Ugh, i'm so freakin' disappointed. Everything's just so boring on this. The only songs I really like are Black Tongue, Curl of the Burll, Blasteroid, Stargasm, Octopus Has No Friends, All the Heavy Lifting, The Hunter, Dry Bone Valley, Thickening, Creature Lives, Spectrelight, Bedazzled Fingernails, The Sparrow. We'll see if my opinion changes after a few more listens but I just feel immensely disappointed right now. Fuck.r

The Hunter has a very heavy emphasis on melodic vocal hooks much more than you would expect from Mastodon. What results is a very enjoyable (and certainly catchy) album that still delivers the typical Mastodon instrumentals that you would know from Blood Mountain and Crack The Skye. If you don't like it, well, that's just the curl of the burl.

Mastodon are a band that know how to play to their strengths, and no album showcases this fact better than The Hunter. Both drastically different and instantly familiar, this is a monster of an album, filled with crushing schizophrenic riffs, psychedelia, melody, stoner-inspired songwriting flare, and some of the best vocals Mastodon have ever produced. The Hunter delivers on just about every level. This is the result of a band evolving, no more, no less.

With Mastodon's fifth album you get a a release which is longer than Crack the Skye but doesn't feel that way. The massive epic songs are gone with the longest track on this release being "only" five and a half minutes long. The experimentation of the band shows and you end up with an impressive radio-friendly release which ultimately will further propel them into becoming the metal superstars they deserve.

Decent album, but nowhere near their last few. A little inconsistent (Curl of the Burl is horrid, The Creature Lives is good for two novelty listens) but there's still some great stuff here. A few too many clean, radio-friendly choruses for my taste though, which has me worried for the future. Still, a great variety here, just not as heavy or cohesive as past work.

Look.when i first heard it i was i bit dissapointed.I mean,black tongue was awesome song,classic mastodon(if there's such a thing) with heavy epic riff and good vocals.the curl of the burl was quite different but good.Spectrelight gave me goosebumps.straight from leviathan kinda song.heavy fast and with crazy changes!!!But when it came out it quite troubled me!!!octupus,thickening,beddazled,creature lives were pretty strange songs.i love 'em now all except octupus.this song should be replaced by the ruiner!!
The production is top class but what did you expect?i mean,only metallica and slayer have failed production wise.While most of the songs have the basic song structure it is a really "headphones needed" album.Between the verses great things are happening in the music section.The keyboards have added a lot and they really lift the songs.Especially bedazzled fingernails and stargasm.Especially the latest one has a magic feeling and a similarity to seabest and sleeping giant only it's a bit faster and heavier,strange thing if you consider that the album is much mellower from blood mountain or leviathan.
The chorus section of the songs one of the strongest cards of the Hunter.They fit great for sing along at gigs(or in your rooms).All the heavy lifting in particular has a really emotional chorus.
The vocals are really worked and at times is really hard to tell who is singing what.That's gonna be a problem when these songs are being played live.
But there are 3 big questions.
WHY no1???The ruiner is among the top5 songs of the hunter along with stargasm,hunter,beddazled,spectrelight.It's heavy,epic,with big chorus.i mean why???This should be replaced with octopus which has similar structure with dry bone valley,all the heavy lifting etc.
i put it between dry bone valley and thickening in my playlist.
WHY no2???What's with the artwork.The limited edition(which i bought) has really nice artwork.the standard artwork is lame.red and the ***ing mule or whatever!
WHY no3???6 minutes making of plus 18 track by track?really?thank you!!!thanks for being soooo generous!!blood mountain and crack the skye making of were big with a lot of details and stuff.especially crack was great.now all we see is dailor talking jokes for the songs!!and six minutes?i mean...commercial clip?sad.
Well except these 3 why's the album is great and the maintain a really rare thing for today's bands.You might prefer one album over another.But while mainting the basic feel of mastodon,each song is quite different and unique.That's a rare and hard thing for a band to accomplish.Just check out how many "sequels" come out every year.

This album seriously grows on you. The first listen through I was not super impressed and I am a die hard mastodon fan. As you keep listening the songs just develop so individually in such a unique way. Mastodon changing the direction of their music has benefitted them very well. This album is truly a journey for mastodon fans. I believe that their albums can not be compared because each album has such a unique feel and setting. People that debate which album is the best is just nonsense. Looking at the albums collectively is what should define mastodon's success. This album is an incredible addition to their discography and I can only hope that what they continue to add will still amaze us.

Some pretty decent riffs and nice time changes, the vocals aren't great but they do sound original. Drumming is great, perhaps a bit excessive in some parts. I don't think this will ever be a classic, but it does sound like good, honest metal music.

It's like every band I've ever fallen in love with decided to collaborate and make a brain-exploding metal album. I hear fucking Radiohead influences adjacent to Alice In Chains song-writing. I'm almost positive Josh Homme had at least an indirect hand in making this album....Just listen to "Curl Of The Burl" and "Thickening". Probably Deftones/Tool and a countless number of bands were used as inspiration. "Octopus Has No Friends" makes me think of Blink-182 and Smash Mouth with some jam-band type riff thrown in... Yeah what the fuck. Everything just sounds so familiar yet there's so much variety, which is great, but I knocked off half a point for some lack of originality. I suppose all of the music we listen to/create has a direct connection to our influences, but it's just way more noticeable to me with this album because I love all of its influences. I'm still racking my brain for a list of bands this sounds like, at least in moments, and I'm pretty sure I'll have at least a dozen pretty soon.

Initially gave this a 4.5 rating because of Mastodon taking a new direction in their music. However after giving this album time to digest, seeing them play the songs from the Hunter live with their older stuff, and realizing that I have listened to this album the least of all Mastodon albums, I must change my rating. The Hunter, while good in it's own right, does not stack up to their older music. All of Mastodon's other albums took me at least a month to digest everything that was going in the music. The Hunter only took me a few listens to get everything. Yes making the album more simplistic is a new approach for Mastodon, but it brings down the quality of the music, making it less memorable. Save for The Hunter, Thickening, and The Sparrow, there is really nothing else special in the rest of the songs. Yes, the proggyness is still there, but there is a lot missing. Hopefully they remember how to make real metal on their next album (Look at High on Fire's latest offering) and don't continue to follow in Metallica's footsteps. One "Black Album" is forgiveable but another one is not.

When I saw the track names for this I was sure it would suck. But guess what? It doesn't. I mean it's still the same old Mastodon: the vocals suck ass, the drums are incredible, etc. etc. but god damn they've done it again. (Also this is one of the best soundoff pages of 2011 so far: Moredcai, ShadowRemains, Odal, BigHans and bloc's are all awesomely awesome).

After subsequent listens, I've decided this is a good album. I was in the mindset that it was gonna sound like one of the past Mastodon albums, and because of that mindset my judgment of the album was skewed. Judging it against an album like Leviathan or Remission, yeah it's almost completely different. But judging it as a single entity with no connection to any of Mastodon's past works, it's pretty good. In the long run I probably won't love it like I do Leviathan and Blood Mountain, but I'll still give it a good amount of plays.
