4.0 excellent | Thor | September 2nd 11 | Opeth returns in 2011 with a proggy affair. There are two kinds of records, those with and those without prog. Fortunately, Opeth recognizes the need for prog and fufills the progginess with unabashed prog. Whereas Watershed lacked prog, Heritage put the music on the prog train to progville. Proggy riffs and vocals combine with a proggy rythmn section bolstered by proggy songwriting. Overall, Heritage is an incredibly proggy event, a fantastic star studded evening of prog if you will.

4.5 superb | mandan | March 5th 13 | Heritage is possibly Opeth's biggest achievement since My Arms, Your Hearse. Extremely consistent, with nary a bad song, it's probably the most interesting album they have ever produced, even if it's not their best.

3.0 good | itchy | September 2nd 11 | I just wish Mikael could have at least made an attempt to compose smooth and musical transitions between
sections. For example, "I Feel The Dark" has a ton of abrupt and awkward lurches between vastly different
sections. This kind of writing technique is common in progressive music, and has a place in Opeth's music,
but this album contains lazy amounts of crossfade transitions between unrelated musical ideas. That said,
on a first listen there is a lot to digest and there are already some identifiably solid moments.

4.5 superb | Darkfloyd1 | September 2nd 11 | The album is everything you expect it to be, in a good way. It sounds more like the music style found in Watershed (you'll see what I mean) than Damnation but the album flows well and is best listened to back to back in one sitting. The songs do have strange interludes but overall if you like progressive music you'll enjoy this. For Opeth fans there are some faster tracks like Slither which remind you who you're listening to. The lyrics are nothing special but fit the structure well. I am really enjoying the album and look forward to hearing the songs live in the fall.

You can't expect Opeth to release the same album again, even though they've made a living out of it to an extent. Its a refreshing sound for them, and should be quite enjoyable for fans of progressive rock. It does have its faults, and at times it seems that Akerfeldt bit of more than he can chew.

4.0 excellent | mrbean667 | September 5th 11 | It's a very ambitious attempt to make pure prog music. It utilises the eclectic song structures of the '70s, chucks in influence from obscure bands and uses analog production. rIt isn't perfect. It is slightly listener-unfriendly, but I hope that Opeth continue this style in order to perfect it.

3.0 good | UpperDecker | September 4th 11 | At first I literally didn't know what to think of these songs. Now they are starting to sink in, and I'm really starting to like it. And no, I'm not just liking it because I'm an Opeth fan. When I originally heard The Devil's Orchard, I was so underwhelmed, I was expecting for the worse because it sounded nothing like anything Opeth usually does, it was just pretty boring. But like I said, after listening to it more than a few times, I'm really starting to enjoy this album, and after the first listen I didn't think that was even possible due to how different this style of Opeth is compared to all other albums. I'm giving this a rating of "good" right now. My opinion could change after even more listenings, but as of now, its a "good" to me.

2.0 poor | EXSCHISM | December 12th 23 | Going from a groundbreaking, amazing metal band, to creating very pale imitations of bands of decades past. As someone who loves Steven Wilsons material that was highly 70s influenced, I anticipated not being too dismayed by this, but it really does come across as such a weak effort. The melodicism is very weak here. The instrumentation is rather weak, claiming to be influenced by King Crimson, or referencing them in regards to this is quite comical, given they absolutely play rings around Opeth's most complex material, many fold on the majority of their records. Texturally, this record is just meek, there is quiet, and poised, and there is threadbare & weak, this is the latter. It reeks of moments where they thought they were quite genius, kids playing in the background while a thin mellotron plays, but it comes across like a band who aped a style they didn't fully grasp.

2.0 poor | GamamJ | May 29th 20 | Has its moments, and is not necessarily even a bad album, but 0 originality. This would have been a huge groundbreaking album if released in the early 70s, however with its release date being what it is... Not so much... All it is is Opeth losing their personality by basically just emulating and paying «Heritage» as the album is called to their early prog madtermind inspirations.

3.0 good | Arokan | December 24th 17 | Doesn't get close to Damnation, most songs blend together however there are few gems. Despite of the songs similarity, the album is very pleasant to listen to and I often find myself coming back to it.

3.0 good | svinariezas | January 9th 17 | At least it's not as terrible as Pale Communion and Sorceress. And the production is quite decent. Generic prog rock with some great moments.
Bump |
4.0 excellent | TheIntruder | September 14th 15 | Everything on Heritage sounds rich and full, mostly thanks to the use of analogue recording methods and other old hardware like real mellotrons and Hammond organs. The vintage musical treatment of Akerfeldt signature melodic sensibilities helps to consummate a unique world teaming with the beauty of Scandinavian folk and jazz while exuding the aura of some of the 70 darker psychedelic style. His vocal melodies are perhaps the most brilliant he has ever delivered, and has no growls. The album signals a departure from the musical style of Opeth previous studio albums. A depart from the metal sound that Opeth has been pursuit for much of their preceding musical career.

4.0 excellent | Onirium | May 4th 14 | While I do understand what could repel a few, I think this is simply a proof of the band's own
versatility; every single element of Opeth's musical atmosphere and melodic identity is present,
in the end it's merely a different interpretation. To me, this is Opeth at their absolute creative
peak
Bump |
3.0 good | Matthaios | August 22nd 13 | With Heritage, Opeth recorded a very audacious record featuring no death growls and barely any elements of a Progressive Death Metal group. This album combines classic 70's Prog with a touch of Jazz Fusion. Overall it doesn't take your breath away but perhaps in retrospect it will be looked upon more positively.
Bump |
4.0 excellent | somerandomusername | August 19th 13 | "Heritage" is a very overlooked effort in Opeth's discography. Some consider this to be their worst album, but in fact, it's experimentation and evolution at it's finest. Opeth deliver yet another brilliant record, this time in the shape of a prog/jazz fusion record.
Bump |
3.5 great | maninthebox | April 23rd 13 | Heritage sadly sees Opeth more than anything taking a slight misstep in their overall great career. On Heritage the main goal is to emulate and pay tribute to the multitude of progressive rock bands from the 70's like Camel or Gentle Giant while dropping their death metal influences entirely (I'm not gonna lie I missed them). And Opeth do indeed pay a pretty good tribute to these bands but while doing so they construct a somewhat disjointed and seemingly sporadic album. In the latter portions dynamic songs pop up that really do nothing besides being maybe providing one singular riff throughout the song and over all seem underdeveloped and not executed to their full potential. That's not saying that their aren't good songs on the album though and overall it's still an interesting if somewhat disjointed/boring listen, hopefully next album they can really tighten things up a little bit. Best songs: I feel the Dark, Slither, and Folklore.

0.0 | ihavehadaguystalkingmerecently | April 15th 13 | Boring, kind of annoying and not up to par with any music previously released by the band. This album was a true disappointment in every sense of the word.
Bump |
2.5 average | psychicpebbles | January 9th 13 | A rather awkward, transitional album from a band suffering a mid-life identity crisis. Despite featuring some of Opeth's most technical work instrumentally, Heritage falls short in terms of creativity, constantly hinting at greatness without ever quite achieving it.
Bump |
3.0 good | TRMshadow | November 6th 12 | This is by no means a terrible album; however, when compared to the monolithic image Opeth has until now been able to live up to, this is without a doubt one of the lowest points in their career. While others may cry about how "'Tis not BP!", I honestly welcome the band's evolution in a direction away from death metal. Where this album fails is that it is nothing but build-up without any conclusion (except maybe with the exception of "Famine." Opeth have proven in the past that they can provide impressive progressive without relying too entirely on their DM roots (see Damnation), but for some reason or another, with this much anticipated album the gods of metal have entirely failed to excite. 3.2/5
Bump |
4.0 excellent | OmairSh | October 3rd 12 | The album is a step in the right direction for me, however it could've been executed in a better manner. The decision for vintage instrumentation and arrangements was definitely something I was looking forward to, and there are many instances of it's brilliance shining. However I feel Mikael held back with his experimentation and as a result a lot of the time it feels like the foundations for a great album were set but not enough was constructed over those foundations.
Bump |
3.0 good | Marth | August 24th 12 | I realize this album has been out for a year or so, but I just recently picked it up. Due to all of it's mixed reviews, it was never at the top of my priority list. Opeth has always been a more daring metal band. Ever since their classic debut Orchid, they have separated themselves from what is typical in extreme metal. Heritage seems to take that mantra a little too far. Post Damnation era Opeth has been getting more and more progressive rock sounding, and Heritage is as prog rock as it gets. Opeth went as far as not having any death metal vocals on this album, which served as a great duality with their previous two releases. Heritage is not to be confused with the Damnation, which was meant to (in my opinion) be a mellow, dreamy album. I would never called Heritage a bad album though, as the musicianship contained within is top notch (as always with Opeth), and song structure very creative. I just found it a little too progressive rock sounding for my taste. If there is one thing Opeth can never be accused of though, it being a stale band. Face it, no one wants to hear Orchid or Blackwater Park over and over again, but sometimes a band can push the envelope a little too much. Fans of Mikael Akerfeldt's primary influences will surely devour this.
Bump |
3.5 great | Handyman003 | August 10th 12 | After 20-plus years of blending death metal fury with progressive ambience, Opeth decided to focus more on their roots. Their tenth album, "Heritage" eschews the death metal in favor of a more jazzy, 70's inspired progressive rock sound with clean vocals, reminiscent of some key influences: Deep Purple, Genesis, and King Crimson. The slow-burn "Heritage" completes the transition last seen on "Watershed" and represents one of the more predictable albums in their career. It's very melodic. Highlights include "Folklore", "Famine", "The Devil's Orchard" and "Slither". It may not be the five-star quality of past albums, but it's nowhere near the slouch everyone claims it is. Heritage is a decent chapter in Opeth's career.

Bump |
0.0 | Wreath | March 28th 12 | Once upon a time there was this innovative and utterly epic progressive metal band that made Blackwater Park. Then they decided to go full prog and released an album which sounds like something picked right out of the 60's. Ironic, eh? I wouldn't even mind if it didn't sound so unfocused and the almost total lack of memorable hooks is ultimately the nail in the coffin for this album. It's mostly boring to be honest and anything but progressive.

3.5 great | InFiction | October 24th 11 | People would assume that the negative reception comes from the viewpoint of hardcore Opeth fans, thinking Heritage is a betrayal of Opeth's classic sound. Damnation was different and is one of my most adored Opeth albums. The reason this is a bit of a disappointment is not because it's different, but because it's not a terribly engaging record overall. The best word to describe it would be "underwhelming" but that's not to say it's entirely bad - it has its redeeming tracks and memorable moments.

It's sounds disjointed and stitched together with Silly Putty. "Folklore" for me is the clear standout. The "God is dead" line in "Devil's Orchard" is the single worst moment in the Opeth catalogue, and drops the rating to a 2.5 for me.rFor all the talk of things new on this album, I've heard almost of all of these riffs before on previous Opeth albums. It might be hard to listen to if you are expecting another Blackwater Park, but its worth an excellent. Only criticism, myself being a guitarist, is the guitar tone. 5.0 classic | tom6 | September 3rd 11 | Beautiful album. Lush, dense, a real journey. Expect nothing - let it take you. Two warnings, though: you just won't fully grasp it at first listen (and possibly for a couple more), as the songwriting is far from conventional; and if you intend to listen to it on your iPod earbuds or some shitty sound system, don't even bother - it's like seeing The Starry Night on your computer screen.
