Power, Corruption & Lies is the true birth of the New Order that influenced and enraptured many throughout the eighties and still holds dominion today - in fact it's rather astonishing how fresh, relevant and utterly satisfying this three decades old music still is. New Order named their debut album 'Movement', as if to announce to the world that they had moved on from the past, but if that album didn't really satisfy in that respect, than this second attempt undoubtedly did. Power, Corruption & Lies is simply New Order grasping their identity and modelling it to the ears of listeners in a glorious, confident and compelling pose - provocative, cool, sophisticated and unreservedly refreshing, its eight tracks are nothing less than essential to fans of groundbreaking music, in general.

I know this is regarded a classic, however I find everything in between opener and closer rather underwhelming, especially songwriting-wise.

The first track is everything, a beautiful post-punkey jams with excellent synthwork, and the main problem with the album is that I wanted more of that, but it never really comes. For good or bad I had to listen to the 2015 remaster of the album. At least it has the same amazing artwork. 2 slows things down a lot already and feels like a structural mistake, as 3 picks up the pace again. The sound is now resolutely electronic, synthpop, whatever you call it, away from the Joy Division heritage. And I find these tracks to sound more dated. It does work on 3 though it's a touch too long maybe, then 4 slows down again and sounds exaggeratedly outdated now. It remains fun, and must have been so fun at the time, and tbf after 5 minutes when the sound opens up the track really becomes good and shows things that are quite ahead of their time. So an interesting track at the very least. The second half of the album is better structured. 5 is cool instrumentally but the vox bore me a bit, then 6-8 transition really well into each other. 6 is again a track that only gets really cool in its second half, 7 is an ok fun track that is not as long so doesn't have time to wear off which is good, and 8 does bring back a bit of the post-punkish melancholy of 1, which imo works better with their sound (and my taste I confess) and bumps the album a point in the home run to a flimsy 3.7

Born from Joy Division's ashes, New Order operates in much more dancey and upbeat territories. Their brand of new wave is still cold at its core - the post-punk guitar sound living its last mainstream moments - but it exhibits itself in almost funky tones led by the aerodynamic bass (rofl that doesn't mean anything) and atmospheric synths. There are some slight industrial influences (the drums' sound for instance) which never take the spotlight, but work very well with the overall aesthetic. The dancey tunes are however the realest deal here, "Age of Consent" or "The Village" making you tap yo foot real hard, while the more drowsy tracks tend to meander for too long. I would have loved to jam this in '83 in Manchester. Where's "Blue Monday" though?

I really wanted to enjoy this album, but it failed to achieve the same level of enjoyment as Joy Division. Without Ian Curtis, the band is completely different. While many people enjoy this album, an Ian Cuties-less Joy Division does not do it for me.
