I've always loved Explosions In The Sky's take on post-rock. Not for them the explosive dynamic range of a Mogwai, the affected weirdness of a Sigur Ros, or the boring insistence on field recordings and 17-minute long tracks of a Godspeed. Explosions are straight-forward, clean, plain, and beautiful. Their songs swell rather than build, and blossom rather than explode. And there's something truly magical about that. "Your Hand in Mine", despite the absence of lyrics, stands as one of the most powerful love songs of this decade. The rest is just as gorgeous, if not quite as affecting (close, though). I find it hard to understand why anyone wouldn't like this.

"Your Hand In Mine" universally brings back your past and takes the fear of the future away.
It also hurts like a mother fucker if you held hands with someone you used to love when you
first heard it. It is, I think, the most poignant love song and the most heart-
wrenching break-up song, summing up every moment and emotion without even singing a word.
It's just like, Jesus.

See, this is exactly why I don't like this whole post-rock concept. Most of it assumes that the quality of a song rests purely on how loud and drum-hyper its climax is-and how slowly the song can build up to that climax. This isn't to say that post-rock can never be good, or that there have been no great albums in the history of the genre. It's just that there are too many artists who take advantage of the post-rock aesthetic to pretend that it doesn't matter how boring or simplistic their music is, as long as the amps are turned up to 11 by the time the song ends. Explosions in the Sky is one of those groups that seems to take the genre's emphasis on repetition and simplicity, and use it as a free pass to avoid the expectation that their music will have any sense of inspiration or purpose. As rudimentary as their compositional skills are, it's a miracle that the album turned out this well.

Even more emotionally affecting and breathtakingly life affirming than their other works, 'The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place' is Texan instrumentalists Explosions In The Sky's masterpiece. Their meticulously and delicately composed tracks follow roughly the same formula as their other albums, only here they are sparser, more direct and more memorable plus Your Hand In Mine may well be the prettiest love song ever written ever. Simply beautiful.

Every time I listen to this I am absolutely perplexed. It's so simple yet there's so something so inmensely deep about the construction of the songs, the dynamics, it's beyond simply beautiful, it's an entirely cathartic experience.

Oh my god. This album had me sold in the first minute of First Breath After Coma, and kept me listening until the very end. The kind of album that just changes who you are after you listen to it. I've lost track of the times I've skipped class to go to my dark corner and listen through this entire album. Whether you love it or hate it, this album is filled to the brim with emotion, and it will move you if you let it.

Sit in a quiet room and give this album your full attention. Explosions In The Sky manage to create a flawless album, oozing emotion enducing vibes that can be felt by very few bands, not to mention instrumental. Although repetitive and predictable in style the tuning, timing and layering of the guitar is what sets this apart from every single other post-rock record. Easily have listened to this album 500+ times and hands down my all time favorite album.

One word to describe this album "breathtaking". Whenever i listen to the any of the songs it puts me back in my memories. Every note flows so nicely and smoothly. There is not a single song I dislike on this album. This album has a very good variety from kind of energetic to very mellow and a bit upbeat. It's going to be very hard to replace this album. Some of my all time favorite songs is Your hand is mine and Memorial. Both different one being somewhat calm and a bit melancholy and the other more uprising.

Theres only a few albums in my life time which i would call close to close to musical perfection. Between the Buried and Me's Colors did that, Blackwater Park did that and Wish You Were here did that. Now its safe to say Explosions in the Skys epic the earth is not a dead place does it, maybe even more than any of these albums. This album is simply stunning and Beautiful, everything an album should be from these Post Rockers.

The title of the album is far from the truth-Explosions in the Sky's sound makes you think the earth truly is a cold and dark place. Drab, minimal, and wholly cold as well as paranoid, Explosions in the Sky mask a bleak atmosphere with their unique riffs and their post-rock leanings.

Beautiful CD. I think everyone post-rock fan knows of its existence and are aware of how crucial an album it is.
After all, Explosions in the Sky are pretty much the most commonly referred to post rock band-- which may be annoying for some people, but there is a reason why they are.

This album consists 5 long instrumental tracks that all show different aspects. Drumming on its own is fantastic, and the other three instruments fit perfectly in the chaotic flow. Post-rock at its very best. I like all of their albums, but this is clearly the best, having no single 'con', that can be found from the other releases. Besides the closer "Your Hand in Mine" may be the best instrumental love song ever made.

I'm not sure why I am giving this a classic rating. Post rock just hits home with me. It can just leave you breathless. It makes me feel like I observe things more clearly, and more often. It leaves me in a state of bliss, and I can appreciate everything around me. Explosions In The Sky's named must be derived from the feeling you get from your first kiss; fireworks.

One word to describe this album is "beautiful." The compositions on here flow together nicely. There are no vocals present, but the way the instruments are used and blended together more than make up for that. The instruments speak their own lyrics filled with emotion and intensity. There's some very chilled out, relaxing moments on here as well as impassioned build-ups. This is an excellent example of how post-rock should be done.
