Embryonic Anomaly serves as an acceptable debut album from a deathcore band who relies too much on some kind of space gimmick, hence the coined term 'aliencore'. While the production is quite abysmal at times and the lyricism is stupid, Rings of Saturn use their technicality and other advanced items to create a record which goes rather fast.
I can understand people being turned off by their "alien" gimmick, but to me this album
fucking rocks the more I listen to it. As I said, it's kind of gimmicky but to a point
that's acceptable (for me at least). Some of these tracks really melt my brains out. The
first track, "Seized And Devoured" is insane, aggressive riffing combined with funky guitar
melodies soaring over the recording, it immediately sets the mood for a weird technical
Death Metal/Deathcore trip
Upon first listen "Embryonic Anomaly" may sound like another sterile technical jam session, but if we dig a little deeper into Rings of Saturn's 8-bit aliencore layers, we find an interesting blend of creativity and technique. Great to see young musicians exploring new territories.
The production of the album is atrocious to the point where my ears begin to hurt shortly into a song. The beyond obnoxious guitar wankery doesn't appease the pain, nor does the terrible deathcore elements thrown in. Absolutely appalling-- this is everything wrong with technical death metal.
