A seriously interesting album. This is one of those severely odd albums, quite like "In the Court...", that is either a classic above all other classics, or a series of WTFs. As for I, it is still growing but could easily fall into the previous classification. Thanks for the Zappa Recs Ire. 4.1/5 (for now)

Its like listening to someone trying too hard to be interesting and out there but without the genius. Its hard to pinpoint but it has no genius, sometimes you start enjoying where its going and its like they run out of ideas and just stick something there because they lost the thread, a bit like bad Jazz. I see what they're trying to do here but its frustrating because the spark is not there. That moment that lifts it to the realm of the Gods, that spark of 'Electricity'. I gave it 2.5 because I can't knock them as musicians I just don't see the point. Velvet, the Captain, Love they all had genius, this is just some guys in a room trying to impress each other with how kooky they are.

I think I listened to this album as I was doing other things, but this didn't detract from giving it any attention... The first side of the album (or two I suppose) felt like your traditional rock you would hear from the mid-sixties, so it was good but nothing too spectacular - not that that's a bad thing. The main reason I give this a 4 is because of the final few tracks, from Help I'm a Rock onwards - these songs were pretty fascinating and unusual, especially for 1966. TROTSOMM is like a premonition to Revolution 9, an acquired taste but I can't stop listening to it.
