I can't figure out what to do with myself listening to this. Do I put on my serious art critique face and listen with a technical ear? No, because then he hits me with autotune and clumsy lyrics. Do I just chill out and relax to the music like a regular dubstep album? No, because then he laces all those little parts in in a syncopated way that make it impossible for me to catch a vibe. Shit is too unstable. It's a cool album, and it's very entertaining, but it still feels listless and empty and hard to listen to as a whole.

James Blake's music isn't made up of sound, but rather of silence. It's the London producer's deft handling of negative space that makes his debut album so compelling and beautiful. The harmonies are lush but never suffocatingly so, and the melodies have an uncanny way of burrowing their way into your head and refusing to leave. Sublime.

The evidence has always been there that James Blake's been building up to something big, something left field and infuriatingly cerebral. Yeah, we all knew it was coming, but hearing this warped and futuristic but fed through a blender r&b and garage hybrid is still a shock to the system. Running through this "voices in the walls" mystique and non-hooks it's hard to truly place where this album belongs. Think Bon Iver scratching a soul itch and you're off to a good start

Sorry guys I just don't see what the big deal is. Maybe i need more bleep bloop bleep music in my diet but this just doesn't sit that well with me. I mean it's ok, at times pretty decent, but I like Klavierwerke infinitely more.

I can never really decide whether I like this album or not. Some days it feel awkward and bare, and others it feels hypnotizing and intimate. But whether I'm digging it or skipping tracks, I always find myself thinking that this album has gotten a bit more praise than it really deserves. Mr.Blake still has a lot of room to grow.

My favorite album of 2011, although the year's not over, I've known this since it came out. It simply rings with me in a way no other album has from this year, or ever. It is progressive without losing the intention, in other words, retaining the emotion. Outstanding

James Blake boasts about his ability to "combinine logic and emotion in a meaningful way" (quote: James Blake, Roskilde Festival 2011) but his cover of Feist's brilliant "Limit to Your Love" is not nearly as emotional as the original, nor does his excessive use of open spaces in his music seem logical in any way; his music is chopped up but rarely groovy and it is naked but not really clear-sighted; so it's really not that meaningful either.

This is a rather enjoyable debut, but Blakes' voice doesn't have the emotional impact of a Justin Vernon or Nebraska-era Springsteen (my 2 favorite singer-songwriters) and the beats miss the warmth of the compositions of a Four Tet. In fact, the album comes off as rather cold and emotionless and it's this that keeps me from really embracing it.
