For better or worse, Morbid Angel never made the same album twice, showing the world how they were one of the true innovators of extreme metal as their style took music to unorthodox speeds and time signatures and broke through boundaries. Altars of Madness was a foreshadow for the demise of thrash metal, and Blessed Are The Sick shoehorned a gaping hole for more extreme metal to grow. That may be because it strips down its thrash roots in favor of downtuning, more prominent blast beats, grittier growls, and variation of time signatures. The bottomheavy production and further emphasis on "death" makes Blessed Are The Sick an early yet well aged representation of extreme metal that came after it, and it remains a stone cold classic to this day, holding onto the strengths of their classic debut while paving the way for more standards of the genre. This is where Death Metal truly became its own and overthrew the previous underground go-to genre Thrash Metal.

Leaving behind the overwhelming thrashiness in Altars of Madness, Blessed Are the Sick brings forth an onslaught of mammoth riffs blended with some atmospheric pieces. All in all, an impressive record for these death metal legends.

At times excessive in the highest degree, at others, especially the interludes, charmingly restrained, almost quaint. This is where Morbid Angel first showed their ability to blend moderate pace and songwriting panache with torrid death metal and as a result this album is a good deal more developed than the debut. It still retains that albums spastic nature, though, for the better and the worse.

Despite Paradise Lost, Anathema, and My Dying Bride, this album may be the first that combined death metal and doom metal. You can't see anything of that nature coming from Morbid Angel, but the slow tempos, the heaviest riffs in Morbid Angel's 1990s career, and the slow deep growls, make it very easy to mistake Morbid Angel for the likes of death/doom. Regardless of genre confusion, it's still great.

Ehhhh, as a non-fan of death metal this is just alright for me. Altars of Madness was a moody, atmospheric masterpiece; while this is just feels like your typical 90's DM album. Not to say it's bad, it just isn't for me.

Morbid Angel cement their place as eternal Death Metal royalty. After the genre-defining debut, though still quite thrashy, Morbid Angel release an album that inproves on every aspect of the last one. Athe Death Metal sound is much more relised and varied between thrash infused blistering speed and gut-churning slower parts. Additionally Trey ventures to his outside influences adding eerie acoustic, piano etc. interludes to set an unmatched sense of atmosphere and cement this album as Morbid Angel?s overlooked masterpiece.

My favorite of Morbid Angels first three albums. This is where they began using their signature sludgy guitar tone. It was more up my alley as a brutal death metal fan, as opposed to the more fast-paced "Altars of madness".

Not a fair comparison since I jammed them weeks and weeks apart, but did not impress me nearly as much as Altars did. Sounds gimmickier and more outdated. The middle of the album has some good old school death metal tracks, but the first few and last few tracks especially are kinda meh and really wankery at times. The notable exceptions are the two instrumentals, with 'Desolate Ways' being my fav track of the album. 3.0r

Unfortunately a great drop in quality from the debut. But that doesn't mean this is bad by any means; Blessed Are the Sick is mostly just different, with not quite the same approach as Altars of Madness. Will probably raise my grading with more listens.

A 4 at its very best, Blessed Are the Sick is praised by many bands from Nile to Suffocation, but it really lacks what made Altars of Madness so special. Yes, it is creepy and at times fun to listen to; other times it sounds boring and like the instruments are just creating a background to last beyond the 1-2 minute punk boundary line. In all honesty, this is a 3.7-3.8.

This is the first Morbid Angel record i ever listened to so it has a special nastalgic factor to it haha but serisousll this is a really cool album. It has alot of diversity in the tracks, some are really heavy and have almost a groovey feel to them, while others focus on sheer speed. ITs still pretty early in their career so the songs are relativly primative but thats not always bad. Its just really solid

'Blessed Are the Sick', is considered one of the best death metal albums ever released in the grunge-era and sounds as good as their 1989 debut release 'Altars of Madness'. This album is also a classic Morbid Angel album with a few smoking tracks such as "Blessed Are the Sick/Leading the Rats", "Desolate Ways" and others that will blow your minds out! A friend of mine got me interested in this band and I enjoyed them very much. There are a lot of metal guitar solos on this album, which you thought is good in any way. If you are a Morbid Angel fan, get this album, also if you like 'Altars of Madness'.
