"Potential" is an interesting word. It foresees achievement and failure simultaneously. It never means an artist is guaranteed to utilize their potential, nor does it mean they are doomed to failure. With the assumption of potential comes either satisfaction or disappointment, a prognostic at best.rWhen Owl City, young and naive, released the bubbly and respectable Of June and Maybe I'm Dreaming, I had hopes that he could somehow make his gooey lyrics and dreamy aesthetic work, maybe coming to the realization that instrumentation should be more prominent than vocals, or that "sweet", "delicate" and "effeminate" had an extremely fine line. Ocean Eyes was a slump, going in the direction I had hoped he didn't head for, trying too hard in terms of ambition. It's sad to say All Things Bright and Beautiful is even worse, though it's just how it is. "Potential" was a flickering flame come his 2009 breakthrough, but now it's snuffed out completely. Benefit of the doubt? High expectations? Maybe so. I'm sure it's not that hard to write less ridiculous songs that don't aim for simplistic daydreamy appeal ("Alligator Sky"? "All Things Bright and Beautiful"? Come on) or erect themselves as the "cake and icecream" of electronic music though. Even still, it's my fault, not his.

Adam Young is really a kid at heart looking at the bright side of life, and a lot of the criticism aims at his non-sensical, bubble pop lyrics and beats that make you think it's all cute, but nothing else. The critics are also right and wrong on this. I don't fault Owl City for making something light and fluffy for the audience, it's a good product and it sells well. But what's lacking is substance and meaning.

It was hard to give this a 2.5/5. Not because I think the album's amazing, but because the few songs on there that I really enjoy truly *are* amazing.r"All Things Bright and Beautiful" was step 1.5 of Owl City's departure from dreamy synthpop. 'The Real World' entices you into thinking otherwise, with beautiful abstract poetry about living in your imagination, but right after that 'Deer in the Headlights' hits you with a much more commercial approach to music. After that the album switches between rock, alternative rock, folk, dance, rap(???), and even ballads.rSadly, most of this album is very skippable. However, there are some real gems on here. 'The Real World' is gorgeous if you know what it's like to get lost in your imagination; Plant Life is mostly just Young and his piano, strewing about metaphors for being in a hopeless place and getting out; How I Became the Sea is pure abstract lyricism combined with beautiful production (plus an Ocean Eyes reference); and Shy Violet is...something else, but very enchanting.rMy recommendation would be to just listen to those songs. If you like them all, maybe check this album out. Otherwise...you could probably leave this one alone.

I think I'm the only one on here who genuinely enjoys Owl City. Oh well, I'm okay with that.

I really don't know why I even attempt to listen to these types of albums... I mean, I try to give them the benefit of the doubt, but they prove me wrong every time. It's almost saddening.

I actually kind of enjoyed Maybe I'm Dreaming and Ocean Eyes, they were catchy and fun (though lyrical abominations, especially Ocean Eyes). This however has no redeemable qualities. The only decent song on this is "Honey and the Bee".

More positivism from Owl City! This time; God joins the fun. A perfect collection of songs
for the young but anyone over the age of 13 should not like this. With wobbly, sappy, jelly-
like goo dribbling from the womb of the record's squeaky clean production; All Things Bright
and Beautiful is a bubble full of teeth rotting jelly-floss-sugar-cane...gummy bears.
