I always feel a little unjustified in slapping a 'classic' label on an album I just
listened to, but then it's as I say: "If you love it, so be it." Not having heard any of
CunninLynguists' albums prior to Oneirology, I can't comment on how well this stands
up to the trio's other efforts, what I can say, however, is that this is a work of art
conceptually, musically, and lyrically. The album is loosely based around the surrealistic
nature of dreams and the power of our subconscious (a theme that I've become obsessed with
recently). The music captures this perfectly, pushing the boundaries of contemporary hip-
hop with its dream-like aesthetic and clouded atmosphere. Certain sections border on
musical surrealism, such as the quirky left-field outro to 'Darkness,' while others work as
multifaceted infectious pop tracks ('Dreams'). In short, Oneirology is a gorgeous
hip-hop album that plays the gamut of emotion and works as an easily accessible masterpiece
whose songs should appeal to almost anyone who hears them.
It wasn't heaven that I was seeking but a haven I sought; a canvas of the mind painted
with my thoughts

I keep trying to see what everyone else sees in this, but can't. Sure, Kno's beats are probably his best since Dirty Acres, but he doesn't really do anything that hasn't been done in the past 10 years. That said, this is a solid record; every track is indeed listenable. If you like this, try out A Piece of Strange... far and away their best.

For those of you who weren't already aware, oneirology is the study of dreams, and this album is just that. Hazy, hypnotic, and haunting, CunninLynguists' recent is both a sonic and lyrical exploration of the dreamiest sorts and lusher, better-produced expansion on Kno's Death Is Silent. A full immersion in this record is almost guaranteed to induce a euphoric state of somnolence. "Enemies With Benefits" feat. Tonedeff might shape up to be the track of the year.

Predictably, this is amazing. They have always had an astounding atmospheric context to their songs, and from first listen, this seems to be a concept album about sleep/dreams, and the atmosphere perfectly mirrors that concept. Dreams might be the fucking song of the year. It isn't quite "A Piece of Strange," at least not yet, but I'll probably end up 5'ing this shit.

Their second best after the masterpiece A Piece of Strange. The beats are top-notch and display a lush atmosphere, the rapping is ok but is nevertheless sublimed by the feats and samples, and the lyrics are pure poetry: a classic Cunninlynguists record. Comparing this to their aforementioned magnum opus, it's a record that takes its time to reveal itself. The beats are crunchy and are the most immediate feature of the whole record. However, it's after further listening that these harmonies, pianos, bass, guitars, and raps start working together and shine. And what's most impressive is that this record is working extremely well, yet in a totally different manner than APoS, and that shows how versatile this band is, and overall how important they are for underground hip hop. They'll remain under-hyped and will never make it big, but that may be for the best.

Not being a tremendous fan of the Rap/Hip Hop genre, I can say with certainty that this is one of Rap's best albums. Not only does it have a plethora of catchy hooks and great beats, but the entire album has a flow that is so often missing in the Rap genre. Amazing album!
