Takes a few listens to get into, but you can tell this a really focused album. Combines the slow, doomish style of Gateways with the speed and intensity of Altars seamlessly. But even if you're not into Morbid Angel's new style, at least give it a listen to just for Pete. He freakin' explodes on this album.
Though they proved one album prior that they were capable of making an excellent album almost solely on the merits of fantastic guitar tone the buzzing, droning sound here just doesn't work. It's a shame, because there are some excellent riffs splattered throughout and you get the feeling you see what they were going for here - a less ballsy, less miasmic but similarly dense approach as on Gateways - but it never comes together.
