in Air." In whitling away their death metal influences even further, Cynic have crafted their most atmospheric work to date. Even though the filler is actually pretty decent, it's too bad it detracts from the over all record.

A fantastic little slice of Cynic that is hopefully indicative of the quality of their next full length. Personally, I just love the style and the sound of this band, and this EP is no exception. Paul Masvidal's pristine vocals sans their typical vocoder effects sound fantastic here over the sci-fi atmospheres and the always-impressive musicianship (the bass work here is particularly fantastic). This EP also fully displays Cynic's careful attention to rich, fleshed-out textures, employing lots of ambient noise and effects to make each song feel nuanced and cosmic. The vocal diversity on here is also a huge plus with ethereal spoken word, shamanic singing, and tribal chanting. Can't wait to hear what this band has been working on for 2012.

Three out of six songs on this EP are a total waste of time. The other three are poorly structured, I'm not a big fan of the guitar tones, or the mix for that matter and it all just blends together into an unforgettable mess. Very disappointed personally.

Death-Metal and Focus this is not, but a great EP it is. The first couple songs aren't really that great, but track 4 is where this it really starts workin' for me. In the end though, this probably won't get them any new fans, just give their die-hard ones another reason for why they're so awesome. 3.8/5

Continuing to exemplify their unique blend of jazz tinged progressive death metal, Cynic have focused more on the atmospheric mellow aspect of their sound, with the majority of the effort being placed on the vocals, the guitars and the ambient sounds. The solos are well placed and well crafted and help to push the song forward. All in all this release is extremely coherent but at the same time highly experimental and it shows that Cynic is heading in the right direction.

I thought the last Cynic album saw the band in a bit of an identity clash, but if this is where they're heading I'm still expecting great things. Box Up My Bones is among their best work.

It's not that bad. I don't mind the softer stuff, but 3 filler songs and some songs that are passable at best is not up to Cynic's usual standard. Needs a little more complexity in the music, I'd argue.

It pains me to give Paul Masvidal and Cynic, a musician and a band that has given me so much joy over the years (albeit with huge hiatuses in between), a 3.0. This has nothing to do with the fact there are no Cookie Monster death vocals. I happen to like Masvidal's other projects a lot (Portal and Aeon Spoke--check them out!), and those are much less heavy than this EP. It's the fact that there is only one song out of six (the title track) that lives up to standard Cynic has set on Focus and Traced in Air, which admittedly is hard to reach, but, hey, that's their job.

The ambiance is a double-edged sword; it's very enjoyable in the short tracks under 2:30, but I also think it makes Box and Elves sound muddled.
Give the shorties (especially Hieroglyph) and the eponymous track a spin.

I've been listening to the title track since it was released, and I find it to be one of my favorite Cynic tracks thus far. So this EP had immense expectations to live up to, even outside of Focus and Traced. At any rate, I was a bit disappointed to find that 3 of the EP's 6 songs aren't songs at all, but rather atmospheric intros and interludes. The other two tracks I had not heard seemed quite solid on the first few runs, but need further digestion. All in all, quality Cynic material, but a highly disappointingly small amount of it. For now, a 4/5 for me.
