Some good moments like "God of Emptiness" but at this point Morbid Angel wasn't the most interesting death metal band around.

Does anyone out there like death metal and powerful vocals? Yeah, that's what I thought. I know you all do. You basically need 'Covenant' in all forms. These guys have been consistent as an arrow over the last few decades, and have yet to release a bad album. 'Covenant' is a classical effort.
There's a lot on this album, musically. The ear pounding riffs and bone crushing drums are a good combination here, and so are the powerful vocals, explained before. And lets not forget the vocals, which are so powerful. Yes, reader, they ARE gutteral, somewhat of a low key vocals layout, but they are powerful as all get out, and retain a pivotal force. And this album also contains some technical yet catchy solos which are talentful and skillful, each in its own manner. The production here is incredible, especially for the time period as well.
This is a classic death metal record to own, and in all honesty, it won't disappoint.

Death metal has gone into weird brutal territories after this album, but not one of them is as well-written. Even the cover art is ominous.

Morbid Angel at their peak imo, this is a solid slab of OSDM with large amounts of technical riffing, some tie-signature changes and dissonance. Overall a really solid record, although tracks like Angel of Disease especially, but also the chanting in God of Emtiness and Nar Matturu just seem entirely unnecessary and would have probably been better to be left out.

Within the fertile soil of Florida’s early 90’s Death Metal scene was an eclectic cast of characters all chasing different darkened spaces, creating underground sounds massive and varied enough to fill graveyards full of coffins. Caught somewhere between the gore drenched plod of Obituary and the progressive mind bend of Athiest was the twisted amoral shred of MORBID ANGEL! The production credits here include a certain Flemming Rasmussen, which, given his pedigree would indicate a possible lane change into the mainstream. But Covenant is most often a spastic upside down sermon with vocalist David Vincent going Vincent Price on anyone thinking they were hearing the next Metallica; Vocals dripping with Satanic venom and a clear disdain for organized religion barking egregiously over ridiculous velocity spawned compositions that somehow never quite jump the rails and crash and burn.
“Rapture” and “Pain Divine” grind like adrenaline laced seizures…blast beats firing like infantryman on the front lines handling their first high-powered weaponry. Trey Azagroth’s solos ape Eddie Van Halen’s intent but are fueled by Greg Ginn’s anarchy! One of the genres guitar gods for good reason, but his strength is undoubtedly his unflinching stubbornness; nothing here meant to be pleasing to the ear…just insanity on 6-strings. “World Of *** (The Promised Land)” grinds things to a Brontosaurus pace before transitioning in to complete chaos; guitar leads bleeding in to the blur. Most of the rest is mid-tempo axe slop with double bass floor stomps, only occasionally making sense in unison. “Angel Of Disease” rips out entrails as a bizarre highlight. “God of Emptiness” was once featured on Beavis & butt-head where Butt-Head wonders if Vincent is actually a bear. Jury’s still out.

Morbid Angel once again reinvent the wheel, and with third album Covenant, they find a comfortable position on high speed riffs with dynamic time signatures and tempos. David's vocals are even deeper and more gut-wrenching before, the lyrical content is as apparent as the notable album cover, and this may be the greatest recorded showcase to Peter Sandoval's drumming chops ever recorded. His blast beats are not only more intelligently crafted, but they often drive the songs on their own, and the production makes his kit feel very powerful. Faster and darker than its predecessors, Covenant is a landmark for the genre and one of the best extreme metal albums ever made, kicking thrash metal square in the teeth and hitting the final nail in the coffin for said genre.

With Covenant, Morbid Angel did what few bands have successfully done--go back to their roots. Covenant has tight, thrashy riffs like Altars of Madness and it's presented with their superior songwriting skills acquired from Blessed are the Sick. Improvement in production also adds to a much darker atmosphere and Sandoval's drums sound crisp.

Suffers only from a slight repetitiveness and, if this is fair, lack of overabundance. At the same time, it's much more controlled than the first two and, at its best, exceeds them based on strength of will. It also happens to be one of the last of death metal albums that retains that scratchy, almost primitive goodness. It's probably overrated by its lovers but probably also underrated by its critics, but either way its definitive Morbid Angel.

Morbid Angel follow through on the direction Blessed... hinted at by focusing almost exclusively on the churning low-end of Trey's off-kilter slide-abusing riffing. A couple less inspired tunes (Blood on My Hands, the ambient track), but sick nonetheless.
