Okay so the whole time I'm listening to this, I'm imagining Sharon Stone (circa Sliver) walking up to me real slow like, in this awesome black leotard, real skimpy like, and they're these candles (red), burning, and rose petals too. We're in a hotel room, by the way. So like, I'm sitting on a chair and she comes up to me, climbs on top and wraps those long, 80s sex goddess legs are around me, and shes sorta dry humping me, real passionate like, and then I reach down and start to unzip the leotard from behind, and she stops me, looks me in the eye real seductive like, and starts to like make out with my neck and oh my god I jizzed my pants.

Impressive even after just a single listen, Kaputt has the potential to grow into something truly special. I'm not sure just how good this is going to end up being for me, but it gave me the same feeling that albums like Grandfather and Trading Twilight for Daylight did upon an initial listen. Something tells me this is going to be the kind of album I look back on five or ten years from now and it defines every event that occurred in my life right now, along with the emotions carried by those moments.

This is just one of those albums that makes you lose your breath from its splendor - Bay of Pigs especially causes stupidly fanboyish reactions to well up inside of me - but it's all worth it.

What I love about this album basically comes down to texture and atmosphere. Basically, it sounds absolutely gorgeous. The airy synths, warm bass, crystalline acoustic guitars, and relaxed vocals give this album such a cool, silky-smooth vibe that I just can't help but be swallowed by. Every track on here just oozes this atmosphere, albeit without much variation but I enjoy the sound so much that this is hardly a problem for me. The other thing that really pushes this album to the next level is the lyrics. They have a very cynical, sarcastic wit to them and focus on the dark, hypocritical side of America among other things. This seems to be very at-odds with the soothing sound of the music, which is what makes everything resonate so much more. It's like the music itself is just a further sarcasm, purposefully syrupy and tame to make the lyrics even more snide and insincere. Whether I'm analyzing the album on this deeper level or simply soaking up the sound of the music, I always end the album with the urge to start it again.

Unlike most albums with that god-awful 80s pop influence, this indie-pop album is extremely powerful and relevant-sounding. With a hodgepodge of influences and some variance in style, this is definitely an indie-pop album that's unforgettable.

Destroyer may not have created a classic album with "Kaputt" but they have created an album of musical and cultural improtance. The lyrics on here are so heartfelt, depressing, and beautiful and seem to perfectly define the struggling condition of Americans and humans in general. The lyrics and their meaning make the album seem more like a great novel and make Bejar sound like a poet who is a hit song away from being the voice of a generation. All of these things combined with gorgeous and original instrumentation, "Kaputt" is on track to be a classic album and one of the best albums of 2011. And if it is not both of those things it is at least damn important.

This had the potential to be an amazing album. Unfortunately it ends up sounding too samey. The production is great, but it still could have used some more variety. Sure the songs don't all sound exactly the same, but at some point they all end up in the same place: a murky, airy undertone with a guitar on top of it followed by saxes. By the 4th song, I was yearning to hear a song with a different formula: something with a moment of clarity, or an explosion of sound, or even an a capella despite how crappy the singer is. There needs to be a switch-up at some point. And I'm not sure if this is actually true or not, but because of the repetitive formula, it sounded to me like the sax was playing the same notes on every song.
