Metal Church's debut is not exactly a "pure thrash" release. It kind of straddles the line between heavy metal and thrash metal, but I digress, it doesn't really matter. This album is fantastic and completely underrated. David Wayne's vocal performance here is one of the finest in the genre, he's got a wide range and he uses it to his advantage quite well. Vanderhoof and Wells don't really mix it up too well with the riffs, but they certainly make up for it with bad ass solos. The title track here "Metal Church" is a thrash anthem, and the song "Hitman" is one of my all time favorites.

Since I first heard this band way back in '84 when I bought it on cassette tape and listened to the whole first side (Beyond the Black, Metal Church, Merciless Onslaught and Gods of Wrath) the drumming is still absolutely phenomenal. I still listen to those same songs to this very day. As a matter of fact I just listened to Beyond the Black not an hour or so earlier.

From the very beginning, Metal Church walk a tightrope in which they stumble into different styles of metal without ever losing their footing (well, a couple times throughout their extensive history) and bearing no true definition to their sound. Heaps of thrash, a stack of power metal, healthy doses of traditional metal and hard rock grooves, and everything in between, all of which tastefully incorporated into their sound. While their eponymous debut shares more in common with thrash and NWOBHM than most of their material afterward, they round out their diverse formula into a classic thrash record with the menacing build up of "Beyond The Black" to the frantic riffing of "Battalions." The title track features one of their most distinctive riffs ever while the likes of "Hitman" and "(My Favorite) Nightmare" have a fun, sarcastic vibe to their hooks and pacing. Metal Church's first masterpiece luckily isn't their only one as this proved to be an early pinnacle to an ambitious, musically accomplished career.

Right from the opening distorted vocals on "Beyond the Black," one can tell that this album is going to be brilliant. And it is; while it is not a perfect album, it is still a classic and a mandatory listen for ANY metalhead.

One of the classiest thrash metal albums ever released. Even if these guys were still searching for their identity "Metal Church" remains a very decent work. "Beyond the Black", "Metal Church", "Merciless Onslaught" and "Battalions" are the best songs here.
