| 4.5 superb | Adam Turner-Heffer | May 22nd 07 | The birth of post-rock.
Of course, in 1991 (and for quite some time) the term post-rock had never been coined as a genre of music, but this bleak, yet atmospheric incredible piece of work to me seems like the obvious link between post-punk (or grunge for better terms) and post-rock. Before this album, anything longer than 5 minutes or remotely challenging was just considered "prog" and neatly shoved into the dustbin where prog fans do cohabit. This, took that idea of creating "big" pieces of music from a more arty and even punk way (even if punk is not an obvious influence for this, generally very sparse sounding record) and did something with it essentially unheard of since the velvet underground first took on the challenge. Here we have 6 disconjointed, angular, dischordant songs, that some how manage to be very touching. 'Washer' remains one of the most beautiful songs ever commited to record where as the kicking and screaming end to 'Good Morning, Captain' will put you on edge for some time after listening.

| 4.0 excellent | Matthew Dreany | September 10th 06 | One of the greatest ep's of all time, "Spiderland" defines their sound with nice little stories from Brian McMahan, excellent guitar work, and consistant drumming throughout. Though many people say "For Dinner" ruins the album, it's actually not bad, just a little boring at first, but it's a grower. The only imaginable knocks are length, and the fact that the guitar sounds similar in some songs, which is true, but that's okay when the guitarwork is excellent.

| 5.0 classic | Otis Redding | May 25th 11 | 1:34 PM: i just started listening to this album. im almost through breadcrumb trail so far it's pretty good. 1:36: i sense a light hint of grunge influence (1min into nosferatu man). 1:56: 30 seconds from the end of Washer... this album is amazing so far. 2:02 Good Morning Captain...my mind = Blown. 2:10... the album just ended...that was amazing. this album is the best postrock ive ever heard.

| 5.0 classic | LordGreekFolder | March 27th 08 | This is the sort of record to which I've never caught myself saying "No, I don't think I'm in the mood for that right now". Having been born a couple years before this album, and only discovering it a few years ago, it's difficult for me to really understand this album in terms of sheer progression, innovation, and genre-creation. (Though I do recognize that it exceeds in those three areas).
For me, it's the sound itself that is so captivating. This is an album commonly considered to be exemplary of "Math-Rock" and yet you find natural, pulsating, and rhythmic songs, as opposed to the abrasiveness and conscious-unpredictability that typically either makes or breaks other albums of the genre. And the lyrics are surreal and terrifying, "...like swimming underwater in the darkness, like walking through an empty house, speaking to an imaginary audience, being watched from outside by no one".
Lastly, the ending of the album, the climax of 'Good Morning, Captain', is among the most stirring and passionate sounds I've ever heard. Genuine angst, true raw emotion, something most bands strive for but often fall short.

| 5.0 classic | Garage Pail | June 5th 12 | This was a 2 one year ago. I tried a few times here and there, but it never grabbed my attention. Could not fucking understand the appeal. Now, I think this album is a work of genius and Washer is probably the best song I have ever heard. it feels good to know that surely even now i'm too dumb to appreciate certain albums i've already heard repeatedly and think I understand, and appreciate them to this magnitude.

| 3.5 great | MarvinLapsus | March 16th 12 | Great sound, but it gets boring and it's not so thematically original. Anyway, you can observe the influence of King Crimson and Sonic Youth, and that means that they know what they're doing.

| 5.0 classic | Spagett | August 10th 11 | Spiderland has to be one of the most creepiest albums I own, but that being said, it's also probably my favorite of all time. I don't know what it is but something about this album hits me right in the core. Listening to it while sleeping will deprive you of rest..but it's a great experience. I always find myself waking up at Don Aman, specifically where he says Don stepped outside. Such a genius album. I feel bad for you if you can't get into this one.

| 2.5 average | TigerWoods | June 26th 10 | As an experienced runner, I am always on the lookout for albums that will help inspire me during a race. I picked up a copy of this album after a recommendation from my friend Shaun. Often touted as a “classic”, Slint’s Spiderland is an album that, sadly, does not live up to the hyberbole. I approached this album expecting a masterpiece, a tour-de-force. I was left sorely disappointed, as instead I was left with a rather limp collection of songs. The vocals are desperately weak, in fact, they consist only of mumbling while the guitarist plays uninspired, noodly guitar lines in the background. Standouts include “Don, Aman”, if only for its title and some good lyrics. The conclusion of “Good Morning Captain” is further reason to condemn this bands choice of vocalist, as his weak screams of “miss you” fail to impress.
So why is this album so beloved? After doing some research, I’m still not sure, and the thought-processes of hipsters is not something that interest me, so I will probably never know. Suffice to say, this album is not worth listening to, and after listening to it I was glad to return it to Shaun.
Subtract that ‘s’ from Slint’s name and you’re left with “lint”, the fluffy material sometimes found in our bellybuttons. It’s a good description of this bands music. Fluffy yet inconsequential and certainly not something you would want in your CD player.

| 2.5 average | Motiv3 | March 14th 10 | Slint without a doubt are pioneers and are important in their own right for helping spawn the genre that is post rock. However whilst i respect that, i do not get what is so special about this album. Whilst this album does share notable characteristics with modern post rock, whatever promising moments there are in this album are washed away by a sea of mediocrity, overdrawn and boring repetitiveness not to mention a horribly annoying voice. The fact that this helped spawn some of the best post rock bands around is the only reason why this album holds any resemblence in my opinion. A foothold in post rock this is, a great album this is not.
